William Henry Boyd born at Oshkosh, July 10, 1840 has the distinction of
being the first white male child born in Winnebago County, Wisconsin.
At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union army in Co.
E., 2nd Wisconsin Regiment, April 15, 1861. He was badly wounded at
Gettysburg the first day of the struggle, July 1st, 1863. The wound was
near the hip joint and prevented travel on his part. He lay on the
field for two days without aid, bleeding incessantly. A friend had,
however, carried him to the shade of a tree. Henry, as he was known,
managed to stop the flow of blood by tying his suspenders around his
leg, tightening it with the dry limb of a tree. On the second night a
comrade found him and dragged him to the Court House, where he waited
two days more before his wound could finally receive medical attention.
Fever set in and his case was considered fatal. Finally after seven
months in the hospital he was sent to New York City, and then went to
Harrisburg, PA., to "settle" with the government, and then soon went
home.

His wound required almost daily attention for the fifty remaining years
of his life. He was later elected City Treasurer of Oshkosh. After his
retirement from office he engaged in the flour and feed business, and in
1891 opened a box factory known as Boyd manufacturing Co. About this
time, too, he he started his "City Market" store, and engaged in the
oyster business, relinquishing it to his son, Roy Boyd, in 1909. He was
a member of Oshkosh Lodge No. 120, of Odd Fellows. On June 5, 1876, he
married, at Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, Miss Libbie Bardon of the
place. There were two children: Clyde B. Boyd and Roy Bardon Boyd. He
died April 27, 1913.

West Texas Trail Blazers
by R.C. Crane

W.H. Boyd has been a resident of Nolan County for over 50 years. He iswell preserved, highl y respected and has a large family connection.
(A footnote is added stating-These sketches were written about 1931.Mr. Boyd has sinc e died. vg)

He came to Texas as a very small boy and grew up in Ellis and DallasCounties. In 1881 he cam e to Nolan County and settled on Bitter Creek, buying a section of land from E.F. Henry, one o f the first countycommissioners of Nolan County. He has lived in the same vicinity eversince .

He is a pioneer of West Texas. During the 1880's he drilled wells allover northwest Texas-i n Potter County, before the permanent location ofAmarillo was settled, in Floyd and a numbe r of other Plains countiesbefore they were organized. His has been a life of varied experien ces,but probably his outstanding experience occurred in 1867, when all westand northwest Texa s had only a few hundred people, outside of soldiers atthe military posts, and when wild Indi ans roamed at liberty all over theregion, sometimes committing depredations almost in sight o f the militaryposts. He tells interestingly of going with a trail herd of cattle fromGainesv ille, Texas, to Fort Stanton, New Mexico, under these conditions, with one of the very first h erds to make the trip.
But let him tell the tale:

In the fall of 1867, I became a cowboy to go with a herd of cattle fromthat place to Fort Sta nton, New Mexico. The herd was owned by a man bythe name of Bill Cloud, and the trail boss w as a man by the name of BillBostick.

Cloud had a contract with the United States Government to deliver hisherd of cattle at Fort S tanton, New Mexico, the cattle to be rationed outat that place to the Indians. We left Gaine sville in September, andthere were two wagons in the outfit, and about twenty-four men, allto ld. I was the youngest one in the bunch, and I was not then old enoughto vote. Each Wagon w as drawn by four mules. We left Gainesville with804 head of cattle. You want to remember th is number, 804, so that wecan make comparisons with the number of cattle we had when we got t o theend of the trail. Coming westward, we struck the trail of the oldSouthern Butterfield S tage Line in the vicinity of Jacksboro. It wasplainly marked all the way. All through Jack , Young and StephensCounties, we passed ranches and ranch homes which had been temporarilyaba ndoned by their owners on account of numerous Indian raids throughthat region during the prec eding months. The owners of these homes hadbeen driven away from them.

Forts and camps were supposed then to be occupied by United Statessoldiers, but there were n o soldiers at that time at Fort Belknap, CampCooper, Phantom Hill or at Fort Chadburne, whic h were all on the line ofroad we traveled, and the first soldiers' camp that we came across , wefound at Wilson's Creek in Shackelford County, near where Fort Griffinwas afterwards esta blished.

