OBITUARY:
Arsula Arbell Carr was one of the eight children born to Hulda Shock and Reuben Carr -- and the last of this large family to be commended into the eternal care of our heavenly Father. She was a native of Mercer county, Ohio, but moved with her family to Colorado and tennessee as family health and economic needs required. In her early twenties she exchanged the voew of marriage with Lewis E. Pifer, also a ntive of Mercer county. They enjoyed several years together beyond the celebration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary before his death twenty-four yers ago. Of them it can be appropriately declared:
O HAPPY HOME, WHERE TWO IN HEART UNITED
IN HOLY FAITH AND BLESSED HOPE ARE ONE,
WHOM DEATH A LITTLE WHILE ALONE DIVIDETH,
AND CANNOT END THE UNION HERE BEGUN!
Three daughters and a son came into the affection of these good parents -- Carrie, Effie, Mable, and John H. Effie and John are among us today as we pay tribute to their mother. But of almost comparable significance is that the early passing of her daughter, Carrie, led Mrs. Pifer to take under her love and care Carrie's four children, Dorothy, Charlotte, Edwin and Ted. So tenderly and generously did she provide for them that they regarded her more as a mother than a grandmother. Effie's and John's children also revered and cherished her in a most extraordinary way. Living almost to the century mark, and reveled in the arrival of each of the 23 great=grandchildrn and 26 great-great-grandchildren. The warmth in the many considerations given Mrs. Pifer across recent years as she made her home, first with Charlotte and then with Effie. All who were able to help kept vigil in these last months, weeks and hours. Could she have spoken to those who lovingly stood by her bed last Friday, she might have uttered lines like these:
THE NIGHTS I WATCHED BESIDE YOUR CRIB,
THE YEARS OF LOVE AND CARE
ARE AMPLY NOW REPAID BECAUSE
I SEE YOU STANDING THERE- -
AN UPRIGHT AND AN HONEST SOUL
ON WHOM GOD'S LOVE HAS SMILED,
AND I CAN SAY WITH HUMBLE PRIDE,
YOU ARE MY CHILD.
Of course, the final ground on which each person stands is his answer to the question: "What choice have I made between self and God?" To this question Mrs. Pifer gave simple and clear reply. She sang her faith - - her children remembring how she busied herself with the many household tasks, but always, singing some cherished hymn. She taught her faith - - it being recalled that when she lived in Roane County with no Methodist Church nearby, she took the responsibility for a Baptist Sunday School class. She nurtured her faith - - reading the sacred Scripture after sundown when the day's work was done. She declared her faith -- in early years acknowledging Christ as her personal Savior and Lord and uniting with the Chrisitan fellowship. (We kow that Church membership traces back to Magnolia Avenue Methodist, Part City Methodist, and since June 13, 1943, Fountain City Methodist Church. It is likely that she held original membership farther back than these records go.) She shared her faith - -
suggested by the fact that she celebrated her 98th birthday by worshipping among her friends, her natal day providentially coinciding with the Lord's day, last August 9th. She radiated her faith - - as our young who sang carols in her home each Christmas Season can attest how eager and grateful she was for their coming. Most of all, she depended on her faith - - saying many times in recent months, "I wasnt to ho home," because heaven was so close and so ral. When she was just a girl she ventured up Pike's Peak in Colorado, taking two days. That exhilarating but somewhat perilous climb was quite symbolic of her life. During her earthly pilgrimage she experienced a mingling of sorrow and joy, of hardship and comfort, of pain and peace. Yet I never heard her speak bitterly or even call to remembrance the griefs and distresses through which she passed. It was as if she accepted all that life thrust upon her as a part of the "steep ascent to heaven." She gained the summit just after nightfall on April 3, 1965. What gladness must have swept over her spirit. At last she had reached the great height of her soul's striving, trusting all the while in God as her sustainer and guide:

David F. Carr, 85, of Syracuse, Indiana, formerly of Willshire, Ohio, died Thursday, January 4, 1990 in his residence. He was born on October 4, 1904, Mercer County, Ohio, a son of Samuel D. and Jessie H. (Smalley) Carr. On March 2, 1925, he married the former Florence M. Dudgon and she survives. Other survivors include a son, Carl E. of Willshire; a daughter, Mrs. Henry (Norma) Schumm of Syracuse; a brother, Robert of Lantana, Florida; two sisters, Mary Merriman of decatur, Indiana and Sarah Eichar of Celina, Ohio; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday in the Ketcham-
Ripley Funeral Home in Rockford, Ohio, with the Rev. Earl Thomas officiating. Burial was in Willshire, Ohio cemetery. A retired farmer, he attended the Syracuse Church of God. Earl Leroy Carr, 70, Rockford, died at 3:30 am. today, December 4, 1975 at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, where he had been a patient since Monday. He was born December 28, 1904, in Blackcreek Township, the son of Willit U. and Margaret Catherine Kettenring Carr. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Hulda) Dietrick, Rte 3 Rockford, and Mrs. Edward (Margaret) Wurster, Rte 4, Celina. Mr. carr was a retired farmer. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1:30 p.m. Friday. Parents: Willit U. CARR and Margaret Catherine KETTENRING.
