Rene Ancellin was born about 1614 in Hermenault, a small village located seven miles northwest of Fontenay-le-Comte. After Claire's death Rene re-married in 1665 in the church of Ste-Marguerite LaRochelle, Marie Juin, daughter of Francis and Mathurine Juin Thessareyne.

Rene's parents are unknown (his father was possibly Louis Asselin), however, he had a brother who had at least two sons of Hermenault, Poitou and Pierre from Notre Dame de Cogne, La Rochelle. Rene also had an uncle Gilles Encelin who married Catherine Clement whose daughter Francoise came to New France and married Guillaume Valade in 1669. The contract was made by Notary Paul Vachon in Rene's home on 9 Oct. The contract states that Gilles was dead and Catherine was still living and were from the parish of St. Martin of the Isle of Rhe.

Claire Rousselot and her son Francois died in August 1661 during an epidemic that was so devastating at the time in France.

Rene was a spinner by trade in France and in 1665, he embarked with his pregnant second wife and his daughter Mary to New France (his other children staying in France). He settled on land of Jean Gallerand Boucher at l'Ange Gardien which Jean had acquired in 1663. By the 1667 census, Rene, farmer, age 53, Marie Juin, age 31, Marie, age 15, Charles, 8 mos., owned two cattle and cultivated six acres of land. His two immediate neighbors were Abraham Fiset and Jacques Achon.

On 18 March 1669 before Notary Aubert, David Estourneau promised to pay damages to Rene Ancelin because of injuries inflicted by Estourneau's wife, Francoise Chaplain.

On 10 March 1670, before Notary Paul Vachon, Rene Ancelin receives a grant from Bishop Laval of three acres in front of the parish of St John between Jehan-Jacques Laviolette and Adrien Blanquet. The original has been lost, however, a contract done before Notary Genaple on 5 Mar. 1708 is given by Rene's heirs. The land was granted to him at a charge of 20 sols payable annually and could not be resold. The lot numbers were 1019, 1023, and 993 in St. Jean, Isle d'Orleans.

On 31 May 1671 a complaint is brought before Thandre-Louis Chartier de Lotbinire against Mathurin Thibodeau dit Lalime. It follows a trial in which we learn that Mathurin had enterered into an agreement with Rene Ancelin, Pierre's father-in-law, in which he would tend Mathurin's farm while he was away on a trip (a Voyageur perhaps?). Mathurin all went well until Rene prevailed on Pierre to provide room and board for Marie Roberts, Mathurin's wife, which he did. Marie brought along to Pierre's cabin her husband's dog and gun both of which she forgot and left there when she returned home only to learn later that it was Pierre's intention to keep them in payment for her room and board. Pierre lodged the complaint stating that when Mathurin came to retrieve his property on May 10th or 11th, Pierre's wife Marie was alone in the cabin and was not about to give up the dog or the gun. A scuffle ensued in which Marie was injured by Mathurin and she took to her bed for days and was attended to by a surgeon. A satisfactory solution was reached and Mathurin got his gun and dog back and had to pay litigation costs (12 bushels of wheat). It's interesting to note that years later Pierre's son married Mathurin's daughter!

The 1681 Census mentions Rene Ancelin, 80 years, Marie Juin 40 years, Charles 16 years, Marie 12 yrs. & Philippe, 6 yrs.

Rene was buried in Riviere Ouelle where he undoubtedly moved to be near one of his children who lived there.

Rene's son Philippe, his sister and her husband Pierre Fournier live on the family homestead after their mother's death in 1702 and stay there until the land is sold in 1708.
