"�Richard fitz Turolf�" witnessed a charter dated to 1103/04 under which King Henry I confirmed property to Saint-Martin de Marmoutier, Tours.(1) Richard Fitz Turold was an Anglo-Norman landowner who was mentioned in the Domesday Survey. He had a castle at Cardinham where he was a major tenant and steward of Robert of Mortain. He also held the manor of Pnehallam and was probably the builder of Restormel Castle. Cardinham castle remained in the family until the 14th century and later became a ruin. The manor of Cardinham was one of the few places where the custom of "Free Bench" is recorded. By this custom a widow could retain tenure of the land until she remarried.

William witnessed a charter dated 15 Apr. 1123 under which King Henry I restored churches in Cornwall and Devon to Exeter Cathedral.(1) The 1130 Pipe Roll records "Wills fil Ric" returning in Devonshire for "uxore Fulbti de Doura cum dote et maritagio suo" (dated 1288). The relationship between William FitzRichard and the family of Fulbert of Dover has not been traced.(2) "�[W]illelmus filius Ri[cardi]" witnessed the charter dated (Apr/21 Nov) 1136 under which King Stephen confirmed churches to Exeter Cathedral.(3) The Gesta Stephani Regis (pp. 64-5) states that Willelmus filius Ricardi... (in) comitatus Cornubiensis rebelled against King Stephen and married filiam suam to Reinaldo filio regis Henrici, dated c.1140.

Robert FitzWilliam held Bodardle as guardian of Walter Hai the younger in 1166, he was also lord of the lands held by Richard Fitz Turolf at the time of Domesday. A charter of King Henry III, dated 6 May 1235, records donations to Tywardreth Priory, Cornwall by �Robertus filius Willielmi et Agnes uxor�et Robertus meus filius� dated 1169 which names Robert as "fratre Baldewyno existente priore apud Tiwardrait".(1) When Walter died s.p. in 1186 Bodardle passed to Robert's son Robert in right of his wife Agnes who was Walter's sister. Robert also held the manor of Cotleigh, Devon.

By 1193 both Cardinham and Bodardle had passed to Robert de Cardinham. Robert was one of the King's Justices. Robert had died by 1227 when the estates passed to his son Andrew. Upon Andrew's death the estate passed to his only daughter and heiress, Isolda, wife of Thoms de Tracy.
