As a Militia Captain in the Revolutionary War, he entered service 1780 and on 1/17/1781 under General Pickens he was severely wounded at the Battle of Cowpens. His hands were severely mutilated in his efforts to protect his head. There were seven wounds: one began at his right eye, cut across his face taking off part of his cheek bone, the fingers of one hand were all cut off except the thumb and a stump of the forefinger, he had five cuts on the head and was pierced with the sword besides. After the battle was over, James, left for dead, was found by his brother, William, and was given water and removed to a neighboring house owned by a Quaker where he stayed until he regained the strength to travel. He was incapacitated from active service in the militia after the episode at Cowpens. SAR records state he died at Cowpens. I wrote e-mail to the SAR asking them to correct that data but months later saw the statement unchanged. The Caldwell family of Spartanburg had a son, James Caldwell, who was killed at Cowpens and I believe this is where the confusion lies.
James later served in the State Legislature but could never be induced to be a candidate for re-election stating he was "unfit for the place". He was Sheriff of Newberry District 1807 - 1812 and an Elder at the Little River/Dominick Presbyterian Church.
There are many variations as to the exact circumstances of the overtaking of the execution of Michael Love, the Tory, but whatever account is the most accurate they all place James Caldwell of Mudlick at the center of the lynching. Michael Love had earned a reputation as a follower of Bloody Bill Cunningham. Mr. Love was said to be the most ruthless follower, hacking bodies after they were dead, piercing the fallen to ensure no survivors of a skirmish. Too many people in and around the "96" area of Newberry District were directly affected by the horrors of the acts of war and wanted revenge. On 11/26/1784 Judge Aedanus Burke started Court proceedings for the trial of Mr. Love and the hearings ending 12/7/1784. The Judge had ruled in Court that the deeds done by Michael Love had been acts of war and were thereby forgiven with the Treaty of Paris.
He ordered Michael Love to pay the costs of Court and be released. Mr. Love swore he was unable to pay the costs and therefore was sentenced for non payment.
Captain Caldwell, with pistol in hand, marched into the Courthouse, taking the prisoner from the Bar, pulling him through the door and throwing him on a horse held by James Atwood Williams. The prisoner was led to a stooping oak tree near a spring and hanged. The judge was so shocked by the action he fled, not pausing until he had reached a friend's house in Springfield.34. Another version says that the townspeople waited until nightfall, when the judge had retired and the prisoner was in jail to seize Michael Love and lynch him, with James Caldwell as the leader of the mob. When Governor Guerand heard of the actions taken he ordered apprehension of all involved. Judge Burke, later being more informed and having time to reflect, wrote an article excusing the rash act. This deed of the Judge ended the enquiry.
James Caldwell carried the scars of war with dignity, yet a first glimpse of his face must have frightened many children. He was fondly referred to as "Uncle Jim" in Cothran/Chiles Notes and was a loving Patriarch of his family.
In 1804 a Joseph Williams bequeathed to James and Elizabeth Caldwell his large family Bible and medical book by Buchanan of Edinborough for the respect and hospitality shown to him by James and Elizabeth since he became a citizen of that State.

Capt. John Calhoun Caldwell, 9/9/1785 - 1/15/1856 80 He received his primary education by a Mr. Pyles of Milton, Laurens Co. and Elisha Hammond @ Mt. Bethel Academy in Newberry. Because of the travel distance between his father's homestead and the schools it is safe to assume these were boarding schools, hence the reason he was not listed in his father's home in the Federal census Records.
John Caldwell and his teacher, Mr. Hammond, traveled to Boston, although when is not mentioned in "Reminiscences". I have read where Mr. Elijah Hammond, son of Senator Hammond, had traveled to Boston to procure books for the Library Society of Newberry 1804-1805.
As a lad John Caldwell also received a merchant's training under Wiley Glover of "96" and Robert Geddes of Charleston. Attending South Carolina College, he was distinguished in December 1806 when he delivered a salutatory address in Latin and English on the advantages of the republican form of government. This was done as a public demonstration of South Carolina College which had been newly formed. He graduated Dec. 1807 with second honors (class of four students) and then read Law under Samuel Farrow Esq. of Newberry where he practiced successfully. He was admitted to the Bar 1809 and in the War of 1812 commanded a troop of Cavalry which usually was mustered at Davenport's on Little River in Newberry. He was elected to State legislature 1812 but had to surrender the seat when he became Cashier at the State Bank of Columbia. When he was thirty years old and already married to Elizabeth Hunter both of his parents died within a month of each other. John petitioned the Court to be a guardian to his siblings, James (a teenager), Patrick (14 years old) and Elizabeth (12 years old). His family lived in Columbia until the death of his first wife a year later, in 1816. His siblings must have lived with him there. After the death of his wife John then moved back to Newberry marrying in Oct. of the same year to Abigail O'Neal, daughter of Quaker Hugh O'Neal and sister to Judge John Belton O'Neal. Besides caring for the two step-children and looking after Patrick and Elizabeth, Abigail became a mother the following year in 1817. Resuming the practice of Law, at various times John was a partner with John Belton O'Neal 1814-1816, Simeon Fair, William Jones.