Bill Cloud had been an old Texas Ranger and came with the herd as far asWilson's Creek, and t hen turned it over to Bill Bostick, the trail boss.At the Wilson Creek camp, the Trail Boss a pplied for soldier protectionfor the herd, and was furnished a sergeant squad, consisting o f thesergeant and six men. These went with the herd from there until wereached the Middle Co ncho, twenty miles above the site of Fort Concho, and there we camped for a week or ten days , waiting for another squad ofsoldiers from Camp Concho to go with us. The first soldier esc ort wascomposed of Irishmen, and they were a good bunch; but out of Concho, wewere furnishe d a corporal and about twenty men who were altogetherdifferent in type and make-up, from th e first squad. The cow outfit didnot think much of this latter bunch, as they consisted of D utchmen,Italians, etc., and we thought that in case of trouble with hostileIndians, the cow o utfit would have to protect the soldiers, rather thanget any protection from them.

The ruins of the old stage stands were then still to be seen all alongthe road every fiftee n to thirty miles. Near the mouth of Dead Man'sCreek, a few miles northeast of the site of A bilene, a younger brother ofBill Cloud and I-both of us mere boys-got after several buffalo , but itwas so late in the evening that the coming on of dark interfered andprevented out get ting our meat. Men who had been sent ahead of the herdto locate a camping place, told us the y had seen two Indians in thevinicity where we were chasing the buffalo; but we never believe d theirstatement, always thinking that they sought to scare us into being morecareful in ou r movements. At that time, the buffalo herds were justbeginning to come into that region fro m their northern grazing grounds.

In Mulberry Canyon, in Taylor County, the ruins of the stage stand showedthat it had been con structed of rock. In other places these had beenbuilt of adobe brick, and at other places, o f poles. The stage roadwhich we were traveling passed right by old Fort Chadburne, whose rui nswere at that time in a fairly good state of preservation, with the roofsstill in good shap e on the old buildings. We followed the oldButterfield Trail to the Horsehead Crossing on th e Pecos River. At thattime John Chisum was moving his cattle from the Concho to New Mexico , andwas locating them in the vicinity of where Roswell, New Mexico, is nowlocated.

When his herd reached the Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos, they turned upthe Pecos toward For t Stanton, and followed the route which had beenfollowed by the Goodnight and Loving herd pre viously crossing the Pecosto the west side near the mouth of Delaware Creek, which ran eastwa rdalong the Texas and New Mexico line and emptied into the Pecos.

When our herd got in about fifty miles of Fort Stanton, we ran out ofsome of our supplies, an d the boss went ahead with one of the wagons, andseveral men, to old Fort Stanton, to get th e supplies we needed. Whenthey reached Fort Stanton, they learned of the incident surroundin gOliver Loving's fight with the Indians and his death.

At that time, all supplies reaching Fort Stanton were being hauled bymule and ox teams by wa y of the Old Santa Fe Trail from Leavenworth,Kansas, and quite naturally, When they reached F ort Stanton they wererather expensive. When we delivered our cattle at Fort Stanton wedelive red 1,160 head, 356 more than we had left Gainesville with. Wenever bought a head or stole o ne, nor did the outfit knowingly pick upany strays. The only explanation of this increase i n the number ofcattle we had, after driving them over six hundred miles is that back inJack a nd Young counties the settlers had been driven away from theirhomes by the Indian raids and t heir cattle were left behind running wildon the old ranges. As our herd passed, these cattl e might, without beingnoticed, have filtered into our trail herd. This was made possible byr eason of the fact that there were then no inspectors on the trail, andno need to clean the he rd from the time we left Gainesville until wereached Fort Stanton, New Mexico.

Our outfit stayed at Fort Stanton that winter, and in February followingthrew in with the Oli ver Loving outfit to return to Texas. At that time,Goodnight was driving his stock cattle t o southern Colorado where he waslocating a ranch.

