FuneralNotice
The earthly pilgrimage of Mrs. G. J. Boyd came to a close last Saturday
morning shortly after eight o'clock. She had been slowly drifting toward the
other shore for several weeks. She had neither ache nor pain, but just grew
weaker with each passing day, until finally the frail body, weary of the burdens
and the cares of the years, ceased to function, and the Spirit, freed of its
tenement of clay, took its flight to the Realms Above.
The deceased came to Guthrie county many years ago and enjoyed the
acquaintance of most of the settlers of the early days, but with advancing age,
with its many infirmities, she had been content to just keep the home fires burning
while going down the valley with the husband, the companion of the years, and
to enjoy to the full the occasional visits of the children and the grandchildren,
friends from a distance, and the daily visits of the near neighbors.
She was a good wife, mother and neighbor, and many friends will attest
to her many estimable qualities.
Hester J. Mathewson was born March 1, 1837, in Barkley county, Maryland,
and passed away Saturday, August 27, 1921, at her home in Jamaica, Iowa, aged
84 years, 5 months and 26 days.
At the age of seven years she with her parents moved to Clear Springs,
Maryland, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage with G. J.
Boyd of that place on Nov. 18, 1858. To this union were born eight children
as follows: J. S. Boyd of Tacoma, Washington; Fanny Culiver, Des Moines, Iowa;
Lida Crosswait, Lake City, Iowa; Lula Boyd, Clarinda, Iowa; and Edwin, Katy,
Maggie and Allis M. who preceded the mother to the Great Beyond.
The family home was maintained at Clear Springs until 1872, when the
deceased with her husband and family started out for the west. They first settled
in Benton county, Iowa where they resided for eight years. In 1880 the family
came to Guthrie county settling near Herndon, and at which place they continued
to reside until 1918, when the home here in Jamaica was purchased and the change
of residence was made.
The deceased united with the M. E. church in early life and lived a
consistent christian life until called to her heavenly home, there to receive
the blessings accorded to the faithful followers of the cross.
Besides the aged and feeble husband and the four children, there are
left to mourn ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and the many friends
and acquaintances.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30, at the United
Brethren church and were conducted by Rev. S. B. Clark, U. B. minister.
The song service was given by Mesdames Kathryn Kempf and V. W. Towne
and Misses Lena Shuman, Gladys Ballard and Mildred Kempf.
The pall bearers were G. W. Heater, Harlow Towne, Wm. Shuman, Charles
Towne and V. S. Hiddleson.
Internment was made at Richland cemetery.
