The story goes of this Robert Boyd that came from Ireland was
taking his wife and children to Kentucky on the Mississippi River, when he
and his wife took sick and died from Yellow Fever near St. Louis, Missouri
in a little town called Natchee. The six children were farmed out to
families in the area.
When I did research on the Boyd Mound, I discovered it was an
archaeological dig of Indian graves. Natchee's cemetery listing did not list
Robert and his wife, but it did say there were headstones that could not be
read. Also, the kids probably had no money to buy a headstone.
Robert's son Robert was farmed out to a slave owner who treated
him like a servant and called him poor white trash. His job was to take the
food to the black slaves and everything else a boy of twelve could do. When
a load of slaves were to be sold, they were taken down the river on a river
boat and Robert went along to feed the slaves. When they were able to go
back to the plantation, Robert hid in the engine room and fought off the
crew with the meat cleaver he used to cut the meat for the slaves. He
finally got free and went to live with the Chippewa Indians (Ojibwa).
He later started a trading post, worked as a raftman on the
Mississippi River, and in a sawmill. Parents: William BOYD and Sarah JOHNSON.

Dear Son Joseph
I received yours of the 20th & 25th of June which came b y the politeness of Mr. J. Baird. It was very pleasant thi ng for me & all of us to hear from you all It was the firs t letter that I have known you to write to anyone here sin ce you left. I often wondered why you did not write to so me of your numerous friends here before this time but I se e by your letter the reason why you don't write more lette rs to your friends, which is the veary reson I had been tel ling our people, that you was engaged at your business s o much that you could not take time to write to any of you r friends except on business you could not well put off. F or my part, since I have moved up here, I have not wrote b ut few letters to what I used to do - for this last few we eks my head has not been in very good condition to write m uch from the fact it has been so light. I found it somewha t confused my mind to write or read much. It is a conside rable change in this respect from my former feelings. An d indeed I have had considerable fears that I would hav e a stroke of palsey. I attribute it somewhat to the stat e of my body, by being so constipated in my bowels. I wen t to the water Doctor
at Doctor Bailz old stand & I took a lesson from him whic h has been the means in the
Providence of God in helping me along very considerably. S o much so I went last week in the Buggie with our new nei ghbor Mr. Davis, to Connellsville to an adjourned Presbyte ry of our church & was two nights out. One at John Work s & one at Davis Woodwards & I went all that round & I cam e home very tired but had no bad spell of Phthisick & I ha d a tollerable apetite generally. The people tells me I l ook
better than I have for some time. The rest of our friend s is generally well, except
my dear daughter Nancy Antram. She is very low indeed & w e all have given up any hope of her recovery. She had bee n very low for some time. Her Desolution has been looke d for by all who no her as enivitably certain by all huma n appearance for three weeks and upwards but God is still s paring her life no doubt for some wise purpose. She suffer ed great from a nervis affelection of the head so much it h urts her to have any company to be where she is save her pe ople. She appears to be very glad to see me at all times b ut she tells me the reason why she don't feel easy in he r mind when she is in the presence of strangers that she wa nts to do something to make them comfortable while they ar e at her house & she is so weak she can't as much as to sp eak to them without feeling worse. In short I never sa w a person held anything like her. The people that has s een her for sometime past, is looking for to hear of her De ath Every hour. Although in this low state she generally o rders all the affairs of her house and I was to see her lat e last Evening. I happened to mention in her hearing tha t I got a letter from you. She asked me If I was soon goi ng to write to you. I told her I was a going to write tod ay. She then spoke in a tollerable audible voice & wishe d to be remembered to you in affectionate manner as I eve r seen in my life & particularly to your Dear son William . She told me of a very affecting scene that took plac e between her and him when he was about to bid her that las t farewell on this Earth. He said Aunt, farewell. She say s she will never forget the parting with that dear Boy & t hen again she said, don't forget to remember me to al l the Dear children & to Elvira & [the] McMillans and al l the rest, repeating it again. I tell you my dear friend s the whole scene was atrying and interesting one to me an d all present, so much so I can't help but weep all the tim e I am trying to write these few lines on this part of my l etter. O My Dear son, Pray for your Dear Sister who Sincer ely, I have no doubt, but wishes to Die with a sincere goo d feeling toward all men. She is perfectly resigned to he r fate. O, My Dear Friends, this gives me great consolatio n to see my Dear Children Dieing in this happy state of sat isfaction of mine. May God grant we may all be in this sta te of mind that my poor Daughter is when we come to die . I have to stop here for awhile untill I get my mind com posed so I can write the balance which I intended to writ e you when I sat down to write. CATHARINE BALLANTYNE / ROBERT BOYD - MONROE CO; W.VA
Andrew BALLANTYNE and his wife, Agnes SMART, and their four children
came from Dundee, Scotland, to Norfolk in 1801, and thence to the Sinks
of Monroe. Their friends, Andrew Miller, May Broady, and others, came by
the same ship and others had preceded them. Ballantyne was a skilled
weaver. And like a true Scotchman of his time he was a great reader and
student, Especially of the Bible. For many years he taught in an old
schoolhouse that stood close to his home near Hillsdale. He and Andrew
and James Miller would regularly walk to one another's homes on Sunday,
a circuit of 10 miles, for the purpose of religious worship. They were
elders of the first session after the Lebanon brick church was
completed. The three daughters were as fond of reading as their parent
In order that a borrowed book might be promptly returned, they would
read at night what their father had read by day. Their books, heavy both
in binding and subject matter, are still in possession of their
descendants. They also delighted in feats of memory. One of these was
committing the 119th psalm, the Shorter and Longer Catechisms, and much
