Branches: Boyd of Merton, Boyd of Penkill, Boyd of Pitcon, Boyd of Trochrig •Arms: Quarterly, 1st, Azure, a fess chequy Argent and Gules (boyd); 2nd, Argent three inescutcheons Gules (Hay); 3rd, Argent, three gillyflowers Gules, within a double tressure flory counterflory Vert (Livingston); 4th, Sable, a bend between six billets Or (Callender). •Badge: A dexter hand erect in pale having the two outer fingers bowed inwards. •Tartan: Boyd •Mottos: Confido (Be Trustful); Merton: Confidas (May you be trustful)

The name is said to derive from "Buidhe", the Gaelic for "fair" or "yellow". The name Boyd is also believed to derive from Boid, the genitive of Bod, which is the Gaelic name for Bute, the second largest island in the Firth of Clyde. A Robert de Boyte is listed in the Ragman Rolls, rendering homage to King Edward I of England in 1296. Duncan Boyd was executed in 1302 for supporting Scottish independence. Sir Robert Boyd was a supporter of the Bruce and was a commander during the Battle of Bannockburn. He was rewarded with lands in Ayrshire confiscated from the Balliols; Kilmarnock, Bondington and others.

King James II raised the Boyds to the peerage under the title Lord Boyd of Kilmarnock. Lord Boyd was appointed one of the Regents to King James III on the death of James II. The Boyd influence on the young King was substantial and he was appointed Great Chamberlain and his son was wed to Princess Mary, sister of James III, and given the title Earl of Arran.

It should not be surprising that a family with such great influence would also make powerful enemies. Those enemies succeeded in gaining the King's ear and eventually persuaded him that the Boyds were a threat. In 1469, Lord Boyd the Earl of Arran and Alexander Boyd (brother to Lord Boyd) were called to appear before Parliament. Lord Boyd saw what was coming and fled to England, the Earl of Arran was out of the country and when hearing of the problems decided not to return. Alexander Boyd, who was too ill to flee, was brought before Parliament and executed for treason. The King called his sister back to Scotland, on pretense of possibly forgiving her husband. He promptly had her confined and had her marriage annuled.

The family honour was restored by Mary, Queen of Scots. After the Mary's escape from Loch Leven castle, Lord Boyd was one of the first to join with her at Hamilton. The family fought on the side of the King during the civil war and was rewarded on the Restoration with the title Earl of Kilmarnick in 1661.

The 3rd Earl fought on the government side, leading Ayrshire volunteers during the 1715 rebellion. The 4th Earl did not agree with his father's politics and fought for Bonnie Prince Charlie as a general at Culloden. He was captured and beheaded on Tower Hill in 1746. All Boyd lands were declared forfeit and the the eldest son of the 4th Earl succeeded to the Earldom of Erroll through his mother.

In the 17th century, a number of Boyds and other Scots crossed the channel to Ireland and took up lands in Ulster. So Northern Ireland is the ancestral home of the people sometimes known as Scotch-Irish, but more correctly called Ulster-Scots. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of Ulstermen made their way to the American Colonies and to the United States, and today there are estimated to be more than twenty million Americans whose ancestry goes back to Ulster.

Dean Castle, and the extensive Country Park which surrounds it, lie towards the north of Kilmarnock.

The earliest part of the fortress is the square Keep, built around 1350 by the Boyd family. In 1316, the Boyds had been given the estate of Kilmarnock by Robert I (the Bruce) as a reward for their support for him during the War of Independence and at the Battle of Bannockburn against Edward II in 1314.

The Place, or Palace, was added about 1468 when the influence of the Boyd family was at its strongest. It was built as Lord Boyd's private apartments and was designed for comfort, although defence was not entirely forgotten. In 1735 the Place was seriously damaged by fire and lay in ruins for the next 200 years. In 1749 the Boyd family sold the castle and the estate. Since then there have been many owners, including the Earl of Glencairn, friend and patron of the poet Robert Burns.

When the 8th Lord Howard de Walden inherited the castle he began its restoration. He completed the keep in 1908 and began the important collection of arms, armour and tapestries. The musical instrument collection also displayed here was collected by the 8th Lord's father-in-law. Restoration was completed in 1946, and in 1975 the castle, collections and estate were gifted to Kilmarnock by the 9th Lord Howard de Walden. Parents: John Thomas BOYD and Janet CRAIG.

Robert Boyd II
Robert II (c. 1730-Sept. 8, 1793) participated in the French and Indian War as a captain with his own company. The Officers and Soldiers, Province of Pennsylvania contains five references to Capt. Robert Boyd, including his service in the garrison at Ft. Augusta. This Capt. Boyd commanded troops that
included his brother-in-law, John Sharp.

Before leaving Pennsylvania for Rowan/Iredell Co., NC, Robert II married Anne (Clark?) and began their family, including Catharine, who was born around 1761 in Pennsylvania. Besides his joint holdings with his siblings, Robert and Anne also owned a tract in Sadsbury Township that they released to John
Boggs of Will Town Township on Oct. 22, 1762. Robert II and Anne remained in Iredell until after the Revolution before heading west, leaving Catharine behind with her new husband Alexander McConnell. The family moved first to Lincoln Co., KY, where daughter Sarah was married, and then just north of Nashville to what is now Madison, TN. Robert also owned land in Sumner Co., TN, just east of Nashville. Robert and Anne belonged to the Spring Hill Church, and descendant Howard V. Jones of Cedar Rapids, Iowa believes Robert was buried in the church cemetery, as instructed in his will, after he died in 1793.
Among the children: John, William, Mary, Sarah, Lettice, Frances.

In the 1840s, the Edmundson sons - Robert Boyd and Thomas - moved to Greene County, MO, just east of Springfield and northeast of the McConnell settlement. Although Robert B. Edmondson's family moved on after his death, Thomas' children farmed and received considerable education for the day. Through marriage, their cousins included Samuel, Flavius and Sam Freeman, prominent lawyers and businessmen of modern Springfield in the 20th century. Parents: John BOYD and LETTICE.

Spouse: Ann CLARK. Robert BOYD and Ann CLARK were married WFT Est 1746-1775.3,883 Reference Number:15626 Children were: Mary BOYD, Lettice BOYD, John BOYD, Sarah BOYD, Catherine BOYD, Frances BOYD, William G. BOYD.
