He was buried Unknown in Sec. 6, Row 3, No. 40, Erick Cemetary, Beckham Co. OK.3,667 He is reference number 2393. He was in Farmer/Rancher.3,667 [boyd-trees.ged] [moses.ftw] Tandy Boyd was born in Smith County, in the piney woods of East Texas. He was the first of Milly and Moses' children to be born on Texas soil. He had three older brothers who were born in Georgia. As the Boyd family moved on west, they settled for a while in Johnson County, Texas which is south of Fort Worth. They were living there in the Alvarado District when the 1880 census was taken. According to the census records and the confederate veterans records, there were other Boyds also living in JOhnson County. However, I haven't been able to link them with this family. As a young man, Tandy worked on some of the big cattle ranches which had sprung up to the west and then up toward the panhandle. According to stories his brother, Uncle Russ (Doc to me), Tandy worked on some cattle drives to Kansas. There was no law in those parts in those days and life was rough and rowdy. There is a picture of him with two other young men who are most probably two of his brothers, possibly cousins. Tandy is holding a rifle. The other two and wearing six guns. The family moved to Swisher County, Texas in the panhandle where Tandy met a beautiful young lady, Eva Elkins, and married her. Tandy's older brother (Uncle Bill) also married an Elkins, Angie the youngest sister of Grandma's(Eva) dad. Eva's father owned lots of land in Swisher County. Most of the land is still in the Elkins family. Tandy and Eva didn't stay there though. They moved around all over Texas and Oklahoma. My dad always said that his dad had the wanderlust and would put in a crop and then decide to move before the crop was ready to harvest. This must have been really hard on Eva and their large family. Dad said that Grandpa Boyd would have had something if he would've stayed put. He used the old idiom "A rolling stone gathers no moss." Grandpa Boyd must have been quite a rounder from stories I heard about him from his brother "Uncle Russ" who lived with us when I was a child. He must have drank and gambled a lot. Also my Uncle J. L. told us that once at Sayre, Grandpa Boyd was driving a team of horses and a wagon around the courthouse and whooping and hollering. The police stopped him and told them they were fining him for disturbing the peace. He reached in his pocket and gave the policeman twice the amount of the fine and said here's double the fine 'cause I'm gonna do it one more time. In his later years the family finally made their last move from Carnegie, Oklahoma and settled in Beckham County, Oklahoma. They lived in the Riverview community. This is where they lived when he died. He was a big tall man with light hair and blue eyes. He died before I was born so I have only seen pictures of him. He always told his children they were Scotch-Irish and Black Dutch. To date I have not figured out what he meant by Black Dutch. The research I have done on the term "Black Dutch" . Sometimes it was used as a reference to people from the Black Forest region of Germany. However, this is most unlikely since all the surnames I have so far are very Scottish-Wallace, Mitchell and Boyd. (After these note were originally written, I did find that his mother's mother, was from Germany.) In my research I have found that "Black Dutch" was most often used as a cover up for Native American blood at a time in history when it was more socially acceptable to be Black Dutch than Indian. Since the Wallaces and Mitchells were living Tennessee and Georgia, the last stronghold of the Cherokee, I have checked the Rolls of the Five Civilized Tribes and also another woman checked all her Native American sources. I have found no evidence of any Native American heritage. This does not prove that it is not there. The only way to "prove" it is to find some of our ancesters or their siblings on the rolls. Many were never on the rolls if they were living among the white population. So at this point my question about the meaning of Black Dutch is still a mystery. According to Mama and Aunt Jewel he was a beautiful baby. He died as infant, probably of crib death syndrome. He was named after both of his grandfathers, Tandy Boyd and Joe Coffey, but his parents always referred to him as "Sonny". He is buried at the Erick Cemetery next to his parents. Their graves are in the same row as Grandpa and Grandma Boyd and Uncle Emery - just down the way a little. Every Decoration Day we went to the cemetery and cleaned all the grass off the graves and put out new flowers. At one time there was a rose bush growing there. It probably died during the 1950's drought. Now the cemetery is perpetual care and everything is covered with grass. Sonny was the second grandchild who was named after the grandfather, Tandy Boyd. Both John Tandy (J.T.) and Sonny died as infants. After his death, Grandpa Boyd said he didn't want any more of the grand babies named after him. Aunt Taney Mae told me this. She said she didn't even think about him saying that until after she had named her second son, Charles. Grandpa Boyd's full name was Tandy Charles Landers Boyd.
