Luke Matthew's Jr, was born in Campbell County Virginia, September 20, 1796. He was a
descendent of Samuel Matthews , an early Colonial Governor. He was one of eight children. He
and his brother Samuel were the only ones to migrate to Alabama.

These brothers possibly came down soon after the county was opened, for records show that
Luke entered several sections of land on February 19, 1818, the date of the first land sale. On
March 8, 1826, he married Miss Judith Peete. It is believed it was shortly after his marriage that
he built the large brick home called "Cotton Hill" in Limestone County. This mansion reeks of the
old plantation days. It whispers of lawn parties, and ladies in flowing hoop skirts, and darkies
moving about with large trays and frequent flashes of white teeth bared by smiles of happiness.
When he prepared to erect the mansion, he drew his own plans, then turned to a neighboring
contractor who had built numerous homes in Limestone County.

bricks for the 18 inch thick wall were made on the plantation. Certain abutments on the rear of
the mansion indicate that the owners planned to enlarge it. The contractor, Mr. William Parham,
was exceptionally good at cabinet work, and each door, each mantel piece and similar items of
woodwork were cut by hand. It was a large rectangular building, fashioned after that of the
prevailing period in Virginia. There were four large rooms, two upstairs and two downstairs, two
hallways and a three room basement. Windows were large and numerous, front doors opening
onto double porches only, were 12 to 15 ft square, were set off by fanlight transoms. Brick walks
in the rear led to the kitchen and store rooms, and carriage house and stables. Two theories
exist as to how the plantation got its name "Cotton Hill". One is that the red soil on the farm was
so rich that it was a leader in producing cotton. The other and accepted as more likely, to be true
explains that it received its name from the cottonwood trees, which with the black locusts, oaks
and sycamore, covered the hill.

Matthews was recognized as a kind master to his slaves. At the time of the residence of this
home, he was owner of a 1,000 acre plantation. From its site on a natural rise over-looking the
road from the north, the home watched its owner and builder expand his fortune into that of a
typical and prosperous southern cotton planter. Children arrived, four in all, visitors were
numerous, and hospitality abounded, then the lady of the house died.

In a short time the family moved away from this home. With four small children and a large
plantation on his hands, Luke lost little time in looking about for another wife. On January 26,
1843, he married Lucy Ann Spotswood, daughter of Elliott and Sarah Dandridge Spotswood of
Madison County, Alabama. They moved to a new home in this county near Elco Switch. During
the years of the Civil War, Luke and his family moved to a home on Adams Avenue, Huntsville.
Later, he bought and lived in the large home on McClung Street, where he died August 1, 1875
at the age of 79.

Luke was a tall, thin man with a narrow face, aquiline nose, and sideburns. His principal and
most valuable characteristic was that of Justice. He believed in paying his debts, and had no
patience with those who did not. With this policy, coupled with good business sense, there was
little to keep him from amassing wealth, back in that period when cotton could be grown so easily
on the rich, virgin soil. He bought more land, more cattle, and in time, became one of the largest
land owners and wealthiest men in North Alabama. Parents: Luke MATTHEWS and Lucinda FOX.

Article on "Working Retirees"

CAROLYN ROSENBAUM
Staff Writer

Margaret Scott has an "I don't care" attitude about retirement. Her concept is, "I don't care for it." The 78 year-old Abingdon resident, who is often spotted driving her green MGB around town, said quitting work at retirement age can be disastrous for the older citizen who can no longer makes "contributions to life or create his own happiness."

At her age, Mrs. Scott is still making contributions - and by no means is retired from the mainstream of life. Twenty hours a week she is coordinator for a local senior volunteer program.

Anne Leibig, director of Clinch River Educational Center in Abingdon, said a heathy person needs to love and to work. Work, she said, can be defined different ways, but primarily it is "interacting with the world and creating something meaningful." People need creative interaction with the world, she continued, saying that some people require a sructured work environment while others can be creative in their own homes by participating in volunteer and political services or any other opportunity that makes a creative environment, she said.

Mrs. Scott is an example of the many citizens, 56 and older, in the Mountain Empire, as well as throughout the United States, who have chosen to • return to work after their retirement because they feel bored, miss interaction with people or simply want to supplement their incomes or social security checks.
Mrs. Scott, a youthful-looking lady who was a journalist serving as society reditor for a newspaper in Alabama, I explained that her "cute little car" that takes her to work each day," is called "Perseus." She queries, "You know, Perseus the god that had wings on his feet?" " I just call it Persy, though." Mrs. Scott, retrieving her appointment calendar, scanned her schedule to find a free day on which she has not committed herself to helping others. "Looks like I'm free on Tuesday of next week," she said, explaining that her work often allows her to travel to Glade Spring, Darnascus, Abingdon, Clinchburg and Benhams several days a week to assist as coordinator of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP}, a national program sponsoreel locally by District 3 Governmental Cooperative, an area agency on aging for the Mount Rogers Planning District.

She said the first thing she did after she arrived in Abingdon two years ago was to report to the Senior Center & Services where she volunteered to help. She loved her work so much that she obtained a part-time, salaried job from RSVP. "And, I've been going great guns every since." she said, adding that she's worked for the agency for the past two years.

She loves being involved with the public, and of course, the additional income is very nice, she admitted.

But Mrs. Scott feels getting involved is the key to life. She says she's fortunate to have lived such a wonderful life. She enjoyed the journalism career and later raised a family. During the middle 1960's she was a medical staff secretary at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham until her retirement in 1973 when she was 65.

A 1966 survey conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons shows that of its 24 million members, as many as 26 percent of the citizens 50 and older work. A spokesperson from AARP said the number of older citizens who are working is growing rapidly.

Sarah's mother is found in the Crawford County MO census as A R (1850) and Rosanna (1860). In both cens us the father's name does not appear. The 1850 Crawford Co MO census lists
A R Mathis 40 F Widowed KY
M Mathis 15 F KY
G W Mathis 12 M KY
S E Mathis 10 F MO; this is Sarah Evans
N J Mathis 6 F MO; this is Sarah's sister who married William Stewart.
Ann Pedcock 76 F Widowed VA, I am assuming this is Rosanna's Mother.
Wm Pedcock 26 M Farmer TN
Note: There are other Pedcock's on the 1850 MO census living near by Rosannah who were born in KY. Based on the dates and location of births. I am assuming Rosanna & family move to MO from KY around 18 38-1840. Husband and father William Mathews/Mathis died after 1844 and before 1 850 based on youngest child birthday and missing from 1850 census. Rosanna Pidc ock and William Harr Matthews show up in the Hopkins County KY marriage records as getting married in 1833. This is consistent with the oldest child (M Mathis ) being born in KY in 1835.
