Rosetta Sarah Levason
1838-1921
Her married name was Blamire.3 Rosetta Sarah Levason was born on 11 September 1838 at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.4,1,5 She was the daughter of Dr Lewis Levason and Kate Jones.1 Rosetta Sarah Levason appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, as Rosetta Sevason, age 3, birthplace Gloucestershire.6 She appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 16 Claremont Place, Clerkenwell, London, England, as Daughter, age 12, birthplace Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and she was a Bead Worker.5 She was baptized on 27 October 1858 at Christ Church, Great Homer Street, Everton, Lancashire, England; and a transcript reads:

'LEVASON, Rosetta Sarah     Christening
     Gender:     Female
     Birth Date:     11 Sep 1838
Christening Date:     27 Oct 1858     Recorded in: Everton, Lancashire, England
     Father:     Lewis LEVASON
     Mother:     Catherine.4,1'

She appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 81 Kingsdown Parade, Bristol, Avon, England, as Visitor, unmarried, age 32, birthplace Cheltenham, and she was a Teacher. The Head of the household was Jabez Horne, age 55, and Inspector of Schools. The household also included his Wife, Mary, age 60, and their children Celia Horne, age 24, a Teacher, and Jabez T Horne, age 20, 'Clk. in Wholesale Tea Ho.' plus one Scholar and a Servant.7,8 She married Thomas Blamire, son of William Blamire and Mary Liddle, on 26 November 1873 at Vice Consul's Office, Madrid, Spain.9,10,2, and Thomas Blamire was a 25 year old Bachelor and Missionary. Rosetta Sarah Levason was a 34 year old Spinster, who was also a Missionary. Their address was Calle de Servano - 10 3 o Before 4 June 1875 she presented her father with 'two watercolour pictures by herself', which he subsequently 'gave and bequeathed' to her in his will.11 Rosetta Sarah Levason was executrix of her Father's Will in 1876.12,11

There is ample of evidence of her time as a missionary in Spain. Each month the Christian Brethren who were serving as missionaries abroad wrote a newsletter to those back in England. These were collected together from various parts of the world, published and circulated. Thus numbers of these documents survive and provide a unique insight into what life was like, the attitudes of those the missionaries were seeking to convert and indirectly revealed something of their own attitudes and mindset. The accounts record the missionaries progress, setbacks and triumphs. Those from Marin, Spain, at this time were written mainly by Thomas Blamire and Rosetta Blamire. A typical example of one of the letters Rosetta sent is quoted verbatim below:

'‘SPAIN
Marin.—We have quite unexpectedly the pleasure of a visit from our brethren in Vigo and those on their way to Buenos Ayres with Br. Ewen. We are very glad indeed for them to be known to our people, as so many are constantly going out to South America. I should think that as many as forty believers, young and old, male and female, have emigrated from one or other of our meetings to whom have to be added unconverted relatives, and dozens of young lads who have been in our Day, Sunday, and Night Schools. As they go out in search of employment they do not all settle in Buenos Ayres. Still it will be nice to have someone to look them up when they arrive, if possible, and to keep an eye upon them afterwards, for from all accounts to live out there is very demoralizing and deadening to Spiritual life. Mr. Ewen we hope to see with Mr. Senington on Monday; they went to Ponferrada to bury a servant of our brother Hoyle’s, on of our earliest Vigo converts, who has been a faithful witness for Christ for about ten years, and blest to the conversion of not a few, also very helpful in the meetings wherever she has been. We all feel her departure very much; her husband was converted in Marin not long before they went to Leon.

‘The weather has been very stormy, and has swept many souls into eternity. A fishing-boat belonging to one of our brethren drifted on shore the other evening, the crew of five persons, all Romanists, drowned. A boy of about 12 or 14 was wrapped in his blanket, the water evidently suffocating him while asleep; he was one of our night-school boys, as were also two of the others; indeed it is thought that all of them had at one time heard the gospel. One of them had often heard it, and at one time the Spirit of God was evidently working in his heart, for his eyes would fill with tears; but bad companions got hold of him and his attendance and attention slackened. I spoke to him the Sunday before his death, having found him and two others sitting in the street playing cards. The others answered boldly and rudely, but he was ashamed, hung down his head and would not look me in the face; the next thing we heard was that he was drowned. By a marvellous providence our brother, the owner of the boat, was not in it, nor two sons of another believer who usually sailed in that boat. They had told their mother a short time before that they could no longer go in it because of the foul language and blasphemy of those in charge. Neither the nets nor tackle were lost out of the boat—only the men who had rejected the gospel!

