King of Paris 511 - 55 8
Son of Clovis I, King of the Franks, Childebert inherited Paris on the dea th of
Clovis in 511. In 531 Childebert went to Spain where his sister was bei ng
mistreated by her husband, King Amalaric of the Visigoths, because of her
Catholic faith. Amalaric was exiled, but Childebert's sister died that year.
Upon returning to his kingdom, he made peace with his brother Theuderic I,
King of Metz. He then conspired with his other living brother, Chlotar I, Ki ng
of Soissons, to kill their three nephews who were being raised by their
mother, Saint Clotilda. At the last minute, as Chlotar was murdering the
chi ldren, Childebert backed off and one of the children was saved. When
Theuderi c died, Chlotar, Childebert and Theudric's son Theudebert, all
fought for the kingdom. Chlotar and Childebert received very small
portions, and Theudebert ascended to the throne. Theudebert and
Childebert then made peace and agreed to attack their rival, Chlotar.
Natural disasters prevented an attack, however , so the two kings were
forced to move on to other things. Childebert decided to turn his
attention to Spain, where he took much land in the Pyrenees. Chi ldebert
died in 558 and his kingdom passed to Chlotar, now King of all the Fra nks.

King of the Salian Franks 456-481
Childeric succeeded his semi-leg endary fdather Merovech as King of the
Salian Franks of Northern Gaul in 456, during the Roman times. He became
infatuated with the daughters of his subjec ts, who were so incensed about
this they forced him to give up the throne. He discovered that they intended
to assassinate him, and he fled to Thuringia, l eaving a close friend and
telling him to send a message when Childeric could r eturn to his kingdom.
Childeric took refuge with Bisnus, King of the Thuring ian Franks, and his
wife Basina. The King elected by the Franks was curel, an d soon after
Childeric was re-called to his kingdom by his friend, and was res tored to
the throne. Once Bisinus and Childerec were both kinds, Basina deser ted
her husband and went to live with Childeric, who married her and had a
so n, Clovis.
After a battle with Odoacer, King of the Saxons (and conquerer of the
Western Roman Empire, 476), at Orleans, Childeric and the Saxon King
mad e a peace treaty and together subdued the Alamanni, who had
Invaded a part of Italy. In 481 Childeric died and was succeeded by Clovis,
his son by Basina.
