Settled near Kingfisher OK in 1892. Man came by the Ray Co MO place offering the homestead. They chartered a rail car, loaded all their furniture, wagon and team of mules. Left train at Kingsfisher, traveled 65 miles to site. Lived in sod house cut into side of hill. Cedar logs on roof with sod covering. Framed front with door and 2 windows. Dirt floor. Burned gypsum rock to make cement, which was spread over floor. Corral within rifle shot to hold animals in case of Indian attack. Indians never showed up. Dalton gang came by one day to water horses. Asked if wife could cook them a meal. She did so, and leader supposedly left a $20 gold piece under his plate when they left to go to Coffeyville, Kansas, where they rode into an ambush, on Oct 5, 1892.
Back in MO for 1900 census.
Apparently back in OK about 1905 or 06. Built house on hill outside of Porter, finished the house on his 50th birthday--1907. Lived there until his death.
Wolves ran in area. Dogs would chase one wolf away from farm, then wolf would chase dogs back. One night Reuben got tired of it, hid in shadow of barn with a double barrelled shotgun, and when the dogs and wolf came back, he shot the third animal. The wolf weighed 80 lbs.

Richard not mentioned by McCracken as son of Peter and Mary, but name appears in a deed relinquishing claim to Peter's property written after Peter's death intestate. In a note at the top Richard appears as second child. In the deed his name is crossed out and written in later as "late of Simsbury". He had moved to Hartford, CT. He signed the deed in April 1726, but only William is recorded as appearing with it in Nov 1727. The deed mentions Timothy as deceased. Parents: Peter RICE and Mary FORD.

Was in Cambridge briefly in 1636, then moved to Concord MA in 1636. In 1684 made testimony in regard to the settlement of Concord. This was the year of distress when the colonists were told that their lands were forfeit to the King. Had two woves, first named Elizabeth, second named Mary.
Richard was last survivor of the original settlers of Concord and lived in a house on Lexington Road. He died 1709, about same time as daughter Abigail and four granchidren. Some of his descendants may have migrated from Concord to the valley of the Connecticut as far as Saybrook. Other settlements in Sharon, Simsbury and Granby.

p 199, Appendix A. Earliest settlers--includes the name Rice. Richard Rice's name is included on the 1664 petition pledging to assist with persons and estates in maintaining the Charter. (the earliest list of inhabitants, but incomplete)
p 201, Appendix A--Richard Rice listed on the list of Proprietors of 1666. (List of Concord men who had rights in Acton {Concord Village}). Each of the inhabitants of 1666 or 1684 had a five acre right which belonged to his heirs or assigns. In a few cases, the name of the original owner was not known in 1723 and the right was listed under the name of the contemporary owner of the lot. This list was found in an attic in Temple, New Hampshire in 1933 and is now in the Public Library by gift of the heirs of Allen French. It is more completer than the 1664 list. It is not arranged alphabetically because the clerk, John Flint, seems to have thought of the names more or less according to the neighborhood in which they lived, just as later assessor's lists were made.
p 201, Appendix A, a list of the second order of proprietors (1694) includes the names Peter and Paul Rice. (this is 5 years after Peter is supposed to have moved to Simsbury-Ted Rice)
p 221, Appendix E, Old Roads-On Lexington Road, beyond the Minots, were the Fletcher farm; John Jones and Nathaniel Stow with Daniel Brooks, Jr, and Sr. on the hillside; Joseph Brooks on the hilltop; and Noah, Hugh, and Joshua Brooks on the east side of the hill sloping down to the tanyard. Two Hartwell houses beyond the Woburn Road corner, one a tavern, were followed by a Whittemore place and next to the old town line were Ebenezer Lamson, Dr. Philip Reade and Richard Rice, who died in 1709, last survivor of the first settlers. The Rice house burned to the ground in 1953 as it was considered not worth saving.
