Hi there. No, don't know where you went off track. Aunt Bess was
married for many years ( fifty plus?) to James Hicks. He worked for
Texaco for many years and invested well! When he retired, they gave up
the apt. in Houston where they had lived for many years and bought a
place at Kemah where they could go fishing about 360 days per year. When
Hurricane Carla came calling (You remember her), they packed some
overnight bags and went to a hotel in Houston. They lost it all. House,
boat, belongings, you nam it. Then almost exactly six weeks later, Jimmy
had a heart attack and died. Aunt Bess was lost. Didn't know what to do
or where to go for the rest of her life. She became very close to your
father's cousin, Willene Smith, Uncle Bill's daughter. Willene stayed
close, loved her and helped her as much as she could. Interesting and
poingnant side note: About a month or six weeks after Jimmy's death, the
photographic studio, Giddings, called Aunt Bess and after asking first
for Jimmy, proceeded to tell her that the photograqph he had ordered was
ready and when did she plan to pick it up. He had had a photograph made
of himself to give her for anniversary or birthday and she didn't even
know it. Aunt Bess lived in Houston, then came out to live with Grace,
your Grandmother, and moved back and forth for the rest of her years. She
was a heavy smoker and developed lung and laryngeal cancer. Resulted in
losing one lung (It think) and her voice box. A hole in her throat to
breathe thru and speak. I think she developed more complications just as
she was learning to talk again. After that she used the little device.
She continued to live with Grandmother until her (Bess's ) death. She
never got along with your father. She continued to depend on Willene for
many things. At her death, she left their youngest brother Harry a
sizable sum (10,000?) and about $16,000 to Grandmother and the rest went
to Willene. Even the little things.Aunt Bess and Clemens Appling used to
love to go fishing together, altho with the "hole" in her neck, she could
no longer get on a boat. One of our favorite stories is where she and
Clemens were fishing together and someone Clemens knew caqme up and
started chatting with him. He finally remembered his manners and turned
to introduce Aunt Bess, and just stopped. Then said, "Aunt Bess, what is
your name anyway?" She told this many times herself. She was a great
gal. The other sister was Thelma (Hart?) I don't remember when she
moved to Washington. Bess (John.s sister) went to stay with her during
the war and worked at the shipyards until after the war was over. I met
Thelma a time or two. She looked very much like your Grandmother. I may
still have a picture or two somewhere. Want them? The two brothers, Bill
and Harry, were Bamber's other children. Bill was married to Lurlene
(sp.?) and they had 3 or 4children. I think they lived at Alief. Harry
was married to Virginia and they had two children: Sue(?) and a boy,
maybe. They lived at Refugio for many years until his death. Well, I
dont ever make a long story short, do I? I tend to make it even longer.
I am waiting for Scott and Carolyn to come in. They are going to spend
the night, go to Rennaisance tomorrow, spend tomorrow night here, and go
home Sun. Will be really good to see them.Hey it's good to hear from
you. Love you so much. More later. Your Mom, Nore.[JHB-Boyds.ftw]
