Ensign Jare d SPENCER, son of Gerrard or Jerrard SPENCER, was born in Stotfold, England, an d baptized April 28, 1614. He came to New England in 1632 and was made a freem an of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, March 9, 1637. In 1634 he was living in Ca mbridge, Massachusetts, where he owned land on the south side of the river. He moved to Lynn where on March 13, 1638, he was granted the ferry for two years at a general court in Boston. On December 25, 1683, he was a juryman from Lynn at a county court. He was appointed administrator of his brother Michael's es tate in 1653. In June, 1656, he was chosen ensign of the train band. In 1659, he was grand juror. In 1660 he was living in Connecticut, as Simon LOBDELL su ed him and his daughter Hannah in that year for damages because she refused to marry LOBDELL. He very likely lived in Hartford for a short time, and in 1662 he and his son John were among the twenty-eight purchasers of the town of Hadda m, Connecticut. Two of his sons received home lots in the division of 1671. H e was the wealthiest man of the town, according to the records.
In 1672, he wa s admitted a freeman of Connecticut and was ensign of the militia. He was repr esentative to the general court in 1674-75-78-79-80-81. He died in 1685. His will was dated September 17, 1683 and proved in 1685.

[p 232] The Magistrate s and Jury in Simon Lobdels case doe returne this as a special Verdict. That y e find not any possitiue engagemt broken by her respecting coniugal relation or absolutely binding her to consummate such a relation: Neuertheles we find vpo n Evidenc that Simon hath susteined much damadge by their occasion And therfor e doe find it iust and meet that all expences that he hath bin at in referenc t o these proceedings ec Jared shal repay to the said Simon and to returne any Go ods or money receaued by Jared or any of his family from ye said Simon. And fu ther that the said Simon shal haue paid vnto him as recompense for his damadge Ten pounds wthin ye space of six months.
