In 1860 John and Louisa and their first two children lived in Cane Hill Twp. near his brother, Rev. Thomas Leach. John M. was killed in the C.W. at Ft Gibson, Indian Territory. Descendent George Leach writes that Louisa heard of his death shortly after it happened; she and a neighbor woman went from Cane Hill, AR., to Ft. Gibson, IT (appro. 60 miles) by ox and sled. They found John's body with the top of his head blown off; someone had built a fence around the body to protect it from animals. John was a Mason and the ring finger upon which he wore hi Masonic ring was missing. It must have taken the better part of two weeks to travel the 120 miles by ox and sled, but they returned with his body to Cane Hill for burial. John was serving in Capt. Shannon's Company, Gen. Stand Watie's command of the Cherokee Cavalry at the time of his death. (NOTE: Stand Watie was a Cherokee Chief who became a Confederate General, achieved prominence, and was highly regarded. He was credited with personally outfitting many of his men and being the last Confederate General to surrender.) In 1870 Louisa was listed as head of her household, with sons Lewis, George, Frances and Samuel still in the home. In 1880 Louisa is still in Cane Hill Twp., with Fannie and Sam. She gave her father's birthplace as IL and her mother SC. Neither John or Louisa are listed in the Was. CO. Cemeteries but descendent George Leach verified they are both buried in the Cane Hill Cemetery. Parents: Thomas LEACH and Ruth RENSHAW.
