      Sydney Nelson Cross was also known as Nelson Cross.1 He was born on 18 February 1919 at New Zealand.1,3,4 He was the son of Joseph John Cross and Harriet Annie Stowell.1 Sydney Nelson Cross died on 21 April 1943 at Denmark at age 24; when he was killed in action in World War II. The Commonwealth Wargraves Commission provide the provide information:

'Name: CROSS, SYDNEY NELSON. Initials: S N. Nationality: New Zealand. Rank: Pilot Officer (Pilot). Regiment/Service: Royal New Zealand Air Force. Unit Text: 90 (R.A.F.) Sqdn. Age: 24. Date of Death: 21/04/1943. Service No: 414258. Additional information: Son of Joseph John and Harriet Annie Cross, of Tuapeka Mouth, Otago, New Zealand. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead. Grave/Memorial Reference: Grave 31. Cemetery: Svino Churchyard, Denmark'; plus the following historical information: 'Svino Churchyard contains a Commonwealth plot of 62 burials, all airmen, eight of them unidentified.2'

He was commemorated ion his Parents monumental inscription: 'In loving memory of Harriet Annie beloved wife of Joseph John CROSS died 12th Oct 1948 aged 63 years also their beloved son Pilot Officer Sydney Nelson CROSS killed in action 20th April 1943 aged 24 years also the above Joseph John CROSS died 19th July 1959 aged 79 years' at Balclutha Lawn Cemetery, Otago, New Zealand.5

Location Information: Lapugnoy is a village 6 kilometres west of Bethune. From the centre of Lapugnoy, head south-west on the D70 in the direction of Marles-les-Mines. On the outskirts there is a crucifix at the side of the main road, turn right here towards Allouagne. After approximately 500 metres there is a track on the left hand side (the Cemetery is signposted here) and the Cemetery can be found on the left hand side, approximately 500 metres, along this track.
Historical Information: The first burials were made in Plot I of the cemetery in September 1915, but it was most heavily used during the Battle of Arras, which began in April 1917. The dead were brought to the cemetery from casualty clearing stations, chiefly the 18th and the 23rd at Lapugnoy and Lozinghem, but between May and August 1918 the cemetery was used by fighting units. Lapugnoy Military Cemetery contains 1,323 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 11 from the Second World War, all dating from May 1940. The cemetery was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

     John Sydney Phillips was born on 10 February 1895 at 8 Greenfield Crescent, Edgbaston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; and his birth was registered in the March quarter 1895 at King's Norton Registration district, Warwickshire.1,3,4 He was the son of Harry Philip Phillips and Hannah Caroline Alex Myer.1 John Sydney Phillips appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 30 Pembridge Gardens, Kensington, London, England, as [Son of Carrie A Phillips, niece of Leah (Alex) Nathan], age 6, birthplace could be Birmingham, Warwickshire.1 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Greenfield, Balsall, Warwickshire, England, as Son, age 16, birthplace Birmingham, Warwickshire, and he was at School.5 The following notice appeared in London Gazette Issue 29852 published on the 5 December 1916 concerning his military service during the Great War [World War I]:-

'The undermentioned N.C.O's. and men to be temp. 2nd Lts. (on prob.): — Royal Regiment of Artillery. R.G.A:— Cbrpl. John Sydney Phillips. 12th Nov. 1916.6' 'The London Gazette Issue 30718 published on the 31 May 1918' contained the following notice of the award of The Miliatry Cross to 'T./Capt. John Sydney Phillips, S. Staffs. R.7'

He was awarded a B.Sc in 1925, M.A. in 1930 and an M.Sc in 1931 at Oxford University.8 He was the first student at the University of Hawaii to earn a PhD (His thesis topic was The Biology, Distribution, and Control of Ants in Hawaiian Pineapple Fields.) in 1933. He wrote his final exam in rhyming verse. Upon graduation he was employed on a coconut plantation in the Solomon Islands for Lever brothers.8,9,10,11

He was recorded as sailing from Southampton, England, to Quebec, Canada, aboard the Empress India arriving on 15 August 1935.12,13 He appears in a record of Detroit Boarder Crossings and Passenger and Crew Lists as age 40, 5ft 7 1/2 inches tall; occupation Entomologist, Father Henry Phillips of Oak Mount Westbourne Road, Birmingham on 16 August 1935.14 He returned to England with the onset of World War II and 'taught for a period of time'.8

He lived on 29 September 1939 at B6 Kenilworth Court, Hagley Road, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; where he was on the 1939 Register.15 He was included in the will of his father made in 1927 and who died in 1941.4 He died in 1948 at Warwickshire, England; and his death was recorded at Birmingham Registration district in the June quarter 1948.16
