He was born at the old Johnson place near Mt. Pleasant in what
is nowForsyth County, North Carolina. His parents died when he
was a child,and he was raised by his aunt Lydia Elrod Johnson,
who was his mother'ssister and the second wife of James
Johnson, his grandfather. This auntLydia was therefore his
step grand mother. She had no children of herown, but raised
quite a few of the children of her relatives. WhenHiram was
10 years old, he went to Farmington to live with
hishalf-brother George Wesley Johnson. Here he grew up, worked
in the brickstore and learned this business. He went ot East
Bend in Yadkin Countyand operated a store of his own. Here he
met and married SusanPoindexter. During the Civil War he was
made salt agent for thegovernment and located at Jonesville,
Yadkin County. He hauled salt bywagon from Fayetteville and
other places. After the war, he went toCalifornia with the
intention of moving his family there, but returnedand lived in