‘Our meetings are well filled, and going on as usual in the winter. Day, Sunday and Night Schools are all increasing: Misses Wreford and Morgan working hard, particularly in the two latter.

Calle Real 10, Marin, Pontevedra,
March 8th, 1889. ROSETTA S. BLAMIRE’

Another such letter records how the local priests refused to give some fishermen drowned at sea a proper burial, as they had been unable to administer the last rites to the victims. Thomas agreed to bury the victims and made several new converts among the relatives and others in doing so. It was subsequently noted that on a later fishing trip the converts catch was large, but the Romanists caught nothing that day; this being interpreted as a sign from the Lord blessing their work.

William Anderson provides the following very instructive background information regarding the relevance of the 'gospels' mentioned in Rosetta's letter: 'The Catholic Church did not allow its followers to have Bibles and this particularly irritated the middle class and educated Spaniards. They were pleased to buy Bibles from the missionaries and to read the religious tracts which they freely distributed wherever they went. It was not unusual for Thomas to walk as much as forty miles in a day to preach in a village and suffer stoning by the villagers if incited by the priests. On at least one occasion the priest fired his shotgun at him but fortunately missed. It was not until he had been in Spain for many years that his church was able to supply him with a pony and trap.13'

After the death of her husband she returned to Britain with her sons.14 She was executrix of her husband's will, who died on 6 January 1894, and Administration was granted to her in London.15,16,17 She was photographed and this shows her in a head and shoulders portrait. Another photograph antedates this and shows Rosetta and Thomas's early congregation, where 'Rosetta is holding an open Bible and Thomas is the tall man on her right.18,19,20'

William Anderson writes: 'After Thomas’s death she later went to Germany to preach to the Jews and Catholics in Hamburg' and 'Rosetta is recorded in the internet record of emigrants as sailing to Vigo on the 30th October 1896 from Southampton on the Clyde which was bound for Buenas Aires Argentina. She sailed on the 2nd February from Liverpool to the Grand Canary on the Mendi bound for West Africa. Later on the 28th October 1919 she sailed from Liverpool to Halifax Canada on the Baltic a White Star liner. Presumably these were trips on behalf of the Christian Brethren.19'

She was also recorded as a United Kingdom Incoming Passenger as Rosetta S Blamire, age 58, aboard the Atrato arriving in Southampton, England, having embarked at Vigo, Spain on 30 June 1897.21 She appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Worcester Road, St Andrew Parish, Droitwich, Worcestershire, England, as R. Blamire, Boarder of Miss Agnes Pipe, Stationer. She was a 62 year old widow whose occupation was given as 'Missionary in Spain (Preach)', birthplace Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. She appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 36 Oxford Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, with her nephew Bernard Myer and his sons as Aunt, widowed, age 72, birthplace Cheltenham and she was a Missionary.22 She died on 7 February 1921 at age 82; and her death was recorded at Liverpool Registration district in the March quarter 1921, at age 82. The informant was her son T P Blamire and her address was given as 156 Chatham Street, Liverpool.23,24,25 She was buried 'in a purchased grave in Section 3 No 786 Folio 1601/32014 of the Register of Burials.26,27,28,29' Rosetta's obituary by the Christian Brethren was published in March 1921 as follows:

‘With Christ.

Mrs. Blamire née Rosetta S. Levason was born Sept. 11thm 1838, of Jewish parents, and was brought to Christ at the age of twenty. In 1869 she gave herself to the Lord’s service in Spain, and the first volume of this paper issued in 1872, shows her to have been then working in Madrid. In 1873 she married Mr. Thomas Blamire, with whom she continued to serve the Lord in Spain, principally in the north-west and until his home-call in January 1894. Much persecution had to be endured at the hands of the agents of Rome, but the work was greatly blessed of God. Mrs. Blamire continued in Spain for some time after her husband’s death, but for many years now has resided in this country. Latterly her sight failed, and it was difficult for her to obtain the care she needed in consequence, so that we cannot but rejoice that she now sees the King in His beauty. She departed on Feb. 7th. She had one sore trial in that, while she and her husband had been used to the conversion of many, their own two sons were still without Christ, and we ask the prayers of readers that they may yet be brought to know Him.’.30

Her estate was probated on 23 March 1921; as follows: '1921 Blamire Rosetta Sarah of 156 Chatham Street, Liverpool, widow, died 7 February 1921. Probate at Liverpool on 23 March to William Henry Staddon, schoolmaster and Mary Hope Parslow, spinster.31,17'
