There is a number of spellings of this name, Sueman, Shuman, Suman, Suhman, summan.

In December, 1994 I received a great deal of information from Mrs. Jean Suman of Overland Park, Ks. and the names and dates of this family are primarily from this source. She included about 20 pages copied from a book or paper titled, "Keeping the Lamp of Rememberance Lighted" by Elmer Martin Jackson, Jr. and published Dec. 1985 by Hagerstown Bookbinding & Printing Co.. The following is my summation of this lengthy story about Peter Suman.

May 30, 1730
Peter was born in Schriesheim, Germany. This town is less than 10 miles straight north of Heidelberg. Heidelberg has long been a major university town and there is major ruined castle there. It was not ruined until the French came over. We are told that Peter was a Protestant of the Bretheren faith and his family may have suffered greatly during earlier religious wars.

1749
In this year Peter decided to leave Germany and he goes to Rotterdam where he boards the ship, Dragon, under the leadership of a Captain Spencer. The ship goes to Deale, England ( just below the mouth of the Thames on the Channel). The records indicate that 562 passengers are on board. We can assume that Peter had unusual wealth as he is one of only 6 passengers on board who paid the $35.00 passenger charge. The rest of the passengers came to the USA as indentured people that the captain could auction for their passage fees. The ship arrives in Philadelphia September 26, 1749. It appears that Peter could read and write German.

1750's
The author notes that a Peter Sume is registered as a land owner in Tulpe Hocken, in Heidelburg Township of what is now Lancaster County. In my 1994 map it appears to be a suburb of Philadelphia about 12 miles from the river.

1754
About this time Peter married Eleanor Miller, the daughter of Michael Miller. Miller is described as being from Conocheague Church. The author gives a lengthy description of the problems the German settlers received from the English and particularly the Penn's. He reports that many Germans had their land appropriated and this caused Peter to leave for Virginia. The story is that he and Eleanor reached Frederick County, Maryland and decided to stay. Mrs. Sumans letter states that all of the childred were born in Md. The family eventually settled at Birkittsville, Md. which is about 10 miles west of Frederick and 6 miles north east of the junction of the Potomac and Shennandoah Rivers. Today it is the border of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
Note that in this time the area is considered western Maryland and there were some nasty Indians not very far away to the west.

May 3, 1759
Son, Aaron Suman is born.

1761

The French and Indian War ends and life in western Maryland appears a bit safer.

1766
Son, Jacob Suman is born.
In this year Peter signs a petition in Maryland to replace Peter Bainbridge as magistrate in Upper Middletown Valley.
April 8, 1767
Son, Garrett Suman is born.

November 24, 1767
Son, Peter Suman is born. There certainly is something incorrect in this year. This has Peter born only seven months after his big brother Garrett.

January 9, 1772
Daughter, Eleanor Suman is born.
At sometime in this period Peter is named Constable of Catoctin Hundred by the government which is essentially Great Britain.

1773
Son, John Suman is born.

About 1774
Daughter Anna (Maria?) Suman was born.

July, 1776
Declaration of Independence is completed. This obviously divides the country in to pro-independence and pro-England group that do not trust or like each other.

January 27, 1777
Son, William Suman is born.

1781
Some English and Hessian prisoners are held in the Frederick, Maryland area. We learn that Peter's father-in-law, Michael Miller is a large supporter of the Revolution as he supplies a number of blankets to the army. A plot is uncovered that calls for British troops supported by Indians to come down from Canada and Detroit through Pittsburgh to Frederick. The aim of this invasion is to free the prisoners held by the Americans and then go east to help the British in Virginia. There is a suggestion that Peter is one of several local citizens suspected of being ready to welcome and help the English invaders.

July 25, 1781
On this day Peter and Nicholas Andrews, John George Graves, Yost Plecker, Adam Graves, Henry Shell and Casper Fritchie are convicted of treason and are sentenced under English law for this crime. Many people believe that as a member of the Brethren faith Peter was a pacifist and would not actively support any side at war. Casper Fritchie was probaly related to Barbara Fritchie who lived in Frederick. The judge was Alexander Contee Hanson

The sentence of the judge is as follows........
It has been suggested to the Court that not withstanding your Guilt has been ascertained by an Impartial Jury, you consider the proceedings against you as nothing more than a Mockery, and have adopted the Vain Idea, propagated by the Enemies of Your County that she dare not punish her unnatural Subjects for engaging in the service of Great Britain...
From the strange insensibility you have heretofore discovered, I have been forced to conclude that you are laboring under a Delusion which may prove fatal to your prospects of Future Happiness in the Hereafter.
The crime of which you have been Convicted, upon the clearest and fullest evidence, is of such a Nature that you cannot and must not look for Pardon.
Had it pleased Heaven to permit the Full Execution of your unnatural Designs, the Miseries to be experienced by your devoted Country would have been dreadfuil even in the Contemplation....
The Ends of Public Justice, the Dictates of policy, the feelings of Humanity, all require that you should serve as an awful Example to your Fellow-Subjects; and the Dignity of the State, with everything that can interest the Heart of Man, calls to the Heavens for your just punishment....
If the Consideration of approaching Fate can inspire proper Sentiments, you will pour forth your Thanks to that watchful Providence, which has arrested you at an early stage of Guilt; and you will employ the short time you have to live in endeavoring by sincere Penitence to obtain Pardon from that Almighty Being who is to also sit in Judgement upon you, upon me, upon this faithful jury, and upon all mankind.
I must now perform the painful Task of announcing the terrible Punishment ordained for High Treason.....
You (he then pronounced the names of the convicted) and each and every one of you, attend to your Sentence....
You shall be carried from this place to the Goal of Frederick County, and hence to the gallows of Fredericktown and be hanged thereon. You shall be cut down to the Earth alive, and your Entrails shall be taken out and burnt while you are yet alive; your Head shall be cut off; your Body shall be divided into four Parts, and your Head and Quarters shall be placed where His Excellency - the Govenor - shall appoint for public exhibition..... So God have Mercy upon your Poor Souls.

August 17, 1781
Peter and two others are executed. Their land is appropriated.
Eleanor and some friends had to go around the town of Frederick and pick up the pieces of Peter, if you will. The report says that he was buried at Asherman or Ausherman School. In another part it states that the graves are just off Broad Run Road, just below the Mount Pleasant Church in Burkittsville. In still another place they refer to Pleasnat View Church of the Brethren in Burkittsville.

1796
After much legal action the land taken in 1781 is returned to Eleanor.
