WITH NOTES ON THE WYLIE AND CONNOR NAMES
RUINS OF BURT CASTLE, BUILT IN THE 1500's
WHY McNAUGHER IS REALLY McCONNOR
This is explained
in a more scholarly
way in a link on our index page. The explanation is that when English
clerks heard the Gaelic version of McCONNOR spoken, they spelt
it McNAUGHER or one of many different variations such as
McNocker, McNogher - my list goes up to about 50 variants. Martin (a
cousin from Derry) has been of great help with the two names. It was
apparently the practice during the famine times for people to be
offered land if they changed their religion. It would appear that
Martin's family stayed Roman Catholic while mine became Presbyterian.
From then on the Presbyterian branch seemed to use McNaugher and the
Catholic families Connor. Martin's great great grandmother was Eleanor
Connor (who variously used McNaugher, Connor and McNocker). She
was the daughter of Henry McNocker/Connor and Margaret Crumlish. (Henry
is the Henry CONNOR on the 1857 Griffiths Valuation
below).
Allowing for the
various spellings of the name I have compiled what could be my family.
Until we get to the 1800's no connections have been proven, but
extensive research has been done and there is a very good chance that I
am on the right track. If anyone can clarfiy any details at all I would
be most appreciative.
I have colour coded
the generations to make it a little easier to follow. However for a
direct descent lineage to to this page.

In 1740 on a
Protestant Householders' List for Derry is:
Hu McNAGH of
Ballyrashane, Coleraine. Also on this list is Hu McCONNOR of
Loughinshillin. I have Hu McNAGH as the father of Hugh McCONNOR.
Children of Hu McCONNOR
and Unknown UNKNOWN:
Margaret
McCONNOR
born circa 1748 married James
HUNTER in 1768. This information was
obtained from the Derry Registry
of Births and Marriages.
Hu McCONNOR
also
known as CONNOR
b.c. 1750 married Nancy ARBUTHNOT
born circa 1755
married about 1775. This couple belonged to the
Presbyterian
Congregation of Maghera,Townland of Dunglady at
the time of the
marriage of their son James CONNOR
also known as MacNOGHER
(Bann Valley
Church Records).
Henry McCONNA
born circa 1754 (on the Flax Entitlement List of
Maghera

Michael (Mickey) MYNOGHER born circa 1776 of Ballyagan, Desertoghill. Derry (Sources: Bann Valley Church Records, 1796 Flax Entitlement List, 1822 and 1831 Tithes. 1818 and 1825 Presbyterian Chuch Visitation Lists). Sources. Michael married Rebecca CASKEY born circa 1793. Rebecca had been married previously to a James LOGAN (1809 Derry Registry). She had two sons John LOGAN born 1811 and Daniel LOGAN born 1813 (living with Michael and Rebecca and their children in 1818 and 1825 (Visitation Lists). Michael and Rebecca were married circa 1815.
Children of Michael MYNOGHER and Rebecca

born
before 1818 (Visitation Lists 1818 and 1825).
Mary MYNOGHER born before 1818 (Visitation Lists 1818, 1825 and 1840). Married James WILSON 18 April 1845. (Bann Valley Church Records) or Mariah CONNOR married James DRIPPS 1852 (Derry Registry). Mary/Mariah would have been at least aged 34 in 1852 so the James WILSON marriage is more likely. However her sister Peggy Ellen CONNOR born 1829 married Joseph DRIPPS and James and Joseph appear to be brothers.
Andrew MYNOGHER
born 13.01.1824 of Ballyagan, Desertoghill, Derry (Bann Valley Church
Records). Visitation Lists 1825 and 1840.
Joseph MYNOGHER
born 12 October 1826 of Ballyagan, Desertoghill, Derry (Bann Valley
Church
Records). Visitation Lists 1825 and 1840. A Joseph CONNOR married
Rebecca KINCAID 1847 and a Joseph CONNOR married Matilda STEELE 1847
(Derry Registry). The Matilda STEELE marriage is interesting in that
Michael's brother James had a son James whose son was Samuel McNAUGHER.
Samuel married Jane STEELE
(born circa 1832 in Ireland) in the
1850's.
Peggy Ann CONNOR
born 16.07.1829 Ballyagan, Desertoghill, Derry married Joseph DRIPPS in
1859 (Derry Registry).
Rebecca MYNOGHER
born 15.091831 Ballyagan, Desertoghill, Derry.