When Oliver Loving died from injuries received in his fight with theIndians, his friends kne w that his remains would be carried back toTexas for burial, so they had an old-style coffi n built out of one-inchlumber, incased with tin. This coffin was put in a larger box andbetw een the walls of the coffin and the box several inches of beaten-upcharcoal was packed, and t hus, the coffin was completely surrounded byseveral inches of charcoal. This made the contai ning box and all of itscontents large and heavy. In this manner, the remains of Oliver Lovin gwere brought back to his home in Palo Pinto County for burial.

We had no unusual experiences on the return trip, and there was nothingindicated by our manne r of traveling that we were bringing back to Texasfor its last resting place the remains of o ne of the outstandingcattlemen of the period and the region. When we got to Loving's old hom ein Palo Pinto County, the box was so heavy that it took six big strongmen to handle it, an d it was so large that it could not be carriedthrough the doors of the Loving home.

On the return, we saw large number of buffalos, and ate buffalo meat mostof the way back, esp ecially in the open prairie country. In the opencountry in the region where Winters is now l ocated, there were greatherds of them. There is something rather peculiar about the way buff alograze while traveling or migrating. The buffalo does not, like the cow, move his head fro m side to side, or cut a very wide swath, but movesstraight ahead, and eats the grass clean a s he moves forward, eating ashe moves with the herd.

When I came to Nolan County, James Manning was still running his littlestore out on Sweetwate r Creek, about three miles southeast of whereSweetwater is now located. He was Postmaster a t the time, and I got myfirst mail there, though the Postoffice was soon moved to the present site of Sweetwater.

This store was first started in a dug-out, but when I came to thatvicinity, it was being cond ucted in a shack built of cedar poles. Thereis a fence between Sweetwater and where I live , which was built, in part,of some of those poles which were in this old Manning store, the b uildinghaving been torn down, and the poles used in fence construction.

Mulberry Canyon Bears stories of Indians, buffalo and smolderingvolcanos
by BILL WHITAKER
Associate Editor

To hear local historians, Mulberry Canyon has long needed asuccinet, straightforward his torical marker, if only to set the recordstraight.
Come Saturday afternoon, that record will stand tall - thoughperhaps not so tall as th e tales once told about the canyon.
A horseshoe-shaped valley stretching from Taylor into Nolancounties, Mulberry Canyon ha s long evoked an air of mystery, as much forstriking landmarks such as "Blowout Mountain"- - a sleeping volcano, talespinners said --- as for tales of marauding Indians.
The Taylor County Historical Commission hopes to state a few of themore reliable facts w ith the unveiling of a state historical markerduring a 2 p.m. ceremony. The unveiling will b e held in western TaylorCounty, where Farm Roads 126 and 1085 meet.
"One reason we're doing this is because it's part of the early daysettlement of Taylor C ounty," historian Darris Egger said. "Forinstance, the Butterfield Trqail transcendsa it. A nd it also happens tohave been settled by some most interesting people."
"It's just a facinating place."
Fascinating--and also off the beaten track. The center of thecanyon is approximately ni ne miles southwest of Merkel and seven milessouth of Trent. The canyon is 11 miles long eas t and west and six milesnorth and south. It is classified as part of the Edwards Plateau.
Egger is right about the canyon attracting interesting people. Theyrange from the Rev . Moses Norris, a buffalo hunter and circuit rider whostarted the area's famed White Church , to Richard Petree, current chiefappraiser of the Taylor County Central Appraisal District a nd a Methodistpaster with ties in the canyon.
Petree, now pastor of Nolan United Methodist Church, will be inattendance at Saturday' s ceremony. If Norris is there, it will be onlyin spirit.
Late in the last century, ranchers and cowboys routinely talkedabout savage Indians favo ring the canyon- mostly so that others wouldforget about settling the region. Nevertheless , several smallcommunities developed in the area.
Buffalo hunters frequented the region in the 1870s and settlersbegan to occupy the lan d soon afterward. In 1877, a herd of buffaloestimated to 800 head wintered in Mulberry Canyo n and a herd numberingseveral thousand passed through it the spring of 1879.
This is believed to be one of the last major herds of buffalo in theUnited States.
"Mulberry Canyon has undeniable appeal for historians," said AnnWhite, who assembles muc h of the area's past for the Taylor CountyHistorical Commission. "The last two Indian skirmi shes in the countywere fought there, for instance.
"But, really, the appeal comes from the fact the canyon is sodifferent from anything els e in the area," she said. "Imean, themountains are so beautiful and they change with each se ason."
Among those "mountains"- if they can truly be called that- isBlowout Mountain, which som e people still argue is a dormant volcano.White says tests, however, confirm the peak has non e of the rocksassociated with such activity.
The wind and other elements have simply played a trick, creating asinkhole effect that p rompted early settlers to conclude it was apint-sized Vesuvius.
Egger says the new historical marker will not stand alone for long.Taylor County Histori cal Association members plan to have another markerraised alongside it, choronicling the hist ory of Cornelia Fort, the firstwoman pilot killed on active duty during World War II.
The two markers will stand not far from where Fort's aircraft crashed. Parents: John William BOYD and Malvina HENRY.

