[boyd-trees.ged] [xx.FTW] [test.FTW] [Henpitts.FTW] William joined his brother John's company of Rangers in June or July 1775. On 6/12/1775 he was posted during the Battle on Sullivan's Island on the east end to hold Henry Clinton in check. He was a militia Lieutenant and a daring scout during the Revolutionary War, Captain of the 3rd SC Militia, taken prisoner at Fort McIntosh Ga. in 1777 and taken to St. Augustine, Florida, along with Lieutenant Milton of the Georgia Brigade. In the Alphabetical List of Officers of the Continental Army he was listed as taken prisoner at Fort Howe Ga. on 2/18/1777 and released from prison Nov. 1777. In an article by Sarah M. Taylor, great-great grand daughter to William Caldwell, he was captured at the fall of Fort McIntosh, located on the Santilla River, halfway between Waycross and Jesup, Georgia. O'Neal and Sara Taylor both wrote that he was so pale and thin when he finally reached home that neither his mother nor his betrothed, Elizabeth Williams, recognized him. Sara Taylor included in her version that William was accompanied by and helped to make escape through the efforts of a slave called Cudjo. This may have been a story of fiction. In October 1999, I went to the Historical Society Library in St. Augustine. There was nothing in any file at the library pertaining to William Caldwell. A book "1777 - More invasions and Retreats" found there mentioned on page 86 that Captains Milton and Caldwell were taken from Fort McIntosh to St. Augustine as hostages until exchanges were made between the rebel forces and the Royals. Fort Howe was mentioned as the Fort to which Commander Winn hoped for reinforcements. That help did not arrive in time. According to a letter from Lt. Col. Brown to Governor Tonyn, the fort was surrendered without fight. Nowhere could I find a mention of an escape of William Caldwell. My belief is that in November 1777 the exchanges were completed and Captain Caldwell was released. I was told by the curator of the St. Augustine Library that most prisoner officers were boarded in the town proper in the homes of private citizens. Only those officers who could not afford the lodging charged by the townspeople or those who were considered too dangerous were kept at the fort. A tour through the fort showed the cell area almost impossible to leave (escape) due to multiple drawbridges, gators, and swamp. Perhaps someday some proof of an escape can be found, most likely in the records of the Royal Militia kept in London England. Parents: William CALDWELL and Rebecca PARQUE.
