Burial] He was also known as Alexander II King Of Scotland.14 He was buried in Melrose Abbey, Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: Unknown-Begin] Alexander was the only son of William the Lion and his wife Ermengarde. Born at Haddington, East Lothian on 24 August 1198, he was knighted by King John of En gland on 4 March 1212. Two years later, he succeeded his father. Although Alexa nder backed the barons who forced John to sign the Magna Carta, in 1221 he marr ied John's eldest daughter Joan in York. She had no children, and died in 1238. The following year at Roxburgh, he married Marie, daughter of Enguerand, Baron de Coucy in Picardy - an alliance which raised English fears of a Franco-Scott ish alliance. The long-standing dispute between Scotland and England over th e Border was settled in 1237 when, by the Treaty of York, Alexander renounced S cotland's claims to the three northern counties of England in exchange for the honour of Tynedale and the manor of Penrith. The border between Scotland and En gland was now fixed almost exactly on its present line from the lower Tweed in the east to the Solway Firth in the west. Alexander died on the island of Kerre ra, Argyllshire in 1249 whilst preparing to take the Hebrides from Norway. He w as buried at Melrose Abbey, Roxburghshire. Fought without s uccess for MATILDA, his niece, in the struggle for the English crown between S TEPHEN and Matilda. He did realize his main aim, securing Northumberland. His r ule of Scotland was felicitous. David II (David Bruce), 1324-71 (r.1329-71), w ent to France after EDWARD III and Edward de BALIOL invaded Scotland in 1332. He invaded England in 1346, was captured, and held until ransomed in1357. David I (b. c. 1082--d. May 24, 1153, Carlisle, Cumberland, Eng.), one of the m ost powerful Scottish kings (reigned from 1124). He admitted into Scotland an A nglo-French (Norman) aristocracy that played a major part in the later history of the kingdom. He also reorganized Scottish Christianity to conform with conti nental European and English usages and founded many religious communities, most ly for Cistercian monks and Augustinian canons. The youngest of the six son s of the Scottish king Malcolm III Canmore and Queen Margaret (afterward St. Ma rgaret), David spent much of his early life at the court of his brother-in-law King Henry I of England. Through David's marriage (1113) to a daughter of Walth eof, earl of Northumbria, he acquired the English earldom of Huntingdon and obt ained much land in that county and in Northamptonshire. With Anglo-Norman help, David secured from his brother Alexander I, king of Scots from 1107, the right to rule Cumbria, Strathclyde, and part of Lothian. In April 1124, on the death of Alexander, David became king of Scots. David recognized his niece, the H oly Roman empress Matilda (died 1167), as heir to Henry I in England, and from 1136 he fought for her against King Stephen (crowned as Henry's successor in De cember 1135), hoping thereby to gain Northumberland for himself. A brief peace made with Stephen in 1136 resulted in the cession of Cumberland to David and th e transfer of Huntingdon to his son Earl Henry. David, however, continued to sw itch sides. While fighting for Matilda again, he was defeated in the Battle of the Standard, near Northallerton, Yorkshire (Aug. 22, 1138). He then made peace once more with Stephen, who in 1139 granted Northumberland (as an English fief ) to Earl Henry. In 1141 David reentered the war on Matilda's behalf, and in 11 49 he knighted her son Henry Plantagenet (afterward King Henry II of England), who acknowledged David's right to Northumberland. In Scotland, David created a rudimentary central administration, issued the first Scottish royal coinage, and built or rebuilt the castles around which grew the first Scottish burghs: Edinburgh, Stirling, Berwick, Roxburgh, and perhaps Perth. As ruler of Cumbria he had taken Anglo-Normans into his service, and during his kingship many other s settled in Scotland, founding important families and intermarrying with the o lder Scottish aristocracy. Bruce, Stewart, Comyn, and Oliphant are among the no ted names whose bearers went from northern France to England during the Norman Conquest in 1066 and then to Scotland in the reign of David I. To these and oth er French-speaking immigrants, David granted land in return for specified milit ary service or contributions of money, as had been done in England from the tim e of the Conquest. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97] ----------------------- -------- Upon the death of Simon de St. Liz, Earl of Huntingdon and Northamp ton, David, son of Malcolm III, King of Scotland, had m. the deceased earl's wi dow, the Countess Maud, under the especial sanction of King Henry I. He sided with the Empress Ma ud against Stephen I but came to terms with the latter and made the Earldom ove r to his son Henry. Henry swore fealty to Stephen but subsequently fought agai nst him under the Scottish banner, which may account for Simon de St Liz's son, another Simon, being recognized as Earl of Huntingdon before Henry's death in 1152. Thereafter the Earldom was more or less bounced back and forth between t he de St Liz family and the Kings of Scotland, first being held 1157-65 by Malc olm the Maiden and (1165-74) by his brother William The Lion, King of Scots, th en by a Simon de St Liz (grandson of the first Simon and son of the second) fro m 1174 to 1184. When the third Simon de St Liz died in 1184 he left no survi ving issue and David, younger brother of the Kings of Scots just mentioned, ass umed the Earldom from 1185 (on the handing over of it to him by William the Lio n) till it was taken away from him in 1215 or 1216 by King John. He got it bac k again in 1218, however.