BIO:William Henry Harrison Boyd was a veteran of the Civil War, and the following statement is copied from "Enrollment of the soldiers, their Widows and Orphans of the late Armies of the United States residing in the State of Indiana for the yea r 1890":
BOYD, WHH, Cpl Co 1, 6th Regiment and 1st Sgt Co K, 148 Regiment
both regiments of the Indiana Volunteers. Male, White; War of
1861-1865. Number of children under 16 - 5. Contacted disease
while in service, chronic diarrhea and weak lungs resulting in
disease of stomach, liver, and heart. William never recovered
from the disease(s) he contracted during the war and died at the
age of 54.
William's marriage to Agnes M. Shields in 1870 may not have been received enthusiastically by her father, W.P. Shields, because of his health. Notice that she received written permission for the marriage, even though she was approximately 24 at th e time. From the records, one concludes that William in fact also "married into money". William Ernest, Charles S., Earl, and the infant daughter are all buried together in the Brush Creek Cemetery of Campbell Township, Jennings
County, Indiana.

Homer Boyd Dead
Well-known resident of Liscomb dies after long Illness

Death at 9 o'clock this morning, at his Liscomb home, claimed William Homer Boyd (59) well -known & lifelong resident of Liscomb. Mr. Boyd's death was due to cancer, with which he had been suffering for two years. For the past three months, he had been confined to his home.
Mr. Boyd, known almost universally among his associates as "Pap," had been active in the affairs of Liscomb for many years. He was born in a one-room log cabin that stood where the Reformed Church parsonage now is situated, a son of the late William and Barbara Boyd: who had come to Iows from Pennsylvania in 1865. In 1872, the Boyd family moved toa farm in the north edge of Liscomb, wher the son, Homer has passed all but the first two years of his life.
Mr. Boyd attended the Liscomb schools and the old Albion Seminary, and as a young man served his apprenticeship as a blacksmith in the shop of Jonas Wiley. Later, he and his brother, Elmer, bought the business & conducted it until 1900, when Mr. Boyd sold his interest to his brother. That same year, Mr. Boyd went into the telephone business and installed the first rural exchange in Liscomb, operating it in connection with a furniture & undertaking business. In company with Lou Smith, Mr. Boyd put the first telephone into Liscomb, Beaman & Conrad, and built the first rural line into Grundy center. Mr. Boyd sold the telephone and furnitre business in 1907.
Mr. Boyd was a member of the old Bethel Band & also the Liscomb Cornet Band: organized in 1908. At one time, he was street commissioner of Liscomb.
In a small acreage tract on the iowa River - a few miles out of Liscomb, Mr. Boyd built (several years ago) a camp that has been a favorite picnicking spot for Liscomb people and those from other parts of the county, as well as a place for the holding of school reunions and other large gatherings.
Surviving Mr. Boyd are a sister, Mrs. Josiah Mast from cedar falls, and a brother Elmer E. Boyd from Liscomb.
Funeral services will be held from Grace Reformed Church at 1:30 Sunday P. M. & burial will follow in the Liscomb cemetery family lot. (article dated 1930)
