Burma
Sgt Ernest Hills was born on 6 March 1920 at England; and his birth was recorded at Edmonton Registration district, Essex, in the June quarter 1920.1,2 He was the son of Leonard Andrew Hills and Elizabeth Maria Patmore.1 Sgt Ernest Hills appeared on the census of 19 June 1921 at Edmonton, Middlesex, England, as born at Edmonton, Middlesex, England, in 1920.3 He lived on 29 September 1939 at 57 Chalfont Road, Edmonton, Middlesex, England; where he was on the 1939 Register when he was single and his occupation was 'Driller Bakelite Moulder.2' He married Dorothy Irene Bowser in 1942 at Middlesex, England; and their marriage was recorded at Edmonton Registration district in the September quarter 1942.4 Sgt Ernest Hills died on 25 March 1945 at Burma at age 25; age 24, while serving in the Second World War in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 2854 Sqdn., R.A.F. Regt., Service Number 1255848.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission give the following historical information:

'TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY is the largest of the three war cemeteries in Burma (now Myanmar). It was begun in 1951 for the reception of graves from four battlefield cemeteries at Akyab, Mandalay, Meiktila and Sahmaw which were difficult to access and could not be maintained. The last was an original 'Chindit' cemetery containing many of those who died in the battle for Myitkyina. The graves have been grouped together at Taukkyan to preserve the individuality of these battlefield cemeteries

'Burials were also transferred from civil and cantonment cemeteries, and from a number of isolated jungle and roadside sites. Because of prolonged post-war unrest, considerable delay occurred before the Army Graves Service were able to complete their work, and in the meantime many such graves had disappeared. However, when the task was resumed, several hundred more graves were retrieved from scattered positions throughout the country and brought together here.

'There are now 6,389 Second World War Commonwealth service persons buried or commemorated in this cemetery, 867 of which are unidentified.

'In the 1950s, the graves of 52 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War were brought into the cemetery from the following cemeteries where permanent maintenance was not possible: Henzada (1); Meiktila Cantonment (8); Thayetmyo New (5); Thamakan (4); Mandalay Military (12) and Maymyo Cantonment (22).

'Taukkyan War Cemetery also contains:

'The RANGOON MEMORIAL, which bears the names of almost 27,000 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died during the campaigns in Burma and who have no known grave.

'The TAUKKYAN CREMATION MEMORIAL commemorating more than 1,000 Second World War casualties whose remains were cremated in accordance with their faith.

'The TAUKKYAN MEMORIAL which commemorates 46 servicemen of both wars who died and were buried elsewhere in Burma but whose graves could not be maintained.5,6,7,8' He was buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery, Mingaladon, Yangon, Burma; at Plot 5, Row A. Grave number 17. Myanmar, as the 'Son of Lenard and Elizabeth Hills; husband of Dorothy Irene Hills, of Edmonton, Middlesex', with the personal inscription:

'SUNSHINE PASSES, SHADOWS FALL BUT LOVE AND REMEMBRANCES OUTLAST ALL'.5,9

He was commemorated at Men of Edmonton Cenotaph War Memorial, Edmonton, Middlesex, England.10,11 He was commemorated at National Memorial Arboretum, Croxall Rd, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.12 He was commemorated with the history of the Burma Campaign among many books published on the subject. For example The RAF Regiment at War 1942-1946 by Leo Cooper charts the Regiment's history, outlined in the Synopsis: 'Born out of necessity in the dark days of the War, the RAF Regiment found itself in the thick of the action supporting the vital operations in all theatres. This comprehensive record of their operations gives the clearest indication of the contribution that the Regiment made and includes many first hand accounts of the fighting, including the first shooting-down of a jet aircraft, the Me 262A-2a Sturmvogel in November 1944. As a result of their outstanding contributions to the success of RAF operations in WW2, the Regiment became a permanent part of the RAF'.
