In 1039 Gruffydd became king of Gwynedd and Powys by killing Iago ap Idwal.
I n 1055, after a long struggle, he seized the kingdom of Deheubarth upon the
de ath of its king. About 1057, he drove out the ruler of Glamorgan and seized
t hat kingdom also. Thus from that year, until his death in 1063, he became
the only man in history to rule over all of Wales until the time of the
English c onquest. Taking advantage of serious problems in the kingdom of
England, Gruff ydd regained territory beyond Offa's dyke which had been in
English hands for over three hundred years. In 1039, at Rhyd-y-groes, he
defeated the forces of Leofric, Earl of Mercia. IN 1055, in alliance with
Leofric's son, Aelfgar, w ho had been exiled through the scheming of the sons
of Godwine, Earl of Wessex , Gruffydd burned Hereford and expelled a large
portion of the English populat ion in the borderlands and subjected several
towns east of Offa's dyke to his rule. Eight years later, in 1063, Godwine's
son, Harold, the future King of E ngland, led forces over land and sea to
defeat Gruffydd. Gruffydd was persued from place to place and was killed
somewhere in Snowdonia on 5 August 1063. One source says he met his death
through treason by his own men.
Another stat es that he was slain by Cynan ap Iago in revenge for Gruffydd's
slaying of his father at the beginning of his rise to power almost a quarter
century earlier .

3. Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, (l007-63) w as King of all Wales only from l055 to
l063, yet he was the only Welsh ruler t o unite the ancient kingdoms of the
whole of Wales. Gwynfor Evans points out t hat though for five centuries the
people of Wales had shared a common language , culture, history, religion and
for the most part a common law, it was only u nder Gruffudd ap Llywelyn that it
had a single sovereign, and thus a measure o f political unity. Gruffudd was a
grandson of Maredudd ab Owain, King of Deheu barth and the son of Llywelyn ap
Seisyllt, ruler of Gwynedd. By force of arms, he seized Gwynedd and Powys, and
overthrew Deheubarth, Gwent and Morgannwg. W alter Map, in "De Nugis Curalium"
(c.ll80), recorded the kings' account of his military campaigns against his
fellow Welsh: "Speak not of killing. I do but blunt the horns of the offpsring
of Wales, lest they should wound their dam."

Gruffudd was even successful in reclaiming lands east of Offa's Dyke from th e
English settlers. He established his court at Rhuddlan, in the heart of an a rea
settled by Mercians, and his conquests of areas of Northeast Wales formerl y
part of the earldom of Chester meant that they would remain Welsh as parts o f
the later counties of Flintshire and Denbighshire. His very successes, howev er,
led to the invasion of Wales by Harold, Earl of Wessex. During the fightin g,
Gruffudd was assassinated by a fellow Welshman. Wales was never again wholl y
united under a single sovereign though Llywelyn ap Iorweth's successes over a
century later surpassed those of his predecessor.
