Holy Roman emperor (840-55), and eldest son of Holy Roman Emperor Louis I, the Pious, and grandson of Charlemagne. Lothair became coruler with his father in 8 17 and was crowned by the pope six years later. He twice conspired with his bro thers in revolts against their father. In 839 Lothair received the eastern part of the empire in addition to Italy, which he had received in 822. After the de ath of Louis I, Lothair attempted to assert his power over his brothers, but he was defeated by them at Fontenoy, France, on June 25, 841. By the Treaty of Ve rdun (843), the title of Holy Roman emperor was guaranteed to Lothair, together with sovereignty over Italy, Burgundy, Alsace, Lorraine, and the Low Countries . After having divided his kingdom among his three sons, Lothair retired to a m onastery. Lothair I be came King of Italy in 818, succeeded his cousin, BernardII.

Lothair I and hi s brothers, Louis and Charles the Bald, sons of LouisI, were joint rulers of th e Kingdom of France from 840 to 843.

Lothair I, son of Ludwig or Louis the P ious, succeeded his father ofEmperor of the Carolingian empire, which included what became ImperialGermany in 840. He ruled as Holy Roman Emperor until 855, and wassucceeded by Ludwig II, who became the first King of Germany.

As a re sult of the Treaty of Verdun, Lothair I became ruler of theFrench province of P rovence. Bounded by dauphine, Comtat, Nice,Languedoc, and the Mediterranean. f rom 843, later ruled by Lothair'sson, Charles in 855.

After three years of f ighting over the Carolingian empire, the sons ofLouis I the Pious, made a treat y at Verdun in 843. Lothair who hadthe title of Holy Roman Emperor, was given Italy, the valley of theRhone; the valleys of the Saone and the Meuse; and the capital citiesof rome and Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen). His brothers divided up th erest.

After the death of their father, Louis I the Pious, Lothar, Louis the German, and Charles the Bald, sons of Louis, fought over theCarolingian empire. Ending in 843 with a treaty signed at Verdun.

Lothair the Holy Roman Emper or lost the battle of Fontanet in 841 tohis brothers, Louis the German and Char les the Bald.

Lothair succeeded as Holy Roman Emperor after his father, Loui s I thePious died in 840. Lothair then began a plan to take over all of thefor mer kingdom of his grandfather, Charlemagne. His brother's Louisthe German and Charles the Bald resisted his efforts.
He twice conspired with his brothers in revolts against hosfather.
