Samuel McClurkin Boyd was born on 21 June 1790 in Scotland. Immigrated to Virginia, then to Laurens District, SC. 1850 Census would indicate he was born in 1785. He died in 1861 in Laurens co., SC. Estate administered 10 Jan., 1862. He was buried in 1861 in Laurens Co., SC He resided in Boyd's Mill, Laurens Co., SC. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist church. He was a Miller in Boyd's Mill, Laurens Co., SC

He was married to Nancy Henry (daughter of John Henry and Jemina Pinson) about 1812. 1850 census: Elizabeth Martin was living in Samuel's home, as were Isabella and her husband Joseph Waldrop. In the 1860 census, Samuel was living next door to Bradford and Sanford Boyd.

Notes from Diary of Della Boyd Culbertson - Samuel Boyd

Samuel and Nancy bought land on Reedy River eleven (11) miles west of the Court House in Laurens County, SC. He had splendid water power there and built a mill, grinding corn and wheat.
The Boyd home was on the east side of Reedy River about one fourth of a mile from the mill. Here they reared a family of eight children, five boys and three girls. he also had a cabinet shop for making furniture. He invented a clock with all the inside fixtures, wheels, pegs were made of wood.

All of his boys except one followed the same trade. he handed down his profession as miller and wood workman to at least four more generations, sons, grandsons, great and great-great grandsons. One of his grandsons, Stewart Boyd, son of Sanford, invented a number of things.
Samuel seemed to have been rather odd or peculiar in some ways, but was kind father and husband, and a good neighbor, except for one thing he was a drunkard. We all have some bad traits---that was his. His wife was a great woman.
After he was left alone, he sold his business to his sons, David, Bradford and Sanford, and a son in law, John Puckett. He lived alone in a house joining the yard of the Sawyer's house (a Grandson) at Boyd's Mill, and was cared for by his family. He preferred to live that way.
His son Sanford bought his home and rebuilt the house and lived there all of his life except for a few years. He reared a family of nine children there.
Samuel's sons did a big business at Boyd's Mill. They built a two and a half grist mill, and did a tremendous business. They had a saw mill, furniture factory, and carding and spinning plant, in a small way, they ran thirty spindles. They made all sorts of furniture. David's three sons, Nathan, Bradford and John all worked there. They had a large machine, turned by hand, to card rolls for spinning.
In 1845, "the dry year", as we were taught to call it, nearly all the mills in the whole country could grind scarcely any at all because of scarcity of water. When the water in old Reedy was low, they found a spring just below the dam. They prepared a race and ran all the water on the mill wheel. They ground corn and wheat day and night, and a few Sundays. Men came from miles to get grinding done. Sometimes they would have to wait for days to get their grinding, so many would be waiting. Sanford was the miller at that time, but the others helped with it.
Samuel Boyd and children were all members of Poplar Springs Baptist Church - many of them buried there. Robert, the youngest son of Samuel and Nancy Henry Boyd, was buried in the family cemetery in front of his home. The son of Isabell Waldrop was buried there. Samuel has no marked grave there. "he must have been buried in the family cemetery."
From the minutes of the Poplar Springs Church - "Brother Samuel was excluded from the church several times for the sin of drunkenness. He would be received back into the church by recantation and then several months later would be up before the church again."

Nancy Henry was born in 1790 in Ireland. based on Census. She died in 1850/51 in Laurens co., SC. the estate settlement is in Laurens Co. records. She was a member of the Baptist church. nancy Henry was a sister to john Henry, husband of Jane Boyd. Samuel McClurkin Boyd and Nancy Henry had the following children:

David Boyd
Catherine "Katie" Boyd
Nancy Sarah Boyd
John H. Boyd
J. Bradford Boyd
Sanford Boyd
Elizabeth Boyd
Isabella M. Boyd
William Harrison Boyd
Robert Boyd was born after 1831. He died in Laurens Dist., SC. Died young. "Robert, the
youngest son of Samuel and Nancy Henry Boyd, was buried in the family cemetery in front of his home."

LAURENS ADVERTISER: (Newspaper I assume) July 22, 1937

Cross Hill, July 5*** Partly from written records & partly from information received from older people living at the time, we learned that during two decades, 1850 to 1870, there was a great desire among the people of this county, especially in the Boyd's Mill Ekom section, to go west. The motive was to seek fresher lands, more room and better homes. Alexander Culbertson, s/o "Grand Sire Bobby" of Revolutionary fame, after the death of his first wife, Mahala Sprewell, married Elizabeth Johnson and settled below Boyds Mill near Reedy River, in which home reared nine children, two of whom, John & Mary, died early in life. 3 sons: Butler, Robert & George W. married Polly Lander, Nancy Henderson and Ann Godfrey, respectively and settled in the county. However Robert had a son, Young, who went to GA and Geo.W's son, W.L.went to Alabama. in 1885 and entered the ministry. Mr. & Mrs. Alex Culbertson then with one son and three daughters, moved to GA in 1851 and at a later date to Gadsden, Alabama. Their son, Henry, became a Baptist preacher and two daughters, Mahala and Malinda, married Geo. Weldon and W. A. Shirley. Martha married Squire Baker and moved to TX.

SAMUEL BOYD, s/o. William Boyd who came from Scotland to Va. and then to Laurens Co., more than 100 years ago, married Nancy Henry & settled in this section (Cross Hill) where they reared 8 children:

BRADFORD, a miller on the Saluda River, married Pamela Forgy: JOHN married Betsy Hudgens and farmed near Union Church: HARRISON married Syntha Brooks, and went to AR: SANFORD married Elizabeth Downey & later married Barbara Godfrey Boyd, widow of his nephew Nathan Boyd, killed in the Confederate war: DAVID married Tabiatha Waldrop & farmed at Poplar Springs: Katy married John Puckett: Nancy married Scina Smith: and Isabella married Joe Waldrop and moved to AR.

SANFORD who was a miller at Boyd's Mill, had a son Richard who went to MS. In 1855 all of David's family except two, Nathan (killed in Civil War) & Elizabeth who married Willis Washington, moved to TX.
These included Mr. & Mrs. Boyd, 3 sons, David, Jr., John Henry and Bradford & wife Jane Godfrey and one daughter, Tabie, remaining (Comments: nine of the Boyd offspring and 8 of the Culbertsons went West. Four of the Boyds & two of the Culbertsons married into the Ansel Godfrey family. Two of the Culbertson descent became Baptist preachers. Richard Boyd made coffins for the dead.
(Note: Sanford is buried at Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Laurens County, SC. I do not believe he moved .

HENRY was sheriff of Johnson Co., TX and R. D. a legislator of this county. The descendants of Alexander and Samuel are now scattered over states from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. Parents: William Blanton BOYD Sr. and Catherine MCCLURKIN.
