Name Suffix:<NSFX> Earl Of Leices ter
Edmund Plantegenet by name Crouchback (b. Jan. 16, 1245, London, England - d. c.\June 5, 1296, Bayonne, France), fourth (but second surviving) son of Kin g Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence , who founded the house of Lanca ster.
At the age 10, Edmund was invested by P ope Innocent IV with the kingdom of Sicily (April 1255) , as an expression of h is conflict with the Holy Roman emperor, who held Sicily; but Edmund was never more than an absentee titular k ing, and Pope Alexander IV canceled the grant (D ecember 1258).
In 1265 Edmund received the earldom of Leicester, and two year s later was created Earl of La ncaster. He joined the crusade of his elder broth er, the Lord Edward (1271-127 2); and Edward on his accession as King Edward I, found in Edmund a loyal suppo rter. In 1275, two years after the death of his fi rst wife, Edmund married Bla nche of Artois, the widow of Henry III of Navarre a nd Champagne, and assumed t he title Count Palatine of Champagne and Brie. When the court of King Philip IV of France pronounced that the king of England had f orfeited Gascony, Edmund r enounced his homage to Philip and withdrew with his w ife to England. He was ap pointed lieutenant of Gascony in 1296but died in the s ame year, leaving his So n Thomas to succeed him in his English possession.
Ed mund's nickname "Crouchb ack" (meaning "Crossback," or crusader) was misinterpre ted, probably intention ally, by his direct descendant. King Henry IV, who, in c laiming the throne (13 99), asserted that Edmund had really been Henry III's eld est son but had been disinherited as a hunchback.

Reigned 1307-1327 deposed and murde red. 1st Prince of Wales His reign was troubled by extravagances, his militaris t disasters in Scotland notably at Bannockburn (1314) and unpopularity of his f avourite peers Piers de Gaveston who died in 1312 and Hugh le Despencer 1262-13 26.

REF: British Monarchy Official Website: Edward II (reigned 1307-27) had few of the qualities which made a successful medieval king. He surrounded himse lf with favourites, and the barons, feeling excluded from power, rebelled. Thro ughout his reign different baronial groups struggled to gain power and control the King. The nobles' Ordinances of 1311, which attempted to limit royal contro l of finance and appointments, were ignored by Edward. Large debts (many inheri ted) and the Scots' victory at Bannockburn made Edward more unpopular. Finally, in 1326, Edward's wife, Isabelle of France, led an invasion
against her husba nd. In 1327 Edward was made to renounce the throne in favour of his son, Edward , and was later murdered at Berkeley Castle
Acceded 1307-1327.

Edward II
E dward II (reigned 1307-27) had few of the qualities that made a successful medi eval king. Edward surrounded himself with favourites (the best known being a Ga scon, Piers Gaveston), and the barons, feeling excluded from power, rebelled. T hroughout his reign, different baronial groups struggled to gain power and cont rol the King. The nobles' ordinances of 1311, which attempted to limit royal co ntrol of finance and appointments, were counteracted by Edward. Large debts (ma ny inherited) and the Scots' victory at Bannockburn by Robert the Bruce in 1314 made Edward more unpopular.
Edward's victory in a civil war (1321-2) and suc h measures as the 1326 ordinance (a protectionist measure which set up compulso ry markets or staples in 14 English, Welsh and Irish towns for the wool trade) did not lead to any compromise between the King a Parents: King Of England Edward ENGLAND I and Princess Of France Marguerite LE HARDI. Geoffrey IV, also called GEOFFREY PLANTAGENET, byname GEOFFREY THE FAIR, French GEOFFROI PLANTAGENET, or GEOFFROI le BEL (b. Aug. 24, 1113--d. Sept. 7, 1151, Le Mans, Maine [France]), count of Anjou (1131-51), Maine, and Touraine and anc estor of the Plantagenet kings of England through his marriage, in June 1128, t o Matilda (q.v.), daughter of Henry I of England. On Henry's death (1135), Geof frey claimed the duchy of Normandy; he finally conquered it in 1144 and ruled t here as duke until he gave it to his son Henry (later King Henry II of England) in 1150.

Geoffrey was popular with the Normans, but he had to suppress a re bellion of malcontent Angevin nobles. After a short war with Louis VII of Franc e, Geoffrey signed a treaty (August 1151) by which he surrendered the whole of Norman Vexin (the border area between Normandy and Île-de-France) to Louis. --------------------------------------------- -----------------

The Plantagenet family name was originally just a nickname for Geoffrey. He many times wore a sprig with yellow flowers in his hat. The flower was named "genet" or "genistae" in the French of the times--thus his ni ckname was "Plant-a-Genet". Genet was supposedly a traditional flower of the A njou family dating back to the time of Fulk, The Great, Count of Anjou 898-941 who was scourged (in order to atone for past sins) with broom twigs of the Gene t while on pilgrimage in Jerusalem. Most people of the times had personal nic knames such as "Beauclerc", "Curtmantel", "Longshanks", and "Lackland", but Ge offrey's stuck and eventually (many generations later) became the family name. Geoffrey's immediate descendants were probably not known as the Plantagenet fa mily at the time they lived, it was only later that the Plantagenet family name was applied to all descendants of Geoffrey. Henry III
Henry III (reigned 1216-1272), John's son, was only nine
when he became King. By 1227, when he assumed power from
his regent, order had bee n restored, based on his
acceptance of Magna Carta. However, the King's faile d
campaigns in France (1230 and 1242), his choice of friends
and advisers, together with the cost of his scheme to make
one of his younger sons King of Sicily and help the Pope
against the Holy Roman Emperor, led to further dispu tes
with the barons and united opposition in Church and State.
Although Hen ry was extravagant and his tax demands were
resented, the King's accounts sho w a list of many
charitable donations and payments for building works
(incl uding the rebuilding of Westminster Abbey which began
in 1245).
The Provisi ons of Oxford (1258) and the Provisions of
Westminster (1259) were attempts b y the nobles to define
common law in the spirit of Magna Carta, control
app ointments and set up an aristocratic council. Henry
tried to defeat them by o btaining papal absolution from his
oaths, and enlisting King Louis XI's help. Henry renounced
the Provisions in 1262 and war broke out. The barons, under
their leader, Simon de Montfort, were initially successful
and even capture d Henry. However, Henry escaped, joined
forces with the lords of the Marches (on the Welsh border),
and Henry finally defeated and killed de Montfort at t he
Battle of Evesham in 1265. Royal authority was restored by
the Statute o f Marlborough (1267), in which the King also
promised to uphold Magna Carta a nd some of the Provisions
of Westminster.

Henry's brother Richard of C ornwall sent 50 ships of grain
from Germany (where Richard was chasing the el usive crown
of Germany) to London to help alleviate the famine, Henry

This enraged the genera l populace of London, Henry backed
down but they remained bitter. After Henry reconciled with
Prince Edward through the mediation of Richard of Cornwall
(Henry thought Edward was plotting with Simon de Montfort),
Henry attempted to try de Montfort on charges of perjery &
