His parents were married at St John's Clerkenwell on 14th November 1843 when they were both 24 years old and Robert was described as a 'French Clog Maker.1,3' He married Mary Ann Butler, daughter of James Butler and Mary Ann Bennett, on 30 August 1879 at St Luke, Old Street, Islington, London, England; and their marriage was recorded at Holborn Registration district in the September quarter 1879.      John Shaw was born on 15 February 1811 at Westminster, London, England; and his parents were John Shaw (1774-1819) and Susanna Jones (1786-1847).1,2,3 He was baptized on 20 March 1811 at St Margaret, Westminster, London, England.2 He signed an Indenture as 'son of John Shaw late of the parish of Saint Margaret Westminster deceased'.Thus indenturing himself as Apprentice to 'John Morris Citizen and Pattenmaker of London to learn his Art...for seven years...in Consideration of the sum of ninety nine pounds of good and lawful money current in great Britain...' on 13 October 1825.4 He appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Charles Street, Westminster, London, England, as age 30, birthplace in Middlesex, and he was an Engraver. Also in the household were Susannah, age 60, occupation Baker, and (John) Duncan, age 22, who was also a Baker.5 He was was listed as engraver in the Post Office London Directory (Small Edition) 1852 at St Michael's Chambers, 42 Cornhill, London, England.6 He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at 8 Judd Street, St Pancras, London, England, as Lodger, age 50, unmarried, birthplace London, and he was an Engraver.7

He married Catharine Mardell on 13 October 1864 at Register Office, Clerkenwell, London, England; and their marriage was recorded at Clerkenwell Registration district in the December quarter 1864.8,9,10 John Shaw and Catharine Mardell had several children including John Duncan, Catherine Susannah Diamond, Farquhar Collins, Maude Marion and Florence Ada.1,8,11 John Shaw was an Engraver at the time his Son Farquhar Collins Shaw was baptised and the family were living at Clarence Road, London, England on 25 August 1868.12 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 25 Rodney Residences, Clerkenwell, London, England, as Head, married, age 70, birthplace Westminster, Middlesex, and he was a 'Genl Engraver (Artiz) (Employing 1 Apprentice)'. The household also contained his wife Catherine, age 41, and his sons John D Shaw and Farquhar C Shaw and daughters Maud M Shaw and Florence A Shaw.1 He was was listed in The Post Office Directory as an Engraver (nr Great St Helens) in 1882 and also in the 1884 Business Directory of London at 37 Bishopsgate Street Within, City of London, London, England.13,14 He died on 2 July 1890 at 25 Rodney Residences, Clerkenwell, London, England, at age 79; and his death was recorded at Holborn Registration district in the September quarter 1890.15,16 His estate was probated; and the National Probate Calendar for 1891 records '7 February. Administration (with Will) of the Personal Estate of John Shaw late of 25 Rodney-residences Pentonville in the County of Middlesex who died 2 July 1890 at 25 Rodney-residences was granted at the Principal Registry to Catherine Shaw of 41 Claremont-square Pentonville Widow the Relict.17'
