OBITUARY
Mrs. Anna Jane Spencer
Died at Ellerbe on last Wednesday at Home of Her Son
Mrs. Annie Jane Spencer, widow of the late Michael Spencer, of the
Poplar Ridge section of Randolph County died on last Wednesday night at
the home of her son, Thomas A. Spencer at Ellerbe.
She had been in ill health for a number of years, but bore her afflication
with exemplary fortitude. Before becoming an invalid, her mission in
life was to minister and comfort the sick and distressed, one whose life
radiated cheer and sunshine wherever she went. Wherever she lived she
will be remembered as a kind neighbor, a loving friend, a consecrated
Christian woman whose days and nights were full of good works and
deeds. After an illness of about ten days, during which time she was
scarcely conscious, she peacefully passed away to her reward. All that
the conscientious skill of the physicians could do and the constant
attention of her sorrowing children and loving friends was of no avail.
She had received the Master's summons, "Come up Higher."
The funeral was at the Marlboro Friend's Church at which she has been a
life-long member. (See Note 1) She was the mother of thirteen children
of whom nine survive to mourn their loss. The children are Mr. T.A.
Spencer, Ellerbe; A.A. Spencer, Carthage; Mrs. J.L. Briles, Caraway; Mrs.
Tima E. Bruton of Raleigh; Mrs. R. J. Harris of Conway, S.C., Mrs. Frank

Note 1: Anna Jane was not a life-long Quaker. She was born a Methodist
and Michael was disowned by the Meeting when they married. After their
first three children were born, they took the children and became
members of Marlboro Meeting.
Note 2: A.A., Enos and Tom were lumbermen. They bought land for timber
and then sold it. A.A. and Enos worked together before A.A. moved to
Carthage and Enos moved to Marion. A.A. moved first to Asheboro in 1890
from Back Creek. At Back Creek, Enos and A.A. owned a lumber kiln, the
first in the county. When it burned, A.A. moved to Asheboro.
