I am glad to add some detail to my records, however, According to her
father s Bible, George's mother's name was spelled Rhuanna (Alkire) Halstead.His
father, athough I never found it exactly the same way twice, wasAlabartus
Halstead. I believe "Checkerville" should be Circleville, PickawayCounty,
OH. Rhuanna was one of eight children of Michael & Dorothy "Dolly"(Phebus)
Alkire, who survived to adulthood. Five of them married four Halsteads.The
Halstead and Alkire families settled along the banks of Black Creek from
Pleasantville, to Sandborn, and at Carlisle.
Students of the history of the Restoration Movement, Christian Churches,
will be interested to know the Alkire family were at the Cane Ridge
Revival. Two of Rhuanna's uncles, John, and George, became early ministers, andwith
others, hosted the first conference of Christian ministers among theStone
followers, at their Deer Creek, OH settlement, as early as 1808.
Rhuanna's nephew, Dr. John Halstead played a major role in getting the
Union Christian College located at Merom, IN. Rhuanna's eldest daughter,
Elizabeth Jane Halsted, married Cicero F. Thomas, grandson of Rev. Joseph ThomasJr.
another early minister or the New Testament church. Jr's uncle, Rev.Joseph
Thomas Sr. was an evangelist known far and wide as the "White Pilgrim."He
was (dare I say it?) one of the more "colorful" of the early Restoration
preachers!

Veteran Is Taken By Death
Greene County no longer has a living veteran of the Civil War today,after
the death of George HALSTEAD, 94 years old, at the home of his nephew,
George ROLLISON, in the Plummer community, east of Lyons.
Mr. HALSTEAD passed away Friday after a long illness. His death was
attributed to complications incident to old age.
Mr. HALSTEAD was born on November 20, 1847, at Checkerville, Ohio, andcame
to Linton with his parents Elbert and Ru Ann HALSTEAD, while a smallboy.
He had never married.
Mr. HALSTEAD enlisted at Terre Haute and was assigned to COMPANY E, 43RD
REGIMENT INDIANA INFANTRY, one of the most active regiments of the war
between the states.
