Robert Andrew Macfie jr.

of

Dreghorn

The majority of the information on this particular aspect of the Macfie family connection has been kindly provided by Luis F Macfie of Puerto Rico, and Heather Douglas Lyle of the USA. It was decided to begin with an extract of an e-mail I received back in 2003.

A letter signed by Peter J W Kilpatrick ( who stated he was 66 at the time of writing the letter August 25 1971) He wrote (to Auriel Douglas in the USA) in the letter " You are evidently not in touch with the Macfie relations in this country. I hope you won't be offended by the story that my aunt (aged 88) told me only last month about your grandfather ( reference is here made to Robert Andrew). She said that he went to South America and when there did a thing that was so terrible that his photograph was taken out of all the family photograph albums and he was never mentioned again. Apparently he married a Roman Catholic.

It can be assumed from the actions of Robert Andrew Macfie ( junior) , that he was more inclined to be business minded, as opposed to being family oriented, different from his immediate family members. In reading the stories of the Macfie of Scotland there is a sense that most of the benefits received from the sugar operations were used to promote pious undertakings, such as building churches, funding socially acceptable aid programs and the likes. I have often surmised that had the Macfie family joined enterprises with some of the other connected families such as the Thorburn tea enterprise , the Allan shipping companies, the Gault land development corporation, they might have formed such a conglomerate that would have allowed thier business name to have continued right up to the present times of the 21st century.

Records in the family book of Lady McClure show Robert Andrew Macfie (jr) , married Pauline Keating, and producing off spring of two boys.

There are very little family records referring to him, other than his birth , his marriage to Miss Keating and the birth of his sons. In the other documents that I have managed to consult, I have found very little of Robert Andrew, so unlike my main family web pages I was at a loss as to what to do about this cousin.

Following the receipt of the e-mail containing the little bits of notes written by Mr Kilpatrick , an attempt was made to seek out one Auriel Douglas in the Sacremento area of the California. If was just so lucky that Heather Douglas, Auriel 's daughter found my Macfie family site and contacted me, otherwise I would never have managed to find out more about Robert Andrew Macfie (junior) and his families, one Scottish, and one Puerto Rican.

Some original work had begun on a Puerto Rican , Macfie family, as I had been in contact with Roberto Macfie some years back, however the missing links did not allow us to make any connections. I had not enough information on Robert Andrew (jr) and Roberto had not enough information on his grandfather, neither of us had thought that there might have been such a match to the same man so we did not continue.

I have been unable to discover very little on Pauline Keating, or Douglas Arthur Macfie and his wife Clara Mina Schreyer. I had managed to find a bit more about Robert Francis Macfie of the 'Tank ' fame, but again had no idea that he had also produced offspring.

There was nothing of course that would even allow me to assume that Robert Andrew (jr) might have had a second family .

Now in this 21st century with the advent of the internet, the mystery of Robert Andrew Macfie ( jr) and his adventures has come full cycle and I do believe it is time that we bring the estranged family back into the circle. I would like to continue with the original idea of my web pages , that is making the history of the Sugar Macfie family an on going project so those of us who are interested can contirbute.

It would certainly be a shame if we could not at least recuperate some of the artifacts, some of the family papers, more of the family history, rather than letting it all go to waste as each generation passes, and their holdings are simple tossed into the rubbish. It is now that we have the opportunity to record the facts.

However before we get too involved with the Puerto Rico relations , with the aid of the 21st century World Wide Web it was determined Robert Andrew Macfie jr had gotten himself involved with a lady in Hawaii before he left for Puerto Rico. The initial information arose from e-mail correspondence with Johann Ann who was tracing her Lovell line. Once things began to develop and more information was unravelled we found Robert Andrew jr' s relationship with Ann Lovell had produced two boys and that the family had some how followed him to the eastern part of the USA, before he apparently abandoned them and involved himself in another relationship , this union resulting in several offspring with a young lady in Puerto Rico. His selfish actions certainly go a long way to explain the reason he was simply written out of the family records. Robert was still officially married to Pauline Keating, when he first decided to enter into a union with Ann Lovell, who was abandoned whence he decided to involve himself with his Secretary in Puerto Rico, and produce another set of dependants . While I would image the Macfie family had over the years experienced difficult matrimonial situations, my own Alexander Macfie no doubt being the first, they would certainly not have been able to fully comprehend the actions of Robert Andrew Macfie jr..

