So what was Elizabeth to do if she desired to resolve the marriage? Divorce was out of the question and against her beliefs. It is my opinion that she chose a praiseworthy resolution to the problem by emigrating to America with her children. In this way, she and her children removed themselves from a difficult situation without denying their own courage in their convictions to the sanctity of holy matrimony and to family. Elizabeth Shepherd never remarried. She held true to her marriage vows for the rest of her life; and so did Johne McRannald. I believe that Johne and Elizabeth were simply incompatible from the beginning.
After the departure of Elizabeth and his children to America, Johne returned to his Episcopalian faith and the Church of Ireland to live out the remainder of his years with the children of his first marriage. Tradition states that Johne McRannald died at the home of his grandson in 1760 at Stewartstown, County Tyrone. He is buried in a family plot at the nearby Ballyclog Parish cemetery. This is our second indication that Johne was not "tight laced"to any church or religion but it was his preference to be buried at a site which was of his choice, Episcopalian.
The trip across the Atlantic Ocean took about six weeks, the ship having strayed off course. The provisions became exhausted and the McReynolds family faced starvation. The trip was further complicated by the untimely arrival of Robert McReynolds; the first child born to Joseph McReynolds and his wife Sarah Dixon. Fortunately another ship hove in sight "looking like a big buzzard" as expressed by some of the passengers, and aided our ancestors to complete their journey. This information comes from a genealogy written by Claude Francis McReynolds, born 1906, at Codell, KS, a son of John Francis McReynolds and Gladys Penelope Fritts. It is apparent that a journal once existed of this voyage but I have never been able to locate it. If anyone has information on where I might acquire a copy of this journal I would certainly appreciate it greatly.
The rest is history. Our ancestors first settled in Pennsylvania and began a family legacy of pioneering spirit which we may all enjoy today with great pride and honor. I will include more information on Joseph and James McReynolds in their personal profiles which may be found on pages 83 and 90. Parents: Solomon SHEPHERD.
