__________John Stewart born about 1740 in New Jersey, "son of a Scotch nobl e-
man who left his country at the time of the persecution and setled in New
Jersey," =B:134, may have been a son of Henry Stewart, who made a settlement
a t Stewart's Crossing on the Youghiogheny river in southwestern Pennsylvania
in 1753 (at that time claimed as part of Augusta county, Virginia, =D:175.
He wo uld accordingly have been a brother of Capt. Matthew Stewart who, after
Bradoc k's defeat on the Monongahela in 1755, went to Mecklenberg county, NC,
=B165. A tradition with Matthew;s descendants was that "he landed at Phila-
delphia s ome time between 1730 and 1740; he had a brother John who came with
him, Matth ew settling near Charlotte, Mecklenberg county, N. C. while John
went north. T hey first went to Virginia from Pennsylvania." Matthew had a
brother William w ho made a deposition Apr. 20, 1786, in which he referred to
his father and bro thers. There was probably a brother James and a brother
who was father of Henr y, a Virginia soldier who died before 1785, and of
John, who, as heir-at-law o f his brother Henry, was granted by the state of
Virginia 400 acres of land on the waters of Hinkston's fork of Licking river
in Bourbon (now Nicholas or Ha rrison) county, Kentucky.______________________

held the title of Thomas Barbour for 4, 530 ac res of land in Nicholas county,
in which Fowler recovered in ejectment in circ uit court about 55 acres from
from Mary Stewart, widow, and Thomas, Polly and Lucy Stewart, heirs of John
Stewart, show that Stewart's land lay on Steel's r un on "the buffalo road
leading from the Lower Blue Licks to Hinkston's Statio n" and adjoined lands
of Barksdale and Thompson. John Stewart was exempted Nov . 7, 1803, from pay-
ing the county levy in the future. On the same day he was made administrat-
or of the estate of Robert Stewart. He died in January or F ebruary, 1805.
His will, dated Dec. 31, 1804, and witnessed by John Hudelson, Robert
McIntear and Samuel Eslick, was probated Feb. 25, 1805, in the Nicholas
county court. He appointed Jesse Baskett, esq., and William Baker executors.
He gave his wife Mary the household and kitchen furniture, a horse and saddle
and three milch cows. He gave a third of his hole estate each to his child-
r en Thomas, Mary and Lucy, a shilling each to his sons Jesse, Joseph, William
a md John, $20 to his son James, one shilling each to his daughters Elizabeth
an d Lydia, and $75 to his granddaughter Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of Robert
St ewart, deceased. John's bond as administrator of Robert's estate was sign-
ed by William Baker and Nathaniel Kimbrough, and the men appointed to take
the in ventory of Robert's estate were Robert McIntyre, Claiburn Collier and
Martin B aker, sr. It is probable that the three children to whom John willed
his land were by a second wife--Mary Dethenton or Detherton (marriage bond
Nov. 7, 1793 : John Stuart, security). It is evident that some of John's
children did not r eside in Nicholas county. Children:
