Isobel Mordy was born on 25 October 1905 at Staffordshire, England, and her birth was recorded at Burslem Sub-district, Wolstanton Registration district in the December quarter 1905.2,3 She was the daughter of William Mordy and Annie Louisa Maurice.1,2 Isobel Mordy appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 282 Waterloo Road, Burslem, Staffordshire, England, as Daughter, age 5, no birthplace recorded.4 She was educated at London University where she gained a First Class Honours Degree in Mathematics.5 She was executrix for her Mother on 03 January 1945 and the National Probate Calendar for 1945 records her Mother was of '29 Bigwood Avenue Hove Sussex widow' and Probate was granted at Llandudno 'to Isobel Mordy spinster'.6

In her obituary, Dr Anthony Joseph writes of her career:

'...She moved into social work, and after some time spent at settlements in the East End of London she became involved in children's welfare and was, for many years, Principal Children's Office for Bournemouth. During the course of her work she found so many of her charges puzzled by their uncertain backgrounds, with anxieties about their origins, and Isobel developed an interest in investigating their adoptions or family trees. This led, by natural progression, into an investigation of her own genealogy, in which subject (and its wider applications) she then became very interested for the last 30 years or so of her life. She developed a considerable expertise which commended admiration and respect, and her advice became much in demand on genealogical problems....5'

She was the author of The Child Wants a Home: Foster-homes: how and Why? In 1956.7 She was the author of The Jones of Lyn Family Tree.8 She was the author of Notes made from the monumental inscriptions in the Jews' burial ground, Cheltenham held at Cheltenham Local Studies Centre in 1971.9 She was the author of My Ancestors Were Jewish, originally published in 1982. Dr Anthony Joseph, the current author, writes in the Forward of the 3rd Edition of 2002 that Isobel Mordy 'died in 1993 and my obituary of her was published in the Genealogists' Magazine Volume 24 (September 1993) page 299. Notwithstanding her increasing infirmity during the last few months of her life, combined with failing eyesight and deteriorating mobility, she laboured on a revision of this booklet and agreed that Charles Tucker should complete it and expand and update the bibliographies'. He goes on to praise her on 'the very sound foundation' her original edition provided.10 She was the Editor of The Jewish Community of Frankfurt: A Genealogical Study 1349-1849 by Alexander Dietz. A translation of Stammbuch der Frankfurter Juden in 1988.11 She was the author of a Collection of Jewish Records microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City. This comprises 'original records in the custody of Isobel Mordy, Ruislip, Middlesex. Records later transferred to the collection of the Society of Genealogists, London'.12

She died on 3 April 1993 at Hertfordshire, England, at age 87 and her death was recorded at St Albans Registration district, at that time.13,5 Her obituary by Dr Anthony Joseph appeared in Shemot. A further notice reads:

'Isobel Mordy, who has died aged 87, was the doyenne of Anglo-Jewish genealogy, taking over from Ronald d'Arcy Hart, whose papers she sorted for the benefit of researchers after his death in 1985. Born in Stoke-on-Trent, the daughter of a non jewish mining engineer and his jewish wife, she became aware of her jewish backgroung from her maternal relatives while studying at London University. She became a social worker in East London and was children's officer for Bournemouth from 1949 - 1965. Her interest in genealogy was first awakened by confusion expressed by children in her charge over their origins. After retirement, she developed considerable expertise in the subject. She joined the society of genealoogists in 1964 and was also active in the Association of Genealogical Records Agents. Unmarried, she declined on the grounds of age to preside over the second International Jewish Genealogical seminar six years ago.5,14' Her estate was probated on 2 July 1993; and she was of 123 West End Road, Ruislip, Middlesex.15
