My Dad's cousin, Beverly Palmer, wrote to me in the 1970's that their grandfather, Moses Boyd, was only 13 years old when he served in the military and was a drummer boy during the Civil War. This is actually consistent with what I have found so far. The birth date on the 1900 census for Swisher County, TX would have made him about that age. Although I have not yet found him on the Roster Rolls for Georgia, he must have served there. At least the State of Texas believed he did as they awarded his widow, Milly a Confederate Widow's Pension based on the facts to which she and others swore and also based on a confirmation letter from the Federal Government saying they found a record for him where he was released in June of 1864 from the Jackson, VA Hospital. A Volunteer for Co. F, 28th Regiment, GA Infantry, CSA, told me that Moses was most probably wounded in the battle of Petersburg. The affidavit to which his wife, Milly, swore says that he served approximately 24 mos or 2 years. He was very lucky to have survived the Civil War. From research I did on his company and the companies of his two brothers in law, Goodman L. Mitchell and James Madison Mitchell, very few Confederate soldiers survived. In one of the Regiments they started out with 1,600 troops and only 34 survived the war.

When Tom Brown was searching his CD for Moses, I told him that I couldn't believe they would let a 13 yr old in the military and that Moses must have lied about his age. Tom wrote back and said Confederate Soldiers did not lie. He said there were documents cases where boys actually wrote the number 15 on a piece of paper and put it inside their shoe. When they were asked their age, they would say "I am over 15." Age fifteen and above was draft age.

After the war and their marriage they stayed in Forsyth County for at least one year because their first child was born there. The second and third children were born in Whitfield and Walker Counties. From my research of Georgia, things were really bad after the war because Sherman had literally gone through and burned and destroyed everything in sight, stole everything edible, raped and pilfered till he reached the sea, all while there were no able bodied men to be found in Georgia because they were all on the Virginia front fighting. After the war there was a mass exodus of people many of whom no longer had homes to live in. There was no food to eat. All chickens, pigs, cattle had been stolen and eaten by Sherman's Army. Many headed west to Texas. A book I read said it was very common for a family to pack up and head out leaving a sign on the door, "Gone to Texas". For a few years after the war Moses and Millie lived in the northwestern corner of Georgia in Whitfield and Walker Counties. Some, maybe all, of Millie's sibling were living in Walker County also. For some unknown reason some of the Mitchells along with the mother, Jane, moved to Missouri while others moved to Texas. The youngest Mitchell stayed in Georgia.

Moses and Milly Boyd moved to Texas along with one of Millie's brothers and one of her sisters Alwilda and their families. Also moving to Texas with them were some of Millie's cousins on her mother's Wallace side of the family. It is possible they went through Alabama as there were Mitchell and Wallace relatives living there. Tandy, their fourth child, was the first of their Boyd Clan to be born in Texas. He was born in the East Texas piney woods of Smith County.

The exact root from Georgia to Texas is unknown at this time. The approximate distance between Georgia and Texas is about 1000 miles so it was no easy trip for a young couple with three children.

The Boyds kept moving west as the next child was born in Navarro County, Texas. Then they moved on to Johnson County, Texas where the rest of their children were born. They are listed in the Johnson County, Texas census as living in the Alvarado District. This county is located right south of Dallas-Ft Worth. Some time in the late 1800's they moved on to the Texas panhandle and settled at Tulia in Swisher County. In the 1900 census of Swisher County, Jesse (Uncle Russ) (Doc, to me) was the oldest child listed still at home. The older ones must have married by this time. The 1900 census had a column to indicate where each person was born, and where each of the parents of that person were born. It shows that Moses and both parents were born in South Carolina.

Boyd is a Scottish name. All Boyds originated in Scotland. At one time the Boyd's were rulers of Scotland. However, they fell out of the good graces of one of the English kings and some of them left Scotland and fled to Northern Ireland and settled there. The Scots who immigrated to America from Northern Ireland are commonly referred to as of Scotch/Irish descent when in fact they were Scots who lived in Ireland. The majority of them immigrated in the early 1700's mostly to Pennsylvania. As time went on and more land was needed, the Scotts were the first to move on. They were fierce warriors and not afraid of anything. The books say the scots were always on the forefront of the frontier as it moved west. They began migrating down the Appalachian mountain chain through Virgina, North and South Carolina and Georgia.

This is most probably where our Boyds came from. However, I have a very long way to go to get there. There were so many Boyds in South Carolina and Georgia in the 1800's. There are many books about Boyd families there. Most of them were privately published and no longer in print. I belong to the House of Boyd Society on the internet. All Boyds pool their genealogical information and help each other. Eventually, I will find a break through. Right now I am at a stalemate on Moses.

According to pension records, ST of TX, which I found on the internet and ordered copies, Moses served in Co. "F", 28th Regiment Georgia Infantry, Confederate States of America. His widow applied for a Confederate Pension in 1922 with St. of TX.

At internet address: http://extlab.1.entnem.ufl.edu/olustee/28th_GA_inf.html is a page on Twenty-eighth Georgia Infantry.

Originally known as the Twentieth Regiment, what became the Twenty-eighth Georgia Infantry was mustered into service at Camp Stephens, near Griffin in September 1861. Colonel T. J. Worthen originally commanded the regiment, which contained men from Cherokee, Emanuel, Jefferson, Merriwether, Richmond and Washington counties. By November the regiment had reached Richmond and it was subsequently ordered to Manassas Junction. There it suffered many losses due to disease in the winter of 1861-1862.

The regiment defended Yorktown and was present at Williamsburg, but its first major battle was at Seven Pines, where it lost nearly 150 men. It then took part in the Seven Days Battles, losing its colonel at Malvern Hill. Missing the battle of Second Manassas, the Twenty-eighth fought at South Mountain and Antietam, held a supporting position at Fredericksburg, VA and was engaged at Chancellorsville.

By August 1863, The Georgians were in Charleston, and helped garrison Forts Wagner and Gregg on Morris Island and later Fort Johnson and Fort Sumter. In February 1864 the Twenty-eighth fought at Olustee under the command of Captains William Crawford and James Banning. During the battle Captain James Rowe of Company "E" planted the colors of the regiment over two Napoleon guns captured from the enemy. The Twenty-eighth lost ninety-five men in the battle.

In the spring of 1864 the regiment returned to the Charleston defenses with the rest of Colquitt's Brigade. When the brigade was ordered to Virginia the Twenty-eighth remained in Charleston on provost duty for several days. When it reached Virginia it was temporarily assigned to Martin's Brigade, although it shortly thereafter rejoined Colquitt's command. The regiment then fought at Cold Harbor and Petersburg before being assigned to North Carolina, where it surrendered in 1865.

Confederate Soldiers from Cherokee County, GA

Company "F", 28th Regiment - Infantry

Other: Georgia Volunteer Infantry
also known as the "Cherokee Georgia Mountaineers"

This company was originally formed as Co. M, 18th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. It was formed in part by Captain Jesse Burtz's Independent Company of Georgia Infantry, November 13, 1861. It had on its original roll probably 175 men. It was composed of men from four counties: Cherokee, Pickens, Forsyth, and Dawson. Before being mustered into service at Richmond, Virginia, being too large for one company, it was divided, retaining in the original company under Capt. Burtz, the men from Cherokee and Pickens Counties, while men from Forsyth and Dawson Counties were formed in a new company. - From the records of the Georgia Soldiers Roster Commission.

New information has come from Cousin Todd Boyd in Washington that says Moses Boyd's mother was "Hannah", father unknown. Therefore the parents I have linked with him-David Boyd and ELizabeth Turrentine are probably not correct.
