     Edward Alex Michaelis Hallenstein was born in 1909 at London, England; and his birth was recorded as Edward Alex Michaelis Hallenstein at Paddington Registration district in the December quarter 1909.1,2 He was the son of Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein and Anna Frances Jacob.4 Edward Alex Michaelis Hallenstein appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Andlows Farm, Prestwood, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, England, as Edward Abe Halanstine, Visitor of T J and Ann Beeson, age 1, birthplace London. Mary Ann Bull was a Nurse in the Beeson household.5 Edward Alex Michaelis Hallenstein was also known as Edward Alex Michaelis Halsted.1,3 Edward Alex Michaelis Hallenstein was also known as Edward Alex Michaelis Halstead.6 He lived on 29 September 1939 at Sussex, England; where he was on the 1939 Register in the Midhurst area.7 He died on 5 March 1941 at West Hertfordshire Hospital, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England; and his death was recorded at Hemel Hempstead Registration district in the March quarter 1941.8,3 His estate was probated; and the 1941 National Probate Calandar records he was 'of Cedar Court Hotel Sutton Surrey' and Probate was granted at Llandudno 'to Stanley Meyer Harris sales manager.3'

     Victor Michaelis Halsted was born on 16 September 1916 at London, England; and his birth was registered in the September quarter 1916 at Paddington Registration district.4,5 He was the son of Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein and Anna Frances Jacob.3 Victor Michaelis Halsted was also known as Victor Michaelis Halstead He may be referred to in some documents as Victor M Halstead.5

He was mobilised during the Second World War for service as an Officer in the Royal Australian Naval V Reserve: 'Service Number - PM2133 : Date of birth - 16 Sep 1916 : Place of birth - LONDON ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - PORT MELBOURNE : Next of Kin - HALSTED ERN' on 4 September 1939. His description was: 5 feet 6¼ inches. Colour of Lt. Hair Brown, Eyes Brown, Complexion Sallow. He was appointed as Paymaster Sub-Lieutenant and he was demobilsed 28 September 1945.6

He was recorded arriving on an Incoming Passenger List at Southampton, England, sailing on the Stirling Castle from Hamburg, Germany. He was age 29, a Merchant, and he had been living in Australia on 25 July 1946.7 He married Dulcie Rosalind Myer, daughter of Major Henry Dennis Myer and Louie Ruth Solomon, in 1948 at London, England; and a reference is made in 'The History of the Bayswater Synagogue 1863-1963' as follows:

     'Victor [Halsted] married Dulcie, eldest daughter of Major H. D. Myer, a [Bayswater Synagogue] member of about sixty years' standing and a grandson of one of the founders, Henry Solomon, as well as a great-nephew of Chief Rabbi Dr. Hermann Adler'.

Their marriage was recorded at Paddington Registration district in the March quarter 1948.8,9

Victor Michaelis Halsted and Dulcie Rosalind Myer lived between 1948 and 1965 at Highgate, London, England; where they appeared on the Electoral Register.10 Victor Michaelis Halsted was mentioned in his Father's obituary in The Jewish Chronicle which stated that 'Colonel Halsted's ideals are being carried on by his son, Victor M Halsted' on 26 October 1951.11 He was Warden of the West London Synagogue of British Jews, Upper Berkeley Street, London W.1.12

He was executor to his Aunt and the 1963 National Probate Calendar records Lisbet Jacob was 'of The Old Cottage Creeksea near Burnham on Crouch Essex' and Probate was granted in London 'to Stanley Meyer Harris trade association officer and Victor Michaelis Halsted company director' on 4 April 1963.13 He was executor for his Uncle and the National Probate Calendar for 1965 records Edwin Ellis Jacob was 'of 60 Western Road Burnham-on-Crouch Essex' and Probate was granted at London to 'Victor Michaelis Halsted company director and Stanley Meyer Harris trade association officer'' on 29 January 1965.13 He died on 10 December 1969 at London, England, at age 53; and his death was recorded at St Pancras Registration district in the December quarter 1969.2,14 His estate was probated; The Archives of New Zealand, Dunedin Regional Office, contain Probate and Letters of Administration files for 'HALSTED Victor Michaelis - London - Merchant', from Dunedin High Court, New Zealand, dated 1970. The 1970 National Probate Calendar records Victor Michaels Halsted was 'of 3 Ardwick Rd London N.W.2 and 98-106 Cannon St London E.C.4' and probate was granted 1 May 1970 at London Registry.15,13 He was commemorated in The New Rambler, Journal of the Johnson Society of London, January 1970 (Issue C VIII).16

