She and he second husband (Geoffrey)captured no rmandy and in 1152 the Treaty of Wallingford recognised Henry asStephen's heir . Burke says she was betrothed in her eight year (1119) to Henry. Downloa ded from Bradford_Taylor on rootsweb.comAncestral File Number:<AFN> 9FM0-NL N: 3616 Matilda is the Latin form of Mau d, and the name of the only survivi ng legitimate child of King Henry I. Sh e was born in 1101, generally it is said at Winchester, but recent research indicates that she was actually born at the Royal Palace in Sutton Courten ay (Berkshire). In something of a politic al coup for her father, Matilda wa s betrothed to the German Emperor, Henry V, when she was only eight. They were married on 7th January 1114. She was twel ve and he was thirty-two. Un fortunately there were no children and on the Emp eror's death in 1125, Mat ilda was recalled to her father's court. Matilda's only legitimate brother h ad been killed in the disastrous Wreck of the White Ship in late 1120 and s he was now her father's only hope for the continuation of his dynasty. The barons swore allegiance to the young Princess and promis ed to make her qu een after her father's death. She herself needed heirs thoug h and in April 1127, Matilda found herself obliged to marry Prince Geoffrey o f Anjou and Maine (the future Geoffrey V, Count of those Regions). He was thi rteen, s he twenty-three. It is thought that the two never got on. However, de spite this unhappy situation they had had three sons in four years. Being ab se nt in Anjou at the time of her father's death on 1st December 1135, possibl y due to pregnancy, Matilda was not in much of a position to take up the t hro ne which had been promised her and she quickly lost out to her fast-mov ing co usin, Stephen. With her husband, she attempted to take Normandy. Wit h encoura gement from supporters in England long-standing Civil War from th e powerbase of her half-brother, Robert of Gloucester, in the West Country. After three years of armed struggle, she at last gained the upper hand at the Battle of L incoln, in February 1141, where King Stephen was captured. However, despite b eing declared Queen or "Lady of the English" at Winches ter and winning over S tephen's brother, Henry of Blois, the powerful Bisho p of Winchester, Matilda alienated the citizens of London with her arrogant manner. She failed to secu re her coronation and the Londoners joined a re newed push from Stephen's Quee n and laid siege to the Empress in Wincheste r. She managed to escape to the W est, but while commanding her rearguard, her brother was captured by the enem y. Matilda was obliged to swap Stephen for Robert on 1st November 1141. Thus the King soon reimposed his Royal au thority. In 1148, after the death of her half-brother, Matilda finally ret urned to Normandy, leaving her son, who, in 1154, would become Henry II, t o fight on in England. She died at Rouen on 10 th September 1169 and was bu ried in Fontevrault Abbey, though some of her ent rails may possibly have b een later interred in her father's foundation at Rea ding Abbey. 9fm0-Nl !NAME:large-G675.FTW, large-G675.FTW !NAME:World Family Tree Vol. 5, Ed. 1 , World Family Tree Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Brøderbund Software, INC., Release date: August 22, 1996 !NAME:Mainfile.ged, Mainfile.ged !NAME:Ancestors of Hen ry II (Plantagenet) King of England, Ancestors of Henry II (Plantagenet) King of England, Douglas McMartin, 15 Nov 1995 !NAME:University of Hull Royal Database (England), University of Hull Royal Database (England), Brian Tom psett, Dept of Computer Science, copyright 1994, 1995, 1996 !NAME:!Fix Th is Source-10, Garner, Lorraine Ann Lori, P.O.
