Quoting from the Confluence Centennial Souvenir Bo ok, " by 1772 he had 21 acres of cleared land, which was above average. He did not have his land surveyed or patented until 1786. It contained about 250 acres , and is called "Good Fane" in the Patent. In 1798, he sold the land to Captain William Tissue."

At the bu rial of Ann Spencer, widow, it was said of her :the good hospitality keeper, an d she did give to the township of Edworth 2 of her best beasts to be left to 2 pore foies in town for 3 shillings, a cow, and the poor and Churchwarders to ha ve the taking of them and the distributing of the money to the poore and to see the stock maintained each of them to have 4 pence of the 6 shillings for there paynes to see they truly done according to her last will." The will was dated 13 Jun 1560 and proved 24 Apr 1651. Calls her widow in Edworth, beds. and nam es son Gerard age 17, son Michael to have the chest that was his brother John's . John Spencer, son of Michael's child to have 20 lbs., Elizabeth lymer to have 4 lbs at marriage. Alice Aystin to have a calf, servants to have some, for th e mending of the "London Brygg Waye" 10 shillings. Brother Edward's children t o have l lb., he borrowed from her and the barley he gave her sons to his child ren. Nicholas Merryil and John Meryll, his brother to have the barley their fa ther gave her sons and the poor of Edworth to have the gift already mentioned. Michael Spencer was a witness. So from this seems of yoeman class, better off than average. The above two Merrylls indicates that she was probably a Merril l.
Gerard's will was dated 8 Jul 1570, probated 20 May 1577. Calls him of Bid dleswade, Yoeman and names son Richard under 21 to have 60 lbs, dau. Agnes and Johan Spencer under age and child unborn to have 40 mars apiece at 18 yrs. Wif e Ellen, god-daughter, Johan Spencer my brother's dau. to have 1 lb; brother Mi chael Spencer to have 5 marks. J ohn Spencer, of Haddam, died in 1682. Children, Gerrard, Rebecca, Benjamin, Lyd ia and Grace. The two eldest children he placed in the care of his sister Hanna h, who had married Daniel Brainerd, and allowed Mr. Brainerd the use of the two children's interest in his estate. His son, Benjamin, he placed in the charge of Nicholas Noyes, of Haddam, until he became of age, with the liberty to take the use of Benjamin's share. Lydia he gave to his father Howard, and gave her t he old cow and &1;7 more than her portion, because she had a defective hand. Hi s youngest daughter, Grace, he placed in the care of his brother in law, Kinne, and his sister Rebecca. He left for them to use as a compensation for keeping her, her share, and gave Grace a cow and &1;5 more than her portion of his esta te. The deceased John had taken Tho's Brooks at the age of four years, who had now become 18 years of age, a son of his sister Brooks. This adopted son he dir ected to respect his mother, (who had married Thomas Shailer,) and gave him his time until 21 years of age; he also gave him his loom and tacklin for it, and two steers, and directed him to be clothed as well as his own children. He gave the remainder of his property equally to all his children, after dividing to e ach son Ð30, and each daughter Ð20. He allowed 14 shillings to purchase books f or his children, and gave Goodwife Smith 20 shillings--his sister Shailer and T homas Brooks each 20 shillings, for their kind attention in his sickness. He de sired Nicholas Royes, George Gates, Daniel Brainerd, Daniel Cone and Thomas Spe ncer to be overseers of his will.

Spencer, John, Ha ddam. Died 3 August, 1682. Invt. 267-00-06. Taken 7 August 1682, by George Gate s, Joseph Arnold. The children: Rebeckah 16 years of age, Jarrard 14 years, Ben jamin 11 years, Lydia 10 years, and Grace 6 years. Will nuncupative. He declar ed it as his Will that his Eldest son Jerrard Spencer and his Eldest daughter R ebeckah should be at the disposal of his Brother-in-law Daniel Braynard and his own sister Hannah the Wife of Daniel Braynard. That his son Benjamin should be with Nicholas Noyse of Haddam till 21 years of age. That his Father Howard (hi s father-in-law, Robert Howard) should have his daughter Lydia. That his brothe r-in law John Kennoe & his Sister Rebeckah Kennoe should have his youngest daug hter Grace Spencer. He declared his Will that Thomas Brooks, whom his sister B rooks had committed to his Care when at the age of 4 years and whom he had brou ght up to the age of 18 years, should show all respect to his Mother, now the w ife of Thomas Shaylor; but the two years time which he was to have lived with h is Uncle he now gave to himself; also gave him 20 shillings, and desired his Ov erseers to take Care of him because he was too young to be wholly set free. He gave 30 to each of his sons and 20 to each of his daughters, left money to buy books for them, and desired they all should be well clothed with linen and Woll en. He gave to Good wife Smith, for Kindness and attendance, 20 shillings; also to his sister Shaylor. He desired Nicholas Noyes, George Gates, Daniel Braynar d, Daniel Cone & Thomas Spencer might be Overseers.