"The last time I saw John Caldwell he was sitting by his fireside, dressed in a long red flannel dressing gown which he commonly wore, his body sadly bent from the effects of rheumatism and paralysis. But he was bright and cheerful (indeed I never saw him depressed) and one could see in his expressive face, illuminated as it was, by his bright piercing eyes, something of the power by which in former days he could so wonderfully sway the feelings of a multitude".
"He destroyed his fortune and health through intemperance; late in his life he suffered paralysis. He had to
sell most of his property and abandoned his law practice …" 78 He is buried at Rosemont Cemetery,
section B4, row 13, in the O'Neal Family Plot, along with his brother-in-law, John Belton O'Neal.

J.P. Caldwell, Laurens, Passes. One of three surviving Confederate Veterans of the County Succumbs.
John Patrick Caldwell, 93, Confederate War veteran and former superintendent of the Old Soldiers Home at Columbia, died today at the home here of his son, William M. Caldwell. With whom he had lived since 1913. He had been in feeble health for a long period before becoming an invalid more than six years ago, mainly from the infirmities of age. "Uncle Pat" as he had been affectionately known for years was a Laurens Co. native, the son of William Thomas Caldwell and Mary Chandler Caldwell. He was born 1/26/1844 at the old Dillard place, several miles east of Laurens. At the age of one year his parents moved to a new home in the vicinity of Union Baptist church, southwest of Laurens Village. At the age of 17, Patrick Caldwell enlisted for service in the Confederate army with Co. "C", a Laurens command that formed part of the 14th SC Infantry. The Laurens Company commanded by Capt. W. L. Wood departed 8/11/1861 to go to camp for brief training at Columbia. The youth was brought to town by his father the day before the company left and spent the night with his uncle John Garlington. He served throughout the four years struggle with the same company commanded after the first year by Capt. G. Wash Culbertson who had been promoted from first lieutenant upon the retirement of Capt. Wood because of age limit. Private Caldwell was wounded at the Battle of Malvern Hill but was not knocked out of service for long, though he received three slight wounds in action. He was the last survivor of his gallant company and his passing leaves only two Laurens County Civil War Veterans. After the War, Patrick Caldwell was married to Miss Margaret Frances Blackwell, member of a well-known Laurens family. For a long period of years he engaged in farming in the same section in which he had been reared. He had been affiliated with survivors organizations including his own which met in annual reunion at Union (Old Quaker) Church as long as a few from his old command augmented by a handful from other camps were able to hold a rally. He served on registration and pension boards for many years, meantime serving for a time as superintendent of the Confederate Home in Columbia. Mrs. Caldwell died 25 years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mollie Pitts, Laurens and Mrs. Minnie C. Brown, Greenville; three sons, C. C. Caldwell of Greenville, B. Caldwell of Williamsburg Va., and W. M. Caldwell of Laurens; 25 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 2 great - great - grandchildren. He has been a consistent member of the Union Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at Union Baptist Church at 111 a.m. Saturday, conducted by Rev. W.D. Spinx and the Rev. Jodie A. Martin. Internment will be in the family plot in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be J.P.Lamar, Earl Caldwell, Claud Pitts, John Hudgens, Carlos Boyd. The honorary escort will be composed of J.A.Frank, C.A.Power, A.L.Hudgens, Will Power, B.Y.Culbertson, R.B.Young, S.R.Dorrah, J.D.W.Watt, J.W.