Further more it would appear Robert Andrew (jr) while in a relationship with one young Peurto Rican girl having produced several children, had put her with child at the same time as he had gotten his secretary , a 16 year old girl pregnant. Both girls giving birth in the same year while it appears they lived only some 20 km from one another.

Edith had married Alfred Erenst Chadwick on the 16th of April 1921, a daughter Edith Muriel was born to this union in July of 1922, and died in 1985.
Edith Muriel no doubt knew only that her father was Robert Francis as he was so named in the records of her first marriage.
It was not until her second marriage that we find her listing her biological father on her marriage certificate.

According to notes in Lady McClure's book Robert had called Robin Macfie at his office in Montreal , 22 Oct 1923 and again Dec 1926,
note was made in book by Robin himself, unfortunately the jest of the conversation was not recorded any where.
Robert Francis, is alledged to have been one of the primary figures in the invention of the TANK , a weapon of war. There is a book ---
There are records on file in the Archives in England that show; Robert Francis being named as a co respondant in the divorce of Edith Gertrude Chadwick 1924
With the kind contribution of Auriel Macfie's daughter Heather Douglas of the USA ,we have been able to place many of Robert Francis's inventions both planes and the tank within our family web pages.
There are several exterior links that have been written in regard to Robert as the man behind many inventions , a list of these sites can be found on the page of his inventions.

Coutersy of family member Karin Young Thompson Bell of Scotland who is being very helpful in supplying information on Robert Andrew jr's family

Douglas Arthur Macfie born in Hawaii on 6th September, 1884 was the second child of RAM, Junior. He accompanied his father from Hawaii in 1890.
He went to boarding school in Scotland but resided at Dreghorn Castle during school holidays until 1897.
He was educated at Dollar Academy and Blair Lodge. He left school in 1902.
He served for three and a half years in an Edinburgh Chartered Accountant's office.
In June 1905 he went on the stage and toured in England and Ireland.
His aunt Lady McClure died in 1906 and DAM was one of her legatees. On the strength of this legacy he left the stage.
In early summer 1906 he was living at a boarding house in London. Miss Clara Mina Schreyer of Swiss nationality was also in the boarding house.
In the end of September 1906 he went with Miss Schreyer to Glasgow to see his father. He then married Miss Schreyer in the Glasgow Register Office on 15th October, 1906. He was then 22 years of age.
The marriage was a failure and by 1908 there was a "scandalous" divorce which resulted in much press coverage to the Macfie family's shame.

The following is a cutting from the Scotsman of 26th October, 1908:

MIDLOTHIAN GENTLEMAN'S DIVORCE SUIT
MACFIE v. MACFIE
Evidence was led in an action of divorce at the instance of Douglas Arthur Macfie, 24 St. Stephen's Road, Bayswater, London against his wife, Clara Schreyer or Macfie, 12 Penywern Road, Earls Court, London. SW.

