Newspaper Article:
LISCOMB COUPLE IS MARRIED FIFTY YEARS
MR. AND MRS. WILLIAM BOYD WILL CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING CHRISTMAS.
AMONG REAL PIONEERS OF TOWN OF LISCOMB.

Came to County in 1865, & Settle at Liscomb, their first home standing on site now occupied by New Reformed Church -- Mr. Boyd Postmaster of Liscomb in 1866.

Mr. and Mrs. WIlliam Boyd, who are among the real pioneers of Liscomb, will celebrate quietly on Christmas Day, the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd are among the most interesting old people of Liscomb, owning to their long and continuous residence in the same town and, from the fact that their memories are good, & they are ablt to recite many incidents of the olden days.
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd were married december 25, 1960 ib Elk Lick, Somerset county, Pennsylvania by Esquire Jacob Harshbarger, uncle of the birde; who, when given in marriage, was Barbara Engle. Among the guest present at the wedding were Mrs. Jacob Johnson and John Boyd, who now live at Liscomb, & mrs. Henry Bockess of Gundy Center.
Come to Liscomb in Early Days
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd moved on a farm in Elk Lick Township directly after their marriage & lived there five years, or until they came to Iowa. They landed at Liscomb, November 9, 1865 at a time when the prairie country of the northern part of the county was very wild, and accomodations were most meager.
Mr. Boyd went to work to provide a home for himself and his young wife. He bought a log cabin with a clapboard roof and puncheon floor, which had as its outside dimensions 14 x 15 feet. Thru the roof of this primitive habitaion the hardy occupants could look above from their bed and see the stars. The matter of a roof did not disturb their slumber, however, for their sleep was sound after the hard day's endeavor. This house, the couples first home, occupied what is now the site of the new Grace Reformed Church of Liscomb.
Made Postmaste in 1866
In their first little home in Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd spent six happy and busy years. They then bought (of John W. Tripp) forty acres of land lying just north of Liscomb & moved upon it. The mail in those days was brought by stage and the entoire contents of the puch had to be sorted over to secure the small amount destined for the post office. In 1866, Mr. Boyd was made postmaster and at that time the only newspapers having curculation in the settlement were the weeekly Times of Marshalltown and Weekly Iows Register of Des Moines.
House 17 in Small cabin
Altho the living room in their little log cabin was very limited during the first years of the pioneer life, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd did not let that interfere with their spirit of hospitality. When Jefferson Speicher and Family arrived fro Pennsylvania in 1869, the boyd cabin was opened to the newcomers and for two weeks, seventeen persons called it home. Beds were stowed awa by day, and got out for service at nightfall. In a fortnight, however, the Speichers had a house of their own and moved into it.
Knew "Johnny" Green Well
In 1865, Douglas Boyd and wife (parents of William and James Boyd) arrived from the East, and bought the farm now owned by james Boyd. In those days, the Indians were thick in the northern part of the county, and Mr. and Mrs. Boyd remembered well "johnny " Green: Pottawattamie Chief, who was hunting, fishing and trapping along the river and on Mormon Ridge, and who callled at their cabin often.
Now Liscomb Was Named
In 1867 or 1868, Mrs. Boyd does not remember exactly which year, the town of Liscomb was born and received tis name from Mrs. Liscomb of New Yor, on of the promoters of the Iowa Central Railraod or the Central Railroad of Iowa, as it wa then called. Mr. liscomb offered $500 to the first denominatio that would build a church in the village. The Methodist congregation won the prize & the present church bell, hanging in the steeple of the New Grace Reformed Church, was purchased with a part of the money given the Methodists by Mr. Liscomb. It became the property of the reformed Church when the latter denomination bought the old church property from the Methodists.

Have Eighteen Grandchildren
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd are the parents of three children and they have eighteen grandchildren. Another daughter, Naomi, was born to them, but died in infancy. The living children are Mrs. Ida Mast of Grundy County and Elmer & Homer Boyd of Liscomb. Mr. Boyd has two brothers & one sister: James and John Boyd, and Mrs. Jacob Johnson, all of Liscomb. Mr.Boyd is 71 years old and his wife, one year his junior. Both are in very good health for people of their years.

Date of birth from Howard V. Jones and comes from William Boyd's obituary. Willie Erwin Daniel's DAR 103409 lists William Boyd's birth year as 1767 and his death year as 1857.

Howard Vallance Jones writes: One course lists without documentation additional issue: Robert, William, Cornelia and John, but no record has been found of any of them. Census figures indicate the possibility of 2 more sons and 1 more duaghter; if they existed, they undoubtedly died young.

Although William was bequeathed his father's farm north of Nashville, he may never have lived there, and in any case the land was lost soon after Robert's death through defective title.
