#Grandma Nolan (known as Fran or Fanny to her friends)
5 foot 2, size 2 feet. After the death of her husband in 1919, she
handed over Garnavilla to her eldest son and went to live in Hassocks,
Sussex, to be near her eldest sister, Annie Eleanor(known as Aunt
Missy), who lived in Hove. I remember my ggrandmother as a tiny and
indomitable person, teaching me to toast crumpets on a fork in front of
an open fire. I was three. She was brave and tough, she held the
family together. Extract from her grandson John Hogg's diary "July 6th
1938. I see in my entry for June 7th I... touched on the subject of
flying. Since then a very notable event has occurred; for to my great
surprise and amusement I learnt this morning that Granny and Lizzy
Stanley stepped out of the aeroplane at Ryde 'as you would from a
railway carriage' to use Mummy's words.So Granny has quietly beaten the
whole of us! To think that a woman of 76 shoudl overcome the very
natural Victorian prejudice and venture to fly is to my mind quite
astonishing. There I was picturing in my mind the trouble we would have
trying to coax her and now without a word to anyone she showed us how
antiquated we are! Here is an example to all Grandmothers!"
When catastrophe struck, "the harm of the year go with it" said
Grandma. It must have been that attitude that enabled her to endure the
deaths of five of her nine children and her husband, and to go on

flat,country cottage) but by the time he died, "Uncle Frank, who seemed
to have inherited his father's extravagance" had fallen on hard times.
Extract from John Hogg'sdiaries April 5th 1939
"During the last week Noel [Sargint] confided the secret of the fate of
Alexander Shelley's watch.....a very fine gold, repeating affair and
had a double interest as being the only relic of that ancestor except
his miniature and his silhouette [these were sent to Garnavilla by MDH
before she died, as she felt they belonged there]. Frank Sargint
inherited it, and kept it till nearly the end of his life, which was I
suppose surprising since he had all his father's extravagance magnified
to a high degree;anyhow, shortly before the end of his days, he began
entertaining on a very lavish scale and - he pawned the watch. Uncle
Frank had made provision for Noel to inherit it, but being a most
unmethodical person, the document could not be found, nor, which was
far more important, could the pawn ticket. Ernest Bolton, Uncle Frank's
great friend, told Noel, continuing meanwhile the search.
After the time which pawnshops allow for the redemption of the pawn had
expired ..Bolton found the ticket in some book...but alas! it was too
late for the watch was gone from the shop and sold into alien hands." Parents:
