Asa Homer Witherell was born Brattleburg, Vermont. July 23. 1819. When less than two years old his parents moved to Pennsylvania, and it was in that state that the days of his boyhood was spent. In 1840 he moved to Melrose, Wisconsin, where he engaged in the wagon making business. In 1855 he was united in marriage to Miss Emillia Jane Pierce, of Lake Mills, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.Ten childeren were born to this union. They lived in Melrose over forty years, moving into town in 1897 where he died December 18, 1898, at the age of 79 years.

"The First Methodist Church organized as Bristol West Conference in 1859 changed to melrose circuit Conference in 1860. The building site was obtained and bids let. A.H. Witherell receiving the contract for $1550.00. Extras solicited and the total cost was $2076.67.
An amusing incident was: "The contractor had left the erection of the belfry to others. After it's completion he looked at it from the street, and criticized the workmanship, explaining, when asked, that it was not plumb. The statement nettled those who had done the work, especially at being accused of poor workmanship on such an edifice. They demanded a committe of competant men to be appointed to investigate and report. A three man committee was named to do the task. They went to the belfry armed with a level, square, and a plumbbob to investigate. The investigation was very deliberate and painstaking from every angle and posistion, so much that an impatient crowd on the groung kept calling up to learn the findings. No heed was paid to their appeas, the judges maintaining a dignity appropriate to the seriousness of the complaint. Upon reaching the ground they called for pen and paper to make out a written and sighned report which ineffect was that the charge of Witherell was well founded. 'The belfry leans just one quarter of an inch to the South.' Where upon Witherell remarked, 'You can't fool my eyes,' and that expression was in common use for some time after that." The church was dedicated in 1868.
