Howell was born in Washington Co., Tn. In 1840 his parents Roland and Margaret Ellis Hodges moved to Washington Co., AR. The family came the entire distance by boat, following the TN, OH, Ms. and AR. rivers to Van Buren AR. Van Buren was then a small village. Mr. Hodges says the first thing that attracted his attention after landing was the Pillary that had been erected for the whipping malefactors. Howell is listed as a Civil War Veteran. In his writings He states that his maternal grandfather was John Ellis. 1830 Howell died at his son's home in Rogers, AR Parents: Roland HODGES and Margaret ELLIS.
