'FEEL FINE FOR MY AGE' SAY WILLMAR WOMAN, NEARLY 100
"Mrs. L. E. (Irena) Coss was the guest of honor at a summer reception in recognition of her nearly
100 years of like recently. Mrs. Coss will not actually celebrate her 100th birthday until February 7, but
was honored now so that friends and relatives would be able to attend.
"Her first response when interviewed was given with a big grin, "I feel fine for my age." She had
only that morning hung clothes on the line outside and she baked a cake the night before. As her
daughter, Dortha Joyner of Pasadens, Calif., added, "You have to keep an eye on her. It's hard to stay
ahead of her."
"Irena is a very vital and independent woman. She still lives alone and does her cleaning, cooking
and laundry even though she does have help and ompany from her son, Vernon Coss of Willmar, and his
family.
"She also has definite opinions and is willing to give them if asked. She attributes her long life to
vitamins and the right vegetables. She added that the vegetables are homegrown and frozen, not canned.
"Her advice to the world is to live each day as it comes, be good and follow the Ten Commandments.
To those reising children, she says parents should make sure that their children carry out what is told to
them and a parent should only need to speak once or twice.
"She doesn't really believe in spanking, but says if twice didn't do it for her children, they did get
spanked. With a twinkel in her eye, she added that she never got spanked, and that she never got into any
mischief.
"She difinitely doesn't believe in divorce and says there sould be no need for it if both people would
try and be willing to give and take and meet each other half way. As she recalls her married life, she
stated her philosophy of marriage as 'I tried to please him and he tried to please me. We talked things
over until there were no angry feelings.' "
"Looking back on her years in Willmar, she had very definite feelings about the changes that have
taken place. She came to Willmar with her husband, the late Dr. L.E. Coss, a lont-time chiropractor in
Willmar, around 1913. They first lived in a two- story house here that they rented for $7 per month.
"They inhabited the three rooms downstairs and rented the three rooms upstairs for $4 per month"
(Gladys says this was in Luverne), "she added with a chuckle. They then moved to room above the
drugstore. She very clearly remembers the move to the house where she now resides. 'It was a slough out
here,' she said as she pointed out the window to her back yard." (Gladys says this was 10th Street West.)
(Also from Gradys - When Irena and Eddie moved to 5 th street, Eddie bought the house without her
knowledge. It was NOT the house she wanted.)
"Asked about the changes here, she shook her head and said, 'it's not Willmar any more.' She can
remember when one could go from one end of Litchfield Ave. to the other without stopping.
"In her opinion a lot of the improvements have 'just not beautified the city at all.' All the churches
are new and different and the by-pass only causes one to get lost.
"Mrs. Coss spends her time doing her housework, watching the birds in the birdbath in the back yard,
reading and napping. She says she just doesn't care much for TV and finds it silly.
"In fact, some of the ways women act of TV make her ashamed of being a woman. She was raised
with modesty and today's woman doesn't always display it according to her.
"She does watch the President if she knows he's on and says she offers a prayer that he'll be a good
President all the way through. She admits she doesn't vote any longer but keeps up enough to know who
she would vote for.
"As a special tesat, she showed this reported several pictures of her family and her wedding dress,
which she made herself. Get out the envy, girls, because you wouldn't believe the work in that dress! She
drew the pattern herself and it is so complicated to fasted that the number of pieces involved in the sewing
would be unreal.
"It is also completely lined and every seam hand-overcast, including the boning. (Not to mention the
rows of pleating down the front of the skirt and in many places on the blouse, all perfectly even and hand-
made!)
"Now turn really green, ladies, the waist measures 22 inches at the absolute maximum!
"And from this little lady, the youngest of seven shildren, has come quite a family: three children -
Vernon Coss of Willmar, Dortha Joyner of Pasadena, California, and Gladys
Lindberg of Muncie, Indiana; nine grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. With a family and
husband, Mrs. Coss still found the time to be an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Willmar,
and go through all the offices of the Eastern Star (Rebekkah Lodge) here."

more interesting happenings and characters of years one by.
I told them about the time you and Ed Hummel were at Rocky Mountain, Halsey Davidson may also
have been there. Jess Lombard and I cooked the dinner held at my home, racoon and wild goose were
featured. Following this gourmet feast we applied a secret potion to your scalp to stimulate the growth of
new hair in your failing, luxurious pelt. We used a chore boy, ketchup, worchester sauce, goose and
racoon grease. We took turns massaging your scalp. The following day you wore your hat constantly to
shield your fiery top knot from view."