Widower 2 November 1854 at St Columb's Church of
Ireland, Derry (IGI, Derry

known children - Fanny
STARRETT born

also known as McNAUGHER,

He was a Farmer at Drumhaggart,
Parish of Burt in Donegal. He was born circa 1840 and
married Margaret ANDERSON born
circa 1834 married 25 November 1859. Joseph
married as Joseph
CONNOR. Margaret died 21 October 1886 (Death
Certificate extract of Margaret

of Drumacross
near Drumhaggart, Farmer's wife died 21 October 1886 aged
52. Elizabeth
KEES, her niece, present at her death.) This Elizabeth KEES married William John BARNETT. Elizabeth's
mother was Catherine ANDERSON who
married William KEES, two more
of Margaret's sisters married KEES,
Sarah ANDERSON married Thomas KEES and Jane ANDERSON married Robert KEES. It appears that the KEE
boys were brothers. Another sister Isabell
ANDERSON born
circa 1840 married Isaac WILEY.
So at last I have a
WYLIE connection of which there
are many more I am sure.
Joseph
McNAUGHER was
living with his son-in-law William
DINSMORE, also a Widower in 1901 in Drumhaggart.
Joseph
McNAUGHER died 29 November 1905. His estate was valued at 208
pounds It was administered by his son Thomas McNAUGHER
described as a Factory Manager. Joseph was described as a Retired
Farmer of Drumacross, Co. Donegal. Joseph McNAUGHER and
Margaret ANDERSON were my

CHILDREN
OF JOSEPH McNAUGHER and MARGARET ANDERSON
(from IGI and
other sources). Surnames
spelt as they appear on Registry.
Joseph NcNAUGHER born 19 August
1860 baptised 7 October 1860 Knowhead Presbyterian, Muff Parish, died
1883 aged 22 years.
Catherine
(Cassie) McNAUGHER
(my great grandmother) born 16 April
1862 baptised 1 June 1862 Knowhead Presbyterian, Muff Parish married
John
BEATTIE 2 November 1886.
Both John and Cassie had
died before 1901 in sad circumstances. Cassie died either in childbirth
or shortly
after. John
committed
suicide. He was found hanging by his 10 year old
son Andrew
BEATTIE who cut him down. This would have been in 1900 or
1901.
A John BEATTY and Mary KENNY of Drumhaggart had two
children baptised at Knowhead Presbyterian Church, Parish of Muff - Mary BEATTY born 13 April 1842 and Andrew BEATTY born 1 April 1849.
A John BEATTY is recorded as
having been born 1856 (Derry Registry). On the Marriage Entry for John BEATTIE
and Catherine
McNAUGHER John's
father is
recorded as John BEATTY of
Drumhaggart, Farmer. Witnesses were Thomas McNAUGHER
(brother of Cassie)
and Margaret
Jane McNAUGHER (sister or cousin of Cassie's). John is
described as a Bachelor of Full Age. Joseph McNAUGHER
(Cassie's father
was described as a Farmer of Drumacross near Drumhaggart. They were
married in the Presbyterian Church at Knowhead, Muff Parish by Rev.
John
Camac.
In a
list of landowners in Donegal in the 1870's are Messrs
BEATTY and BROWN of
Drumhaggart owning 52 acres.
William BEATTY and John BEATTY each rented a house and
outbuildings from the Marquis of Donegal
and shared 52 acres of land.In
1857 John BEATTY owned
56 acres at Kineeley, Co. Donegal. Family lore has
it that John BEATTY bred horses for the English gentry.
John and Cassie had
either 11 or 13 children.
Here are
the ones we know
about, Mary
Elizabeth (my grandmother) being the only girl. The
children I have knowledge of so far:
William
John
BEATTY born circa 1888. In
the 1901 Census William, James
and possibly Thomas
(see below) were living with James
McNAUGHER (William's great
uncle) in Drumhaggart. William is described as a Farm Servant aged 12.
William BEATTY
of Craig Townland, Muff Parish signed the Ulster
Declaration in 1912.
However a
William
BEATTIE residing
at 15
Fountain Place, Londonderry with a Lena
BEATTIE and Mary Elizabeth BEATTIE also signed the
Declaration. Could this be a case of a younger child of the
family living with an elder married brother? This second scenario
seems a little far-fetched as Mary Elizabeth would have only been 6 or
7 years - probably too young to sign the Declaration.
I have
received
the1901 census details from two sources (see below). One has Thomas
BEATTY,
Orphan
and
the other James
BEATTY,
Orphan both aged 7 years. John and Cassie
were reputed to have
had two
sets of twins. I suspect Thomas was
also
living with his Great Uncle James at this time. and have entered him
with the Census Details. Thomas
Alexander BEATTY was born to John
BEATTY and Cassie McNAUGHER 31 January 1894 and
baptised 17 March 1894 at Knowhead Presbyterian Church.

