RESEARCH NOTES:
Mary Todd was well educated spending som e of her teen years in a French school
in Lesington, KY. She was witty and a good conversationlist and had a
premonition that she would marry someone that would be President of the United
States. Her sister Mrs. Edwards described he r courtship with Abraham Lincoln
as follows:
"I have often happened in the room where they were sitting, and Mary
invariable led the conversation. Mr. Lincoln would sit at her side and
listen. He scarcly said a word, but gazed on her as if irresistibly drawn
toward her by some superior and unseen power. He was charmed with her wit and fascinated by her quick sagacity. But he could not maintain himself in a
continued conversation with a lady reared as Mary was ."

Mary Todd had many trials in ife and is not remembered well in history. She
and Abraham Lincoln had four children, three of whom died before adulthood.
Little Eddie died when he was four years old, Willie when he was 12 and Tad
when he was 18. It must have been difficult being married to a man with a
very differnt upbringing than her own who traveled in his law practice
eventually taking her to the White House where she was hated by the
Northerners because she had brothers fighting for the confederacy and by the
southerners because of her husband striving to preserve the union. Another
great trial of Mary Todd was the assasination of her husband and the lack of
sympathy for her by the press. ...more... [Ref: Johnson]

From "Todd Family, " by Emily Todd Helm, Kittochtinney Magazine, published by G.O. Seilhamer, Cham bersburg, Pennsylvania, Vol. 1, No. 1 (January 1905), pp. 90-91:
"OWEN TODD, ( born in Providence twp., Montgomery Co., Pa., April 20, 1762 -- died Dec. 6, 18 17), son of David and Hannah (Owen) Todd, was educated in such schools as his t ownship afforded. According to family tradition he left home at the age of sev enteen and took part in the storming of Stony Point, July 15, 1779, under Gen. Anthony Wayne, who was a neighbor and friend of his father. It is said that hi s conspicuous bravery on this occasion drew forth from Wayne the warmest praise , and would have gained him a commission but for his youth. It is probably tha t his presence with the Pennsylvania troops on the Hudson, in 1779, was without the knowledge of his parents, as in 1780-81, he was with his brother-in-law, R oger North, a member of Capt. Alexander Johnston's company of Volunteer Light H orse, of Chester county. In 1794, Owen Todd with his parents and the family of his brother-in-law, Elijah Smith, migrated to Kentucky, wither his three elder brothers, John, Robert and Levi, had gone before the revolution.
Land was bou ght on Cane Run, a branch of the North Fork of Elkhorn Creek, Fayette Co., at a point nine miles from the village of Lexington. Here the parents took up thei r residence and their children and relatives found homes in the vicinity. Like many of the adventurous and better educated young men of that day, who found t heir way to the west, Owen Todd had familiarized himself with the duties of a l and surveyor. For this occupation his education, his physical consitution, and his tastes eminently fitted him. He had brought with him the implements of hi s profession, and his services were soon in requistion by the settlers on the r ich soil of Kentucky, with each of whom his earliest wish was realized only whe n he had secured a home for himself and some friend left behind in the 'old cou ntry,' as they termed the place from which they had migrated. For several year s he was thus employed in private and government surveying, at first in Kentuck y and later on the waters of the Little Miami River in South-western Ohio, wher e a stream known as Todd's Fork of the Little Miami still bears his name. In 1 786, then being a resident of Kentucky, he accoompanied the expedition of Gen. George Rogers Clarke against the Indian towns on the Wabash River, but in what capacity is not known, probably as a private. He was commissioned by Gov. Edmu nd Randolph, of Virginia, to take rank from Sept. 9, 1789. During the years fo llowing he was engaged in frequent expeditions against the Indians. In August, 1791, he commanded a company under Gen. James Wilkinson in the second expediti on against the Indians on the Upper Wabash River, and Aug. 20, 1794, fifteen ye ars after his boyish adventure at Stony Point, he again fought under General Wa yne, commanding a company of Kentuckians in the b Parents: David TODD and Hannah OWENS.

Of these two, Robert Todd was born in Ireland in 169 7, died in Montgomery Co., Pa., in 1775, and was buried in the churchyard of th e Presbyterian Church. From http://www .rootsweb.com/~kyfayett/surveyfound.htm is a story from the Lexington Leader da ted January 16, 1891, identifying the first town survey of Lexington. The surv ey is dated March 24, 1791, and is signed by Robert Todd, S.F.

Affidavit of William Meriwether, January 11, 1833, in behalf of the heirs of Levi Todd and R obert Todd. (See p. 563.) Revolutionary War Records VIRGINIA; SECTION IV:

" William Meriwether stated that he joined Capt. John Rogers' Troop of Light Drag oons, which was raised in Spotsylvania and Culpeper Cos., Va., which was to be sent to the Western Country to join Gen. George Rogers Clark's Regt. John Roger s was comm. Capt. of the Co., and marched to the Ill. Country to join Gen. Clar k's Regt. Shortly after Christmas, 1779 or 1780, the Troop of Dragoons landed a t Fort Pitt, then called by that name, where Pittsburgh now stands. The river Ohio then froze up so that the troops were detained there until the Spring of 1 780. When the ice broke up, the troop went down the river to the Falls of the Ohio, and from there to Fort Jefferson, a few miles below the mouth of the Ohi o on the Mississippi river, where Rogers' Troop of Horse joined for the first t ime Gen. George Rogers Clark's Regt. When the troops got there Clark's Regt. wa s on the ground. The Troop together with Clark's Regt. built the fort, called Fort Jefferson. Sometime before this, that is in the winter of 1779, Clark had taken Vincennes and Kaskaskia, and many other places of the British forts in t he Ill. Country . At Fort Jefferson, or at the Falls of the Ohio, Meriwether s tated that he well recollected that Robert Todd and Levi Todd were there in Cla rk's Regt., and acting commissioned officers in the same. He does not recolle ct their rank, but believed they were bros., and went into the Regt. when it wa s raised and marched from Va. with the Regt. The country around Fort Jefferson was a wilderness for 400 miles distant. He believes that both Levi and Robert Todd completed the entire expedition in taking the several British posts in Ill . In the fall of 1780, Clark's Regt. came from Fort Jefferson to the Falls of the Ohio, while the troop of Rogers, under the command of John Montgomery was taking or destroying other posts of the enemy in the summer of 1780. In the yea r 1781, after the surrender of Lord Cornwallis the regiment of Clark was reduce d and Robert Todd went to Va. and m in 1782, and Levi Todd remained in Ky., and was in the Blue Lick defeat, fought in Aug., 178 Parents: David TODD and Hannah OWENS.