     Denis Edgar Samuel was born on 5 October 1915 at London, England; and his birth was registered in the December quarter 1915 at Kensington Registration district.4,5,1,6 He was the son of Edgar Henriques Samuel and Hilda Muriel Myer.1 Denis Edgar Samuel lived between 1937 and 1939 at 42 Palace Gardens Terrace, Kensington, London, England; with Brenda Ruth Samuel, Edgar Henriques Samuel and Hilda Muriel Samuel, plus Audrey Violet Samuel in 1938-1939, and their names were all listed on the London Electoral Register.7 He and Sheila Jeanne Merriman were engaged on 8 November 1945; as published in the following notice in The Times, Forthcoming Marriages: 'Mr. D. E. Samuel and Miss S. J. Merriman - The engagement is announced between Denis Edgar Samuel, Intelligence Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar H. Samuel, of 83, Campden Hill Court, W.8., and Sheila Jeanne Merriman, F.A.N.Y., youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh M. (Interred privately.).5,3' He appeared on a list of Passengers Leaving the UK as S Turner, Male, born 1866, departing from London, England, for Melbourne, Australia in 1890.6 He was thought to be referred to in the following article in the Brisbane Courier with the title 'Sporting. Sandgate Hacks': '...The handicaps for the great Austral Wheel Race of £200, to be run in Melbourne next month, have been declared, and "Ixion" in the Melbourne Leader, after an elaborate review of the handicaps, fancies the chances of the following six :-Spiro Turner, W.      Rev. Victor Spiro Turner was born on 25 October 1905 at North Adelaide Private Hospital, South Adelaide, South Australia, Australia; and his birth was announced in The Advertiser (Adelaide) of 1 November 1905 as 'a son.3,4,5' He was the son of Spiro Turner and Amy Ada Jones.1 Rev. Victor Spiro Turner was educated on 6 February 1919 at St. Aloysius', Milsons Point, New South Wales, Australia; and was listed in The Catholic Press, Catholic School Successes for the Qualifying School Certificate Examination.6 He appeared as a student, on the 1930 Australian Electoral Roll. at 33 Greenwich Road, Lane Cove, North Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.7 He was appointed as an Army Chaplain and records are held in the National Archives of Australia; he enlisted at Paddington, New South Wales on 12 November 1940.8,9 He was a Prisioner of War 'from Zentsuji POW Camp [Hiroshima #1]' listed as 'Name: Turner, Victor Spiro, Rank: Chaplain, Service Number: NX70432, Nation: Aust, Unit: 2/22nd' working at Coal Mine for Jisakuno Mining. between June 1942 and September 1945 at Japan.10,11,12 He was recorded in The Argus (Melbourne) of 3 June 1942 under 'Prisoners of War' as follows:

'Mrs Spiro Turner, of Horaham, has received a letter from her son, Chaplain Victor Turner, who is a prisoner in Rabaul. His letter stated that he was in excellent health.'

The newspaper item also contained a photograph of Chaplain Victor Turner (which, unfortunately, in its online format has reproduced as a black square).13 He wrote further to his mother from the camp and the envelope appeared on an online auction site described as:

'Prisoner of War envelope on the official stationery of the Zentsuji Prisoner of War Camp in Japan mailed 25 August 1942 from interned Lark Force Jesuit Chaplain Victor Spiro Turner to his mother in Elwood, Victoria, Australia. No contents.

'Surrendered 23 January 1942, HQ 23 Infantry Brigade, Unit 2/22nd Service No. NX70432, the Rev. Turner and the other officers were first imprisoned at their former military camp on Malaguna Road and then transported by ship to Japan. He was put to work in Zentsuji, on the island of Shikoku, and later as forced labor at the Coal Mine for the Jisakuno Mining Co.

'He enlisted at Paddington, NSW, on 12 November 1940, at the age of 35 (born 25 October 1905). Liberated in 1945, he resumed his duties as a Registered Clergyman, S.J., number 9514, in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Melbourne, Belloc House, Kew...14'

     Samuel Verdun Turner was born on 14 July 1916 at St Osyth, Holt Avenue, Cremorne, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; and his birth was announced in The Sydney Morning Herald of 22 July 1916 as 'a son (Billy? Samuel Verdun).3,4,5' He was the son of Spiro Turner and Amy Ada Jones.1,2 Samuel Verdun Turner enlisted during WWII, giving his mother as his next of kin, and The National Archives of Australia hold his records at Canberra, A.C.T., in the series 'RAAF Personnel files of Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and other ranks, 1921-1948' ; his Service Number was 120894 between 1939 and 1948 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.6 He married Dearma Jeanette Jackman in 1946 at Victoria, Australia.7 Samuel Verdun Turner was an elector and appeared with his wife in the Australian Electoral Roll as Manager at: Grand Central Hotel, Hamilton, Wannon; 34 Mitchell Street, Bairnsdale, Gippsland; 17a Milton Street, S3, Isaacs, St Kilda in 1949 at Victoria, Australia.8,9 He died on 18 November 1950 at Liverpool Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, at age 34; and his death, the '(result of accident)', was recorded at Sydney District; he was 'of of 54 Earl Street, Roseville, late of Elwood, Melbourne, dearly loved husband of Dearma Turner and dear brother of Reverend Father Victor Turner, S. J., aged 34 years.2,10' He was the subject of an obituary and Death Notice in the Sydney Morning Herald, New South Wales on 20 November 1950.11,10 He was buried on 22 November 1950 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.10 His estate was probated on 11 January 1952; as he appears on New South Wales, Australia, Index to Deceased Estate Files, as Manager.12