These are the only HUNTER connections I can find in the Burt area. In 1857 there was a John HUNTER at Toulett in Burt, a Richard HUNTER at Drumhaggart, Burt and Samuel HUNTER also of Drumhaggart. A Robert BEATTY married Fanny Ann HUNTER in 1863. This is a Civil Registration so we don't know where this marriage took place. Edward HUNTER born 1864, Parish of Burt, son of John HUNTER and Matilda McDONNELL. Mary HUNTER born 1865, Parish of Burt, daughter of Robert HUNTER and Mary Ann CAMPBELL.

born
25 November 1865. Thomas married Martha ORR daughter
of Alexander ORR and Sarah
MULHERIN of Sappagh, Parish of Muff 30 June
1892 at the Presbyterian Church
at Ballyarnett. He is described as
being of
Drumhaggart and Martha of Sappagh. Witnesses
were their fathers -
Alexander
ORR and Joseph
McNAUGHER.
Martha was
born in 1864 Sappagh, Muff and died 1942 Winnipeg, Canada. Thomas
McNAUGHER aka McNOCKER is the
same person known
as Thomas
McNAUGHTON who
was
living in Derry in the 1920's. He was a
witness at John
BEATTY and Catherine
McNAUGHER's
marriage. Thomas
(now known as McNAUGHTON)
and his
family were at 13 Barry Street, Derry City at the time of the Ulster
Covenant Declaration 1912. On the day of the
Covenant signing, the
Barry Street household consisted of Thomas
MCNAUGHTON
Snr, Martha,
their son
Thomas Jnr
and younger siblings
of Martha -
Joseph ORR, Ruth
ORR and Maggie Porter ORR together with
another Maggie
ORR (this could be Maggie
ORR (nee
BEATTIE) wife of Martha's brother George Henry ORR).Thomas Snr and
Martha
resided in Princess Street, Derry City. Members of the family say
they cannot recall
Thomas
and Martha residing at Barry Street, so maybe they had
gathered there
on the day of the signing of the Covenant. Thomas McNAUGHER aka McNAUGHTON Snr was
killed in a motor accident in Derry
in the late
1920's - sometime before 1928. From
information received from Bob
ORR (who has researched the Orr family) Martha and her
daughters (see below) emigrated to Canada on the "Athenia" arriving in

born in 1897 and the IGI gives the marriage

right, but I suspect the researcher who submitted the information to
the IGI has taken a guess and the
marriage date may not be
correct. Also ages on Census forms are notoriously
inaccurate.

The families below fit into my family somewhere - either as cousins or siblings. Nothing more to go on at the moment.
HENRY McNOCKER/CONNOR
of Inch Island born circa 1820 Co. Donegal. Henry married Margaret
CRUMLISH. On
the 1857 Griffiths Valuations he is described as being of
Monreagh, died Monreagh
1870. Margaret came from Gortnaskea, Upper Fahan. This couple are
the great,
great, great grandparents of Martin who gave me this
information. This family and their descendants are Roman
Catholics. It appears that about the mid 1860's the families who
remained Catholic settled on the CONNOR
version of their surname whilst
the ones who had adopted Presbyterianism became McNAUGHER.
HENRY McNOCKER aka CONNOR and MARGARET CRUMLISH's children:
Eleanor (Ellen) McNAUGHER aka CONNOR aka McNOCKER born 1846 married William DEEHAN and lived at Rosemount, Derry City. Thomas (Tom)
DEEHAN lived
in Artizan
Street, Derry City.

I hope the above
data may give someone
some help with their research in Donegal. Thanks to Martin for his
contribution. It has progressed this family at an amazing rate.
I hope there is someone out there who can progress it even further
for David, Martin, Steve and of course, my sake. (Link to
David
and Steve's families). A very special thanks to Mags in Leeds,
Yorkshire for bringing myself and Julie in California together
and for the wonderful friendship that has developed between the three
of us. Also all Mags' detective work in unearthing all these new twigs
in our trees.
I would like to put some information on the history and geography of Burt Parish at some time. Co. Donegal seems to be one of the overlooked Counties but it has a wealth of history.
Except for my family, I have no knowledge of the other names mentioned above. If anyone can flesh them out, I would be pleased to add the information here.
The spelling of the various names is how they were spelt on the documents involved. McNaugher has about 50 variations (that's the count so far).
Thanks to Lindel for her help and advice. Lindel's wonderful Donegal Genealogy site is on our home page as a link.
Also David. It would be great if we could tie up these connections.
If you think you
have any connection or
can offer any advice, could you please contact me.
