George Stanley, Lord Strange, K.G.
His Lordship married Joan, Baroness Strange of Knockyn, daughter and heir of John, Lord Strange, of Knockyn, Co. heir of the Barony of Mohan, by Jacquetta, his wife, widow of John Plantagenet, Duke of Bedford. He was summoned to Parliament as Lord Strange, in the 22nd of Edward IV (1483). She died 20 March 1513.
His Lordship's younger son, Sir James of Crosshall, Co., Lans., was Marshall of Ireland. He married Anne Hart, widow of Edmund Talbot de Bashall, Co. York, ancestor by him of the Talbots de Bashall, and sister of Sir Perceval Hart, of Lullingston, and the daughter of John Hart, by Elizabeth, his wife, sister and heir of Sir John Peache of Lullingstone Castle, Kent. Sir James and Anne had issue 1. Sir George Stanley of Crosshall, called the Black Knight, Marshal of Ireland, Captain of the Isle of Man. 2. Henry Stanley of Aughton born in 1515.
George's principal act of historical interest was after his narrow escape from King Richards heavy hands and before his death in 1497 was his gallantry at the battle of Stoke, where he was one of the commanders under Henry VII against De La Pole, Earl of Lincoln. On the 8th of April, the first of Henry VII, he was made one of the Lords of the Privy Council. He was made one of the Knights Champions of the most noble Order of the Garter.

His wife, Margaret Clifford, was the only child of Henry Clifford, Earl of Cumberland by his wife Eleanor, daughter and co-heir of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, Mary Dowager, Queen of France, the sister of Henry VIII.

On The 23rd of April 1575, Queen Elizabeth dignified the Earl with the honour of the Garter and so highly did he enjoy the favour of royalty, that her Majesty preferred him in all momentous and critical affairs of state, as one whom she could rely upon as a trusty friend and faithful servant. In the 32nd of Queen Elizabeth he was by special commission constituted Lord High - Stewart of England, and sole Judge for the trial of Philip Earl of Arundel, for Treason. James Stanley, Seventh Earl of Derby was born 31, January, 1606. He married Charlotte de la Tremouille, daughter of Claude de la Tremouille. She became famous for her defense of Lathom House in 1644, when it was besieged by 2000 parliamentarians, and of the Isle of Man in 1651. By this union, James became allied to the houses of Nassau and Bourbon, and to most of the Sovereign Princes of Europe. This Earl was distinguished for his attachment to the royal cause during the civil war, and falling into the parliament's hands after the battle of Worchester, was beheaded for treason on October 15, 1651. He was succeeded by his eldest son Charles, Lord Strange, who became the Eighth Earl of Derby.
His Lordship was summoned to Parliament, by writ from the 7th of March, 1627 to November 1639 as Baron Strange, under an impression that such a Barony was enjoyed by his father; that, however was not the case. The summons amounted to the creation of a new peerage, which eventually devolved upon the ducal house of Atholl.
King Charles 1, appointed Lord Strange a joint Lord Lieutenant of Landcashire and Chester in 1626. Charlotte by her mother was the Granddaughter of William, Prince of Orange. James made a grand tour of Europe in 1625. On the 25th of May, 1644 Prince Rupert and a large Royalist army invaded Landcashire. Earl James joined it victoriously at Bolton and Liverpool. Later in 1644 by the order of the King he went to the Isle of Man to protect England from sea invasion during the Civil War. Prince Rupert remained in command in Landcashire from 1644 to 1651 and James remained on the Isle of Man. In 1650 the Earls daughters were imprisoned in England to put pressure on the Earl. The Earl was defeated in the battle of Wigan Lane the 25th of August and Worchester on the 3rd of September, 1651. He was beheaded at Bolton the 15th of October, 1651.

