(2,5) 1790: Removed to KY. (5) Traveled to KY in a large party of 12 boats,
commanded by Capt. Forman. They embarked at the old Red Stone Fort, on the
Monongahela River, and came down the Ohio River.
(5) 1790, 25 Dec: Reached Limestone (now Maysville), KY. There was but one log
cabin there then, built by the Boones. The water was so low and the mud so
deep on the bank that they were obliged to take their vehicles apart and carry
them off the boats, piece by piece.
(5) He moved his family back beyond the Kentucky River to escape the Indians.
(5) 1791: He returned to Mason Co., KY and located about 6 miles from
Limestone (Maysville).
(2) 1795/6: Settled on the farm "recently owned by Oliver Jones" in Jefferson
Twp., Adams Co., OH, near Blue Creek post office. There were no settlements
made outside the stockade at Three Islands, or Manchester, previous to 1795,
and this date is probably the year that Moore's cabin was erected on Scioto
Brush Creek, although it may have been a year later.
(1a) 1797: "It has been reasonably established that Joseph Moore was the first
Methodist preacher in the Northwest Territory, having started a Methodist
Society near Blue Creek, Ohio, Adams County, in 1797." (2) The first Methodist
Society organized in the Northwest Territory was at the humble cabin of Joseph
Moore on Scioto Brush Creek in Adams County. In 1797 there was quite a number
of settlers in the vicinity of Moore's cabin, and it was here and in this year
that the Pioneer Methodist Society in Ohio, and the Northwest Territory, was
organized. It is stated that Dr. Edward Tiffin, the first Governor of the
State of Ohio, visited the class at Moore's in the year 1797. The congregation
was organized among Joseph Moore's old New Jersey neighbors.
(2) 1799, 3 Jun: Thomas Parker and Sarah his wife of Frederick Co., VA deed to
Joseph Moore of Adams Co., OH, for $50.50, lot 45 on Thomas Street,
Alexandria, Adams Co., OH. Signed by Alexander Parker, atty for Thomas and
Mary. Wits. William Russell, Andrew Collins. On the same date, Thomas and
Mary deed to John Moore of Adams Co. for $50.50 another lot in Alexandria, and
P. (his mark) Moore and John (o his mark) Moore witness a need from Alexander
Parker and Mary his wife of Westmoreland Co., PA, atty for Thomas and Sarah,
to John Belli of Adams Co., for $100, in-lot 8 and out-lots 2 & 3 in
Alexandria. (NOTE: There was another Joseph Moore, stonemason and J.P., of
Adams Co., and these deeds could be for either. Included here because of the
VA connection.)
(2) 1800: Emigrated to Blue Creek in Adams Co., OH. (NOTE: Conflicts with above
date.) (5) In 1800 he moved onto the Brush Creek Branch of Scioto River in
order to get into a community of his old New Jersey neighbors.
(1a) 1800: Built a log church. (1) Organized Moore's Chapel, the first church
in Adams Co., OH and claimed to be the oldest in all of Ohio. (2) Rev. Henry
Smith, who organized the Scioto Circuit in 1799, says that "on the sixth of
August, 1800, we proposed building a meeting house at Scioto Brush Creek, for a
private house would not hold our week-day congregation; but we met with some
who opposed it. We however succeeded in building a small log house, large
enough for the neighborhood." It was named Salem Chapel, but afterwards called
Moore's Meeting House. It was the first Methodist Meeting House in the State of
Ohio. It was begun in the winter of 1800 and completed the summer following.

his death.