The pursuer (24) examined by Mr. Steedman said he was born at Hawaii on 6th September, 1884. His father was a domiciled Scotsman. His grandfather came from England and resided at Dreghorn in Mid-Lothian, up to the time of his death in 1892. Witness's father lived at Dreghorn until 1880 when he went to Hawaii. In 1890 or 1891 his father returned to Scotland and resided for a year at Dreghorn. Witness also resided there during his school holidays from 1890 to 1897. His father went to the West Indies in 1892 and was engaged in the sugar planting industry. Witness received his education at Dollar Academy and Blair Lodge, and after leaving school in 1902 he served three and a half years in a chartered account's office in Edinburgh. He left that firm in June 1905, and took an engagement on the stage, and toured in England and Ireland. In January of 1906 his aunt on his father's side, Lady McClure, died and in consequence of the money which he then got he left the stage.
In May, June and July of 1905 he was residing at a boarding house in London, where he met his wife, who was of Swiss nationality. In the end of September 1906 he went with Miss Schreyer to Glasgow to see his father, and he was married to her at the registry office in Glasgow on 15th October 1906. There were no children of the marriage. After their marriage they lived at Brighton, at various places on the Continent, and in June 1907 returned to London and took a flat there. In April 1908 he came to Edinburgh, and remained there until about 26th April, 1908. His wife accompanied him. He went to Glasgow on 26th April to see a friend off on a voyage, and on his return found that his wife had gone to London without leaving any letter for him, but informing his landlady in Edinburgh that he was to join her in London.
On reaching London, he found his wife was not staying at the boarding house in Montagu Street from which she had written to him whilst he remained in Edinburgh, but left word that she would be back in a day or so. After the first month of their marriage his wife and he failed to agree. He found his wife very extravagant in matters of dress and general style of living. His wife had a little money of her own. As his money became more scarce, he found his wife more difficult to please, and about August 1907, when his finances were rather low, he and his wife decided to separate for a while. He made her an allowance of 35s. per week. When witness returned from Edinburgh to London on 6th May and found that his wife had left the boarding house in Montagu Street, he stayed with his mother. On 7th May he telephoned to the boarding house and finding that his wife had returned he had an interview with her. In the course of the interview she told him that she stayed at St. Leonard's with a friend. After questioning her with regard to her alleged visit to this place, his wife ultimately confessed to him that she had never been at St. Leonard's and that she had been staying with a lady friend at the Tollard Royal Hotel. In the course of their conversation he noticed that the ring his wife was wearing was broader than the ring she used to wear. He was naturally surprised at this, and asked her for an explanation. She said that she had to wear a broad ring so that people would see that she was really married.
In consequence of what his wife had told him he made inquiries al the Tollard Royal Hotel and was informed that nobody of the name of Mrs. Macfie or her friend had been staying at that hotel. On returning to the boarding house he saw his wife, and told her what had taken place at the Tollard Royal Hotel. His wife again informed him that she had been staying there, and on asking her to accompany him to the hotel to clear the matter up, she refused, and complained that witness was suspecting her in regard to her conduct. A little later he had a further conversation with his wife on the subject and she ultimately confessed that she had been staying at the Tollard Royal Hotel under the name of Mrs. Jackson. His brother ascertained that "Mr. and Mrs. Jackson" had been staying at the Tollard Royal Hotel.
A clerkess and a chambermaid at the Tollard Royal Hotel, Southampton Row, London. stated that they remembered a Mr. and Mrs. Jackson staying at the Tollard Royal Hotel on the night of Tuesday 5th May 1908 and occupying the same bedroom. In June Mrs. Macfie returned to the hotel in company with the pursuer's solicitor, and the witnesses identified her as the lady who stayed at the hotel under the name of Mrs. Jackson.

The pursuer's London solicitor gave further evidence of identification, and decree of divorce was granted

According to Heather Douglas Lyle, the 1920 census records Robert Andrew Macfie 64 years of age with a wife ( Esposa) Carmelita Robert 24 years old ( born 1896) living in Sabana Llana.
There are several children listed that are not Robert's offspring - the marital status indicates Consensual Contract
The census was taken at Sabana Llana, Parte Norte PR .

At first this was quite a mystery as to how we have the two listngs on the census records, we thought perhaps this first
relationship ended with the out break of the Spanish Flu, Robert being the only one to survive , or that the census records were wrong in leaving us believe that Carmelita Robert was his wife, or that she was the wife of a Mr Reventor,
and her maiden name may have been Plat and Robert was simple boarding with them at the time of the census , Mr Reventor being out of the area at that particular time.

The second 1920 listing was made at San Lorenzo - Pueblo PR and the marital status is noted as Consensual Contract

It has been assumed following as much research as has been done to April 2021, Robert Andrew jr after having arrived in New York with his two sons,
decided to establish himself on the Island of Tabgo where he either purchased or leased an estate some 250 acres large named Bacotlet which was located in the parish of St. George.
I have been left with the impression since Cameltia Roberts has indicated on several documents that she was born in Trinidad, Robert Andrew and she may have begun thier relationship at this location.
Since I have been unable to locate a 1910 census in Peurto Rico , nor have I been able to locate any birth registration , it is certainly a possibliity the daughter Cameltia refers to on the 1920 census
taken in Puerto Rico, may also be Robert Andrew's offspring. Further investigation is necessary to shine more light on this situation

In 1814, when the island of Tabago was again under British control, another phase of successful sugar production began.
However, a severe hurricane in 1847, combined with the collapse of plantation underwriters, marked the end of the sugar trade.
Without the highly profitable sugar production, Britain had no further use for Tobago and in 1889 the island was made a ward of Trinidad.
Without sugar, the islanders had to grow other crops, planting acres of limes, coconuts and cocoa and exporting their produce to Trinidad.