Sir John Stanley. This, the most distinguished branch of the Stanley family of England, is reckoned as descended from Sir John Stanley, the younger brother of Sir William, of Hooton, of 1397. He married Isabel Lathom, daughter of Sir Thomas Lathom, Knight of Lathom, and Knowsley of Lancashire, and thus acquired those estates. In1385 he was made lord-deputy of Ireland, and had a grant of the manor of Blake Castle in that kingdom. In the seventh year of Henry IV, he obtained a grant in fee of the Isle of Man, with all the isles adjacent, to be holden of the said King, his heirs and successors, by homage and the service of two falcons, payable on the days of their coronation. On the accession of Henry V, he was mad a Knight of the Garter, and lord-lieutenant of Ireland, in which government he died on January 6, 1414.
Isabel was the daughter and heir of Sir thomas Lathom, Knight of Lathom and Knowsley, Co., Lancaster. He descended from Robert Fity Henry, whose son Robert took the name of Lathom from his place of residence and thus acquired those estates.
In 1405 Sir John had a commission in conjunction with Roger Leke to seize on the city of York and its liberties, and also upon the Isle of Man, on the forfeiture of Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland. In 1406 he was Treasurer of the household to King Henry IV, and obtained the license to fortify a house at Liverpool, which he had newly built with embattled walls. In the same year, having taken possession of the Isle of Man, he obtained a grant in fee of the said Isle, Castle and pile anciently called Holm Town, and all the Isles adjacent, as also all the regalities, franchises, etc. John inherited the old Seat of Newton in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Isabel was the daughter of Thomas Lathom whose ancestress again had been Heiress of Thomas de Knowsley.
As a Captain under the command of his relation James, Lord Audley at the battle of Poictiers in France fought the 19th day of September, 1357 by Edward, the Black Prince, son of King Edward III, wherein John, King of France was taken prisoner and brought captive to England. Soon after this memorable victory a truce between England and France was agreed on for two years, during which interval of public action, Mr. Stanley, being a martial genius, and intent to improve himself in the art of war, visited most of the courts in Europe, even as far as Constantinople where he made such advances in the school of war that his superior skill in arms was generally applauded in every country he passed through in so much that the fame thereof gave him the character of the most noted champion in single combat of that age; and on his return through France, the reputation of his bravery so rallied the pride and envy of a haughty French combatant that he followed John Stanley to England and there challenged the whole nation to engage him in arms.
King Richard II commissioned him to Ireland in 1379. He was made Lord Chief Justice of Ireland for six years and in 1395 he was made Constable of the Castle of Roxborrow in Scotland. In 1400 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland by King Henry IV. His brother William of Hooten and Stourton was his deputy in Ireland. He was made a knight of the shire for the county of Lancaster in the second year of the reign of Henry V. After devoting his attention for a short time to the service of his king and country, he turned his attention more immediately to his own little dominion, the Isle of Man to the Lordship of which on the death of his illustrious father, he had also succeeded. His little kingdom at the time appeared to be languishing under the effects of former oppression and called for the fostering hand of its Prince to revive the drooping spirits of the people. In the year 1417 he landed on the Isle of Man and after conferring with the judges and others well versed in the ancient government, assembled the whole body of the people at Tynovald Mount where it had been the custom in older times to prominegate the laws and he held his first court on the 24th of June 1418. Having established order and restored confidence in the people Sir John returned to England, leaving one Thursten his deputy. In 1427 the 5th of Henry VI he was made constable Carnarvin Castle, in Wales, a post of great honour. For the services the King gave him a grant of lands in the counties of Carnervon for life. He was also made a justice of Chester. Sir John is represented as having been a man truly great, of a masterly genius, beloved by his prince, and an honour to his country, a kind husband and a true friend.
In 1406 Sir John obtained a license to fortify a spacious house he was building at Liverpool with embattled walls, called the Tower. The Isle of Man was seized into the Kings hand by his brother Sir William and in the same year Sir John obtained a grant thereof by patent for life, on 6th of April 1407 the King regranted the Isle of Man to Sir John and his heirs forever, with all the royalities and franchises thereto belonging together with the patronage of the bishopric there, under the title of King of Man. In the 10th year of King Henry IVs reign he appointed Sir John constable of Winsor Castle and Knight of the noble order of the Garter and continued him in his royal esteem and favour for the rest of his life.[xx.FTW]
