Franks, and one of the earliest rulers of the Merovingian dynasty of the Franks
from 481-511. King of the Ripar ian Franks (Riparian - dwellers by the river
bank = ripa) He married Princess Clotilda, dtr of Chilperic, and niece of Gundobad.
She was a Burgundian Christi an and converted Clovis at their marriage in 496.
Baptised by Remy, Bishop of R heims. Clovis overthrew the Gallo-Roman colony
ruled by Syagrius, near Soisson in 486. The Alemanni (Alamanni) crossed the Rhine
and attacked the Franks who w ere led by Clovis. Clovis and his army Defeated
the Alamanni at Tolbiacum (Zul pich), near the Rhine in 496. (near Strasbourg)
- the Alamanni had settled the Alsace-Lorraine area in 443) Convinced that his
prayers to the Christian God ha d been answered and helped him defeat the enemy,
Clovis then was baptized, alon g with several thousand of his followers, and
so Christianity came to the pagan kingdom of the Franks. Clovis Defeated the
West Goths in 507. The Visigoths ar e defeated at the Battle of Campus Vogladensis.
Alaric II was killed, and Clovi s annexed the Visigoth kindom of Toulouse. The
Visigoths remained in control of the Iberian Peninsula. Clovis I established
his capital at Lutetia (which beca me Paris). Clovis established the "Riparian
Right" system, of landowners rights who lived on both sides of a river or
stream, being equal to those who owned o r lived further up toward the source
of the stream. Tried to unite all the Fran ks into one kingdom, but failed. Divided
his kingdom among his four sons just b efore he died in 511. He was age 45. His
sons were Theodoric, Chlodomer, Childe bert, and Lothair, who divide the Frankish
kingdom, and rule from the capitals at Metz, Orleans, Paris, and Soissons. Theodoric
at Metz Chlodomer at Orleans Childebert at Lutetia (Paris) Lothair
at Soissons.
Clovis, bo rn abt 466, son of Childeric (abt 437-481), born at the city of
Tournai (now p art of modern Belgium).
After the defeat of the Alamanni, and his marriage t o Clotilde I of Burgundy,
who was already a Christian, Clovis the 1st allowed h imself to be converted,
and had his friend Bishop Remy (Remigius) Bishop of R heims to baptise him.
His conversion to orthodox Christianity included himsel f and his followers.
496 was the traditional date given for his conversion. Cl ovis' wife Clotilda
was of the Roman communion. From Burgundy, she followed th e Roman Church rather
than the Burgundian Arians. Clovis' choice may have been deliberate, in opposition
to the Arians. His conversion won him powerful papa l and episcopal support
and opened the way to wide conquests from the heretic ( i. e. Arian) German peoples.
Clovis the 1st succeeded his father in 481 as r uler of a band of Salian Franks
who settled about the city of Tournai (Belgium) . Clovis was a cruel and uncrupulous
leader, but proved himself to be a capabl e war leader. His was 6th of his line
known to rule the Frankish kingdom, and what became known as the Merovingian
Kings of Imperial Germany.
Soon after h e conquered Toulouse, and defeated the Visigoths, Clovis the 1st
founded the Ch urch of the Holy Apostles (Saint Genevieve) at Paris, and moved
his capital fro m Soissons to Paris. He had the warm support of the Gallo-Roman
Clergy as well as Rome in his religious wars and subjugation of the Arians, the
Visigoths, an d others. His capital on the Seine was called Lutetia Parisorum,
or just Lutet ia, later known as Paris. Paris had been a Pre-Roman settlement
on the island in the Seine, captured 52 B.C. by the Romans, and fortified, and
made a bishopr ic in the 3rd century, and came to the power of Clovis in 486.
Became the capi tal of the Kingdom of France in 987 by Hugh Capet. After conquering
all of the territory from the Rhine to the Pyrenees, Clovis wanted his capital
