Andrew Weir 1st Baron Inverforth was born on 24 April 1865 at Kirkcaldy, Fifeshire, Scotland.1 He married Tomania Anne Dowie on 1 August 1889.1,2 Andrew Weir 1st Baron Inverforth and Tomania Anne Dowie 'had one son and five daughters. The son, Andrew Alexander Morton (b. 1897), besides succeeding his father in the title and as chairman of the United Baltic Corporation, did so also as chairman of Andrew Weir & Co.' Andrew Weir 1st Baron Inverforth appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Blanefield Mansion, Kirkoswald, Ayrshire, Scotland, as Head, married, age 35, birthplace Kirkcaldy, Fifeshire, and he was a Shipowner.3 He lived at The Hill (Inverforth House), Hampstead, London, England; and he purchased 'the whole estate and the new house named Inverforth House' according to an article on 'North End, Littleworth, And Spaniard's End'. 'Lord Leverhulme died in 1925 and the property was acquired in 1926 by Andrew Weir, first Baron Inverforth. Lord Inverforth lived at The Hill until his death ...' The Parks and Gardens UK website describes it in 2009 as 'The Hill, occupying about 3 hectares, is located to the north of Hampstead, on the eastern edge of the West Heath area of Hampstead Heath. Inverforth House and The Hill gardens are bounded by North End Way to the east, Inverforth Close to the north and the Heath to the north (beyond the Close), west and south. The gardens are enclosed by fences. The site slopes down from Inverforth House to the west, with exceptional views to the west and south-west from the gardens and the pergola over the Heath and beyond'.4,5 He lived on 15 October 1949 at The Hill, Hampstead, London, England; at the time of his eldest daughter's marriage.6 He was the subject of the following biographical information:

'Andrew Weir, 1st Baron Inverforth PC (April 24, 1865 - September 17, 1955) created and headed the firm of Andrew Weir and Co. shipowners of Glasgow. In the First World War he served as a minister in the coalition government: he was Surveyor General of Supplies from 1917-1919, and Minister of Munitions from 1919-1921

'Andrew Weir was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife the eldest son of William Weir and his wife, Janet. Both William Weir and his father were cork merchants. After attending the high school at Kirkcaldy, Andrew went to work for the Commercial Bank of Scotland. He soon moved to Glasgow. Shortly after his twentieth birthday, he bought a sailing ship, the barque Willowbank, which he employed in the coasting trade. The next year Weir began building sailing ships of modern design and within a few years had built up a fleet of fifty-two. In 1896 Weir moved to London and started converting his fleet from sail to steam.

'During the First World War in March 1917 Weir was asked to report on the commercial organization of the supply branches of the army. Weir recommended the appointment of a surveyor-general of supply, with a seat on the army council, to take over the task of supplying the army with all its stores and equipment other than munitions. His recommendations were accepted and he was given the job.

'In January 1919 after the war had ended he was appointed Minister of Munitions to close down the supply operation and dispose of unwanted materiel. He remained in office until March 1921. For his services Weir was raised to the peerage Baron Inverforth, of Southgate in the County of Middlesex, and received the American Distinguished Service Medal.' ...

'After the war Lord Inverforth invested in diesel powered ships. He also broadened his business interests becoming involved in the Marconi group of companies. He was also chairman of the Anglo-Burma Burma Rice Company and of the Wilmer Grain Company, and was also on the board of Lloyds Bank.
Inverforth continued to go to the office four days a week, into his ninety-first year. He died at his home in Hampstead on 17 September 1955.7,8,9,10' He died on 17 September 1955 at London, England, at age 90; and his death as 'Andrew Weir (Baron Inverforth)' was recorded at Hampstead Registration district in the September quarter 1955.1,11 His estate was probated; and the 1955 National Probate Calendar has the following entry: 'Baron INVERFORTH OF SOUTHGATE MIDDLESEX the right-honourable Andrew Weir P.C. of The Hill Hampstead Heath London N.W.3. died 17 September 1955 Probate London 3 October to Andrew Alexander Morton Wier baron Inverforth of Southgate Middlesex company director and Robert Jardine chartered accountant.
