GEORGE HAWLEY MACFIE-(the major)

There passed away at Clarenceville on the 16th day of January this year (1921) a citizen who in a quiet way had filled positions of trust in his community had prospered in worldly affairs and was held in great esteem by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
George H Macfie was born at Clarenceville on the 27th day of February 1855, the eldest son of the late Robert Macfie and the grandson of Alexander Macfie who came to Canada about 1822, of Langhouse Renfrewshire Scotland, and settled at Clarenceville. He was one of the well known Macfie family which sent no less than 61 members in the late war of whom many never returned. The subject of this sketch was educated at the local schools and the Clarenceville Academy, marrying in 1884 Miss Josephine Creller and started life as a farmer a pursuit which he followed with success all his life. His whole life was spent in Clarenceville, taking an active part in local affairs a Municipal Councilor and School Commissioner as well as interesting himself in all local affairs for the benefit of the community in which he lived. apart from those things, he took a keen and active interest in military affairs joining on its formation the Clarenceville troop of Cavalry which afterwards became a squadron of the 6th Hussars and to properly fit himself for the work he passed through the Cavalry School at Quebec having as members of his class many who subsequently attained distinction among them being Major General Sir Richard Turner , He was gazetted to the command of the Squadron with the rank of Major He declined further promotions waiving the seniority which would have given him command of the Regiment. Major Macfie had a host of warm friends. He was a man of unswerving probity, a courteous and obliging neighbour, one who was always willing to lend a helping hand in any good work, but his quiet unassuming manner kept him from coming into the open. He was devoted to his family and to his calling of which he made a success. He was a member of the Church of England and a Conservative in politics. Besides a large circle of friends he leaves to mourn his loss his widow and two children, a son and a daughter. <

Major George Hawley Macfie was called to leave us after a long lingering illness on Jan 16th 1923, He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Macfie and was born Feb. 27th 1855 On Oct. 22 1884 he married Miss Josephine Creller daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Horatio Creller. The Major was of a quiet disposition, always sustained a good character , was upright in dealing and much respected in the community. He had a son and daughter. The son is in business in Montreal, the daughter Mrs. Scriver resides in Montana There are several grandchildren, his two sisters Miss Annie and Miss Lillie Macfie were at the funeral, two brothers live in the "far West" . The service was conducted in the Anglican Church by the Rev Mr. Booy and the remains were placed in the cemetery at the village. The widow who is left alone has the sympathy of the whole community The Major was a kind and affectionate husband, a loving father and grandfather and his friends and neighbours will greatly miss him. Why such men are removed and others not, is something we do not understand.

R.H. Creller was in possession of lot 226 concession 8 and most probably the same lot in concession 9, this land bordered on land owned by Robert Macfie, George's father. Robert also owned a small general store located on lot 223 the store Townsend and Macfie may have provided work for George, and at the same time allowed him to converse with most of the ladies of the area. We can imagine that Josephine must have come shopping with her mother at some time or other and thus a relationship began that ended in marriage.

George Hawley Macfie was appointed Mayor of Clarenceville in 1915 , for a regular one year term.

Robert Eugene was named after his grandfather and his mother's favourite brother Eugene Creller who had gone to Grass Valley California in search of gold

Ellison Westgarth was named after an aunt in Scotland, one who had married a Mr Westgarth of Australia
