David and William ,his brother rec'd grant #703 for 770 acres in 1756. This was a grant from Lord Fairfax.
In 1769 moved into what is now Washington Co., Pennsylvania . They remained there through the Rev. War with many of the Rankins being involved with the Patriotic Forces,mostly in the Rangers. In 1790 David Rankin II,his wife and most of his children and their families moved to Harrison Co.,KY near Cynthiana, where they bought land and made their homes. David died there in 1795

David Rankin, the Elder and imigrant to America, lived near Winchester, Virginia (his will is on file there), and had sons William, Hugh, David, and daughter Barbara.
Son William settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania and stayed there. Son David lived for a while in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Malle B. Coyle (deceased) went to Washington County in the summer of 1970 and found the location of the lands owned by David. He called one Ballytoy and the other Horns Head. He sold these plantations before moving to Harrison Co., Kentucky. According to records, the Rankin fam,ily came to America about the year 1720. They came from Ireland but were Scottish descent.
David Rankin and all his sons and sons-in-law served in the Revolutionary War. David was a Ranger on the Frontier of Pennsylvania, and his name appears in the list of Washington Co. Militia Men who received pay for their services between 1770 and 1783.
